our mayor welcomes you TO FLORIDA KEYS CULTURE Welcome to the fabulous Florida Keys! The magic of our culture is everywhere, from unique architecture to bright tropical plants, shades of turquoise water all around, and an energy that’s
full of life. It’s the artists past and present who have recognized this is as a place unlike any other and continue documenting its beauty through a variety of mediums. I encourage you to explore, see the art for yourself and enjoy our island chain, because it’s not just a place to visit – it’s an entire experience.

about the cover artist: TAYLOR HALE Taylor Hale is a native conch who draws inspiration from a lifetime on the water in his island hometown of Key Largo. His love of art began at a young age and was nurtured at Coral Shores High School and
Florida Keys Community College before Taylor earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2009.
Taylor is driven by the constant transformations of the sky and sea—exploring what happens as these powerful natural forces interact. Within his work, he captures movement and stillness, familiarity and the unknown, peace and unrest. In each oil painting, he seeks to create a window to connect to another world.
He loves meeting other cloud lovers and has found that an admiration for the ever-changing sky is something that can connect people from all walks of life. He invites his viewers to bring their unique perspectives to each piece and explore where the art takes them!
When he’s not painting, he enjoys spending time in nature, seeing live music, and being with his wife and daughter.
Connect with Taylor on Instagram (@taylorhalepaintings) and at taylorhalepaintings.com. He looks forward to his second annual solo exhibition at the Roberto Russell Galleries at Ocean Sotheby’s Realty offce in Islamorada from October—December 2022. See you there!

ART goes
Monstera Whisper by artist Jim Gallucci at Truman Waterfront Park, Key West.
by Glenn Curry
Visitors and residents are invited to enjoy the wealth of art found outdoors in the Florida Keys & Key West. Although this art is extraordinarily varied, much of it shares certain
characteristics. It is usually large in scale and is often made with innovative and especially durable materials. Concern for the environment is a frequent theme, as are questions of community. This art is typically designed to entertain and to encourage the active involvement of viewers. You may take a stroll (or swim) around and through an installation, pose with a life-size statue of a beloved local character, or view the murals inside the Red Nun. By your presence you become a participant in the making of art here.
The examples below are meant to shine a light on the diversity and quality of outdoor public art in the Florida Keys. The list is far from complete.
We begin our sampling of outdoor art in Key West at the intersection of Whitehead and South streets, the southernmost point in the southernmost city. Here, where land emerges from the sea, we fnd two works that reference the inclusivity for “One Human Family” by Chod Stine in Key West.

which Key West is known. The statue of Bishop Albert Kee is a tribute to one of the most beloved of the characters that make up this diverse community. Kee was the pastor at the Church of Prophecy, but he was better known around town as an unoffcial ambassador for Key West. For almost 50 years, he greeted visitors to the southernmost point with a blast from his conch horn and a hand extended in friendship. In the life size bronze sculpture, Bahama Village artist Tom Joris has depicted Kee in his most typical gesture.
A few feet away from the Bishop Kee memorial, the sidewalk is the setting for an artwork proclaiming -- in the words of the city’s offcial tag line -- that we are One Human Family. The glazed tile composition (diameter 62 inches) is designed to spark thoughts and conversation among the travelers waiting in line to take the obligatory photograph of the red concrete buoy that indicates the location of the southernmost point. The round shape of the work references the globe, while the human fgures are all the same except that they vary in color. By placing the piece in the middle of the sidewalk, artist Chod Stine of Tiles Etcetera invites us to step in or on the art.
He has painted everything from sheets of discarded metal roofng to cars to complete neighborhoods, and he has done it all with a sly sense of humor. Rick Worth’s murals have evoked countless smiles from visitors and residents. Look closely at the fgures in one of his painted walls and you’re likely to recognize someone you know doing something unexpected. Among his most recent projects was The Saturday Afternoon
a large mural celebrating life in Bahama Village. It is peopled by portraits of real individuals, including the painter, himself, who is shown in the lower left corner signing his creation. This work invites audience participation. Said a neighbor, who was a model for one of the characters, “If you pose in front of the mural you become a part of the painting.” The mural is located at the corner of Thomas and Petronia streets.
Since his frst glimpse of the ocean at the age of 14, Robert Wyland has been on a mission to use his artistic ability to promote appreciation of the undersea world. To this end, he has created some 100 large murals in cities all over the world depicting marine environments and the life they shelter (He calls his murals “Whaling Walls”). Florida’s Radiant Reef 5551 Overseas Highway, Marathon, is designed to expand appreciation and stewardship of the oceans. Other Wyland murals with similar purposes can be seen at the Key West Brewery on Caroline Street, and at MM 92 on the Overseas Highway in Key Largo.
Interaction with art takes on a special meaning when you need snorkels or scuba gear to see it. That’s what will be necessary if you want to view Italian sculptor Guido Galletti‘s Christ of the Deep. Located at a depth of 25 feet in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park off Key Largo, the statue shows Christ in a pose offering peace. The original casting is in the Mediterranean Sea and was created as a memorial to a famous early Italian scuba diver.
ROLLING ALONG THE HIGHWAY Stretching from Islamorada to Key West, The Florida Keys Sculpture Trail is made up of 12 monumental sculptures placed at locations near the Overseas Highway. Created by participants in the Art Students League of New York’s Model to Monument program, the sculptures range from fgurative to conceptual, but each tells a story.
In Islamorada, for example, the theme of the public square is presented in very different ways in Everything Between (metal

