Sharefest Work Day Helps Make Over El Rincon Elementary School On Saturday April 30, hundreds of people associated with the non-profit Sharefest descended upon El Rincon Elementary School to repaint buildings, restripe the playground athletic facilities, clear up overgrown landscape areas, mulch planters, reseed lawn areas, revitalize the entry planter, paint various projects on the playground and on the campus and perform general cleanup as requested by the school staff. The work was accomplished via the labor provided by supportive subcontractors, Balfour Beatty employees, CCUSD consultants, students from Culver City High School, District staff and concerned parents. “This is an incredible example of Success for All, Takes Us All,” said Superintendent Dave LaRose. “Partners like Balfour-Beatty are truly are part of the Culver City family. We are grateful for their leadership in making this ‘make-over’ event possible!” Balfour Beatty Construction, the District’s construction management firm overseeing the Measure CC bond projects, spearheaded the effort for the Sharefest Work Day, which also occurred at schools in the Redondo Beach, Torrance and Wiseburn School Districts. “The Sharefest Workday provides us with the opportunity to inspire, to connect, and brighten the future of the kids and communities we serve,” said Balfour Beatty Vice President Gil Fullen. “We get to live our purpose out loud by being a Relentless Ally for the success of each and every dream we are entrusted to build, and it’s both amazing and humbling to be part of this.” The El Rincon project is part of an annual event organized by Sharefest. “Every year, we are amazed by the powerful stories that happen when businesses, nonprofits, churches, and individuals come together on Workday with a common goal, to help improve our schools and communities,” said Chad Mayer, Sharefest Executive Director. “The transformations create a renewed sense of pride in the places we gather and learn.” With a vision to create an imprint of lasting positive change in our community, Sharefest began as a simple idea to leverage a community’s assets through the creation of working coalitions, growing local leaders, equipping interested youth and fostering volunteerism utilizing established community organizations. Rather than just coming in from the outside and encourage a community to be a consumer of services, Sharefest collaborates with communities to help themselves, developing ownership. Sharefest focuses on mentoring youth to develop the leaders of tomorrow, fostering volunteerism in the community through service projects in specific points of influence including schools, parks and community programs, and establishing working coalitions made up of city leaders, schools, businesses and the faith community. Since 2003, Sharefest has mobilized 50,000 volunteers to complete nearly 2,500 Workday projects, saving cities and schools throughout the Los Angeles area more than $10 million.
