As 2009 draws to a close, we look back
on our accomplishments and ahead to our
tasks. This past quarter has been busy
including helping our members preparefor H1N1, launching our Member-to-
Member Benefits Program, partnering
with Propel ICT to re-launch the freespots
initiative, and surveying our members on
the proposed sale of NB Power.
We were also very busy advocating for
improvements to maternity and parental
benefits under EI and maintaining our
Canadian Blood Services Production
centre, participating in the Nuclear Waste
Management Organizations multi-party
dialogue sessions, co-hosting a PhysicianRecruitment Reception, and supporting
the new Destination Marketing
Organization, to name a few. Weve had
a busy fall!
Most recently we celebrated business
in Saint John during our 25th Annual
Outstanding Business Achievement
Awards Gala on November 25th. To view

and volunteers who continue to make this
the premier business event in Saint Johneach year!
The Winter and Spring promise to be
no less busy! Of course we will continue
to assess the impact of the proposed sale
of NB Power with and on our members.
In addition, we will also be holding our
annual strategic planning session. One of
the key components to the Strategic
Planning Session is the result of our Annual
Membership and Priorities Survey. This
survey will be circulated to the designated
representatives of our member companiesearly in January. This is your, our
members, opportunity to let us know what
issues you would like us to focus on in the
upcoming year. Make the Power of the
Network work for you and your business!
The theme of this issue of Currents is
Outlook 2010 and what better articles
to include than those from members who
are in various industries to give us an idea
of what we can expect as we celebrate our
citys 225th birthday in 2010! And because
the Holiday Season is upon us, weve alsoincluded a small piece on tips to make the
most of holiday festivities in the workplace,
especially in light of H1N1.
On behalf of the Board of Directors and
staff of the Saint John Board of Trade, I
would like to take this opportunity to thank
you for your support throughout 2009.
Happy Holidays!

Outlook 2010
Next year, Saint John, this countrys
oldest incorporated city, will celebrate its
225th birthday as a Cultural Capital of
Canada. The application, prepared in 2007
by the Saint John Community Arts Board,
on behalf of the City, was one of several
dozen received by the Canadian
Department of Heritage in Ottawa. Saint
John is one of just three Canadian
communities to receive this honour for
the coming year. This past September the
Federal Heritage Minister, James Moore,
was in Saint John to make the
announcement, and to congratulate our
community for its excellent application,
and for its ongoing commitment to arts
and culture.
The community of Greater Saint John
has been enjoying a cultural renaissance
during the past decade, something that
has laid the groundwork for this national
recognition. The Saint John Community
Arts Board, created in 2002, has worked
in tandem with the Citys Cultural Office
to advocate for our vibrant arts community.
The reopening of the Saint John Arts
Centre, the continuing success of the
Imperial Theatre, the recent expansion of
the Saint John Theatre Company, the ever-
growing number of world class public
artworks and, of course, the pride in our

stunning inventory of heritage buildings
have contributed to this renewed vigour,
making ours a community of choice for
immigration and tourism.
Next year will be a year of celebration
for Greater Saint John. We will celebrate
our history, we will acknowledge all of
our founding peoples, and we will embrace
our multicultural community. We will
celebrate with art, music, dance, theatre,
stories and film. It will be a year to come
home to Saint John and to re-discover the
Original City.

Outlook 2010
Medical programs help to drive healthcare and the economy, which helps to
explain the overwhelming support for
Dalhousie Universitys new medical
program in New Brunswick.
This is going
to be one of the
greatest things to
happen in health
care in New
Brunswick in the
last 40 years,
said John Steeves,MD, the associate
dean of Dalhousie
Medicine New
Brunswick (DMNB) who is leading the
implementation and delivery of
Dalhousies undergraduate medical
education in New Brunswick.
The first class of 30 students will begin
their program next September. They will
spend the first two years studying in Saint
John, and some will fan out across the
province for their final two years tocomplete their clerkships in Fredericton,
Moncton, Miramichi and Saint John.
"Seventy to eighty per cent of new
graduates want to be in a site where
medical education is delivered, said Dr.
Steeves. If people train in a particular
area, theyre more likely to stay in that
region when they graduate.
For this reason the program is expected
to yield more doctors for New Brunswick.
In addition to training much-needed
New Brunswick doctors, the Dalhousie
program will be an important new sector
of provincial economy.
At the official sod turning in early
November, Premier Shawn Graham
announced more than $1.6 million for the
construction of health-care training
facilities for DMNB.
The announcement included $1,158,000
to build anatomy and histology teaching
laboratories at the Saint John RegionalHospital and a $449,000 contract to
construct the clinical teaching space at
the Saint John Regional Hospital. The
construction is now well underway and is
scheduled for
completion in the
spring of 2010.