Also in Marathon, Leaves of Grass by Markus Holtby is easily visible from the highway, and its interplay of glulam (manufactured wood) and metal surfaces is a striking marker for the business next door.
Well worth a walk at the Lagoon at Grassy Key are Stand Tall, Stand Loud by Aaron Bell and Everyone Breaks by Tanda Francis, both of which address issues of confict and unity. Other pieces on the Trail will be found on Summerland Key, Big Pine Key and Key West.
A map of the Sculpture Trail is included in the Gallery Guide and lists mile markers for all the installations. However, some of the works are tucked away on side streets and may take some time to fnd. Count the search as another outdoor art adventure!

A Musical DRIVE SOUTH THROUGH
Paradise by Nyan Feder
The Florida Keys is well known for its world class fshing and classic island-getaway atmosphere and, sure, you’ll want to enjoy what The Keys have to offer in that regard, but any trip to the chain of islands couldn’t be perfect without experiencing the unique music that awaits the eager visitor at practically every turn of the head, all the way from Mile Marker 106 to the Southernmost Point.
Starting at the very tip of Key Largo, before you even exit “The Stretch” (a length of road and bridges where you get your frst taste of mangrove islands, houseboats and salty harbors) you’ll fnd Gilbert’s. Slightly hidden underneath the last bridge before you hit Key Largo, Gilbert’s is an appropriate frst taste of The Keys atmosphere that comes with a bar and stage that’s been a veteran of salt and keys music for years. Soak in your frst Keys bar with some live music under a tiki hut, right next to the water. Drive a mere seven minutes down US-1 to the world famous Caribbean Club, a must see not only for the promise of a roadhouse vibe, music happening all of the time and a beautiful sunset view over the Florida Bay, but also for the experience of having a beer where the movie Key Largo, starring Humphrey Bogart, was flmed. Next stop, you’ll want to hit Bayside Grille, where you can enjoy Blues and Americana music with a bayside view. A little ways down the road you’ll fnd Marker 88, a massive tiki bar/restaurant with a small beach area to get your feet in the water while you listen to relaxing live music. Keep driving down the road until you see a big mermaid inviting you into the Lorelei, a classic Islamorada destination for sunset

