Course Description

Introduction:

The purpose of this course is to provide the students the basic principles of oral biology and histology 2 with emphasis on structure and function at the molecular and cellular levels.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course the student should be able to:

1. Understand fairly well the principles of the formation and development of normal orofacial tissues.

2. Be able to describe satisfactorily the interrelationships between macroscopic, microscopic structures and functions of these oral tissues.

The course will comprise practical exercises and seminars. There will be in-course and end-of-course assessments, mostly in the form of objective structured practical examinations (OSPE). The weekly practical exercises will also be assessed. Course Objectives:

At the end of the second semester, students should be able to:1. Diagnose lesions of hard tooth tissues and in particular dental caries, excavate carious lesions

and cleave unsupported enamel of mounted extracted teeth, using suitable hand instruments.2. Classify carious lesions and recognize approximal caries on a bitewing radiograph.3. Identify the various hand and rotary instruments used in Operative Dentistry.4. Know methods of isolation of the operative field and apply the RD.5. Course Description

Introduction:

A dental material has always been a fascinating and challenging area for the dental practitioner. During the past several years dental materials science has undergone a virtual explosion of new knowledge. The advent of new polymeric and ceramic restorative systems, bonding and adhesive materials, implant materials, glass ionomer cements, precious and non-precious metal restorative systems and impression materials have virtually revolutionized the practice of modern dentistry. Therefore, dentist uses the largest number of materials from different classes. Materials are used in dentistry to prevent disease, restore parts of the teeth and associated structure, as well as replace and reconstruct whole teeth and associated hard/soft structures of the jaws and face in a functionally acceptable and esthetically pleasing manner.

This course is meant to teach the student of dentistry aspects of materials science necessary to enable him to understand and continue to learn dental biomaterials. Also, to develop an appropriate understanding of the criteria for the selection of materials for specific dental procedures.

Course Objectives:

The student will be exposed to those aspects of materials science applicable to clinical dental practice and will understand the basic scientific principles pertaining to proper manipulation of Dental Biomaterials.

The student will have a working knowledge of the nature, structure and properties of metals, polymers and ceramics as they apply to dental practice.

The student will be able, upon completion of this course, to justify selection of the most appropriate materials possession the physical properties that are suitable for a particular functional situation.

The student will appreciate the underlying principles for the strengthening of materials and the need for specific laboratory and clinical manipulation.

The student will be capable of rationally consider new dental materials as they are developed during his professional career.

This course will address the behavioral aspects in dentistry, and particular emphasis will be placed on understanding human behavior, patient management and the ethical responsibility inherent within the scope of the dental profession.

Behavioral dentistry has been defined as the interdisciplinary field concerned with the development and integration of behavioural and bio-dental science knowledge and techniques relevant to oral health and disease, and the application of this knowledge and these techniques to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the student should: Have sufficient knowledge on professionalism and professional ethics. Understand how behavioral concepts can be applied to the diagnosis and treatment of dental

patient. Know the role of behavior in the dynamics of the doctor to patient relationship. Understand basic interpersonal communication skills and be able to handle special problems in

communication. Use the techniques of behavior modification to promote patient compliance with oral

therapeutic measures. Know the behavioral view of the provider. Understand the fundamentals of problem solving and conflict resolution. Learn techniques of managing the fearful and apprehensive patient.

The objective of this course is to examine the key parameters in the science of behavior and to show how and why this science is critical to the successful practice of dentistry.