Dr. Tony Reiman, the assistant dean o

Outlook 2010
In October the Saint John Board ofTrade in partnership with Propel ICT
announced the re-launch offreespots, the
public Wi-Fi service that covers the City
of Saint John with free wireless internet.
freespots is the wi-fi strategy for the
Saint John region that encourages the
growth of wi-fi hotspots throughout the
city to cover the majority of public access
areas said Imelda Gilman, President of
the Saint John Board of Trade. By
encouraging businesses and property
owners to invest in this relatively low costservice, the city will benefit by creating
an attractive business environment that
enables citizens and visitors to work and
play online from anywhere they choose.
It is our expectation that unlimited
widespread access to wi-fi is in our near
future and we wish to speed its growth
by promoting and encouraging those who
invest in this strategy.
Residents and visitors can get online
wirelessly, with no barriers, and for free
at any location displaying the freespotslogo and decal. The following businesses
and locations are just a few examples that
are freespots: Java Moose Coffee House,
Business Resource Centre, City Hall
Council Chambers, Tri-Star Mercedes-
Benz, and Vitos Restaurant Rothesay
Avenue.
freespots encourages local businesses
to install and maintain wi-fi access points
according to an established standard and
promotes participating businesses and city
property owners that have installed wi-fihotspots according to the standard.
www.freespots.ca has been developed to
feature participating locations and various
venues and events will promote the
strategy and its participants over the long
term. Locations can be registered as
freespots at any time.
"While freespots has been a very
successful program to date, we wanted to
take this opportunity to re-launch and re-
energize the program as demand for wi-

improve the ecosystem for technology
businesses in New Brunswick and UNB

connecting 124 mile pipeline in the State
of Maine.Work to complete the third LNG storage
tank continues to be on track at the
Canaport LNG terminal that will
ultimately result in increasing the
maximum send-out capacity of 1.0 Billion
cubic feet (Bcf) per day. And most recently
a new report released by the Geological
Survey of Canada suggests that the size
of natural gas reserves embedded in shale
rock located within the region are more
significant than previously thought. Our
regions energy sector continues toenergize our regions economy.
Much has happened in our regional
energy hub this fall. New Brunswick is the
focus of national and international attentionwithin the electricity sector as a result of
the memorandum of understanding (MOU)
signed by the Premiers of Quebec and New
Brunswick on October 29th. Under the
terms of the MOU, Hydro Quebec will
acquire substantially all the performing
assets of NB Power and will undertake the
responsibility to supply energy to New
Brunswick going forward. The deal, valued
by the parties at nearly $10 Billion, will
result in significantly lower power rates
for industrial users in New Brunswick, andrate stabilization for five (5) years for
residential, commercial
and wholesale customers. Details of the
agreement are to be finalized by March31, 2010, and will need to be ratified by
both provincial governments.
Our regions cluster of energy assets
continues to foster further investment in
our region. Irving Oil Limited successfully
completed a major turnaround at its Saint
John refinery. Valued at $220 Million, this
investment was aimed at improving the
refinerys ability to produce higher grade
fuels such as ultra-low sulphur gasoline.
The companys affiliate, Irving Oil

As the Holiday Season tends to go hand
in hand with the flu season, here are some
tips that will help you enjoy the festivities
this Holiday Season!
1) If you feel ill, stay home. Yourcolleagues will appreciate it and you
dont want to pass your illness along
to others at such a busy time of year.
2) Network!! These events are not
opportunities to talk shop, but are
opportunities to make connections with
colleagues and potential clients.
3) Spread the Holiday Cheer, not Germs!
Greetings are a big part of the Holidays.
Shaking hands is fine, but you can
politely decline by acknowledging the
flu season.4) Wash your hands. Whether shaking
hands or eating appetizers, you use
your hands a lot at holiday events.
Make sure theyre clean and germ-free.
5) Mind your manners. To prevent
accidentally sharing food, cutlery or
dishes remember basic etiquette such
as:a. Know which bread plate and water
glass are yours (solids on the left,
liquids on the right);
b. Keep your glass with you. If you
set it down and are unsure which
glass is yours, err on the side of
caution and get a new drink.
6) Consume alcohol conservatively.
Alcohol can impair your immune
system as well as your judgement.
Some basic rules of thumb can not only
ensure that you make a good impression, but can help protect you from catching
the flu, ensuring not only a happy, but
healthy Holiday!