music. Lastly, you couldn’t leave the Upper Keys without a visit to The Florida Keys Brewing Company Beer Garden for award-winning hang and craft beer to boot, and equally ftting live music (think tie-dye vibes).
Among the artists to watch out for while you’re in the Upper Keys are Leah Sutter, with angelic vocals and an eclectic collection of tunes on the setlist; Micah and the Barstool Sailors for your dose of that Island sound and “Islandgrass” music; David Feder who mesmerizes listeners with original World music with a Flamenco fare; Billy Davidson and Steve Webb, our Upper Keys gems in Americana music; Steve Venini, for a mix of Americana, Blues, and Triple A; Alex Caldwell, playing all kinds of hits you will know and love; Scott Youngberg, featuring originals, oldies, classics and the like; and John Mavis, for a night of Country hits and Blues.
After you’ve taken the opportunity to drive a little ways south and admire the breathtaking views of the water on both sides of the road, make sure you continue your musical journey through Marathon. First stop: Sparky’s Landing. There you’ll fnd a tiki bar atmosphere right on the water. Next you’ll hit Havana Jack’s for live music accompanied by food and drink and a view of the ocean. Further south is the Brass Monkey, a classic Middle Keys venue that holds much of Keys’ live music history. A little down the road you’ll see Looe Key Tiki Bar, for your classic island hang, featuring an open jam session on Tuesday nights. Close by to Looe Key Tiki Bar is the Boondocks Grille & Draft House, where you’ll hear a plethora of Keys music with an open mic night on Mondays, which is always a fun way to experience a few tastes of what the local live music scene has to offer. Next up is Mangrove Mama’s, a cute
islandy restaurant with an outdoor patio that offers all kinds of music, from Jazz to Island.
Some highlights of Middle Keys musicians to look out for: John Bartus, who’ll serve upsolo singer-songwriter music from Classic Rock to Tropical Americana; Adrienne Z for smooth originals and classic favorites; Terry Cassidy, if Country, Bluegrass and Americana fts your musical craving for the night; Freddie Bye, a Classic Rock experience 35+ years associated with the Brass Monkey (mentioned above); Ty & Liz Thurman, for some more of that Tropical Americana and some classics that we all love; Roger Jokela, if you’re looking for both Tropical Americana and Western Swing for your live music experience; the Lady A Blues Band, for when Blues music featuring the guitar and harmonica is your taste for the night. Brian Roberts, if a night of dancing is what you have in mind; and Cory Young for Tropical Americana and classics.
Now we’re headed even further south, to the famous Southernmost Point and the destination island of Key West! Here, amongst the exploding arts scene and classic streets packed with fun little shops and historic sites you’ll fnd an equally exciting array of music venues you’ll want to make sure you work into your wandering of the island. Hop on to your rental scooter and drive over to any and all of these iconic musical hotspots, starting with the Green Parrot. Voted the best bar in Key West and boasting a packed live music schedule, you can visit the Green Parrot almost any day of the week and expect a great time with great music, both local and touring artists. Next on our must-stop list is Hog’s Breath Saloon, a classic Key West party scene. You’ll want to check out La Te Da for cabaret night and a taste of Key West’s world

The amazing live music that The Florida Keys has to offer is integral to a perfect Keys trip, as a whole and you can fi nd hidden gems dotted everywhere throughout the islands. This list is a glimpse into some popular Florida Keys highlights and almost anywhere you stop will have live music, but there are many more fantastic local musicians that couldn’t be mentioned within the scope of this article. Looks like you’ll have to give the Florida Keys live music scene a try to fi nd out for yourself what’s in store! Stay tuned for more information or visit keysarts.com for additional details on the Keys’ many music festivals and events occurring year-round at larger venues - Founder’s Park in Islamorada, Marathon Community Park Band Shell, and the Key West Coffee Butler Amphitheater.

Born and raised in the Florida Keys, Nyan is what people call a true “Conch.” Since the age of three Nyan has been studying the guitar with his father David Feder, and has since added Saxophone, Piano and Vocals into the mix of instruments. Nyan grew up performing on stage with his dad and other local Keys musicians, and later went on to study Jazz Studies at the Florida State University, in Tallahassee, FL, as a tenor saxophonist. While at Florida State, Nyan enjoyed being a part of many local groups playing genres ranging from Jazz and Funk to Alternative Rock and Pop; during this time he recorded with notable artists such as George Clinton or Parliament Funkadelic. After his time at Florida State Nyan found work with national touring act Stephanie Quayle as her guitar player and Musical Director and is currently working primarily out of Nashville, Tennessee.
