• Support the enhancement and extension of teaching and learning in Orange County public schools through curricular integration of technology.

• Offer educators in Orange County a source of funding for curriculum projects that would otherwise go unfunded and, therefore, unrealized.

• Encourage innovation and creativity in the curriculum goals and activities presented to Orange County students.

• Provide a measurable showcase of successful examples of curriculum content standards and technology integration.

Purpose of Grants

• Any K12 teacher, administrator, or other certificated staff currently employed by an OC public school district.o Teams must be within a school or schools within a district.

o Substitute teachers may not apply.

o Educators on shared or part-time contracts are eligible.

o 2011 grant winners may not apply.

o An individual may only apply for one grant -- either an individual OR a team grant -- in the same grant year.

• An "Intent to Apply" was not required this year

• Grants must be submitted via Email to [email protected] by February 17, 2012 (4:00 p.m.)

• Cover sheets must also be postmarked by February 17, 2012 or hand carried to OCDE by 4:00 p.m.

• Winners will be announced on March 21, 2012.

• Funding will be released to the recipients' district within three months following the announcement of grant recipients.

• Each recipient’s district MUST invoice OCDE by June 10, 2012, to ensure grant funds are disbursed to the district - this is the grant recipient's responsibility!

• 2012 grants should be completed by June 30, 2013.

• NO identifying information other than on cover sheet - that means no school, district, mascot or teacher names. 

• Do not use a "grant template” OCDE does not encourage the hiring of grant writers.

• Grant funding given to schools and districts must only be spent on grant activities within the implementation year.

• When grant recipients leave a school:

If they remain in the district, the equipment/software will move with them

If they leave the district, the equipment/software will remain at the original school site

Team grants will remain at the school(s) for which they were written, regardless of movement

• Check the rubric for how you will be evaluated - you can find it at: http://www.ocde.us/EdTech/Pages/Submission-Materials.aspx

• It's your job to convince us to fund your proposal!  Be specific and be creative. 

• Make sure you address all points in each section.

• You don't have to list each standard you're using, but they must be included in your response.

• Grant Applicationo You may download the application directly from our website.

o The application is a WORD document and should be submitted as a WORD document.

o Once submitted via Email, you will receive a confirmation email within approximately 72 hours.

o The WORD document must be previewed by both your District Technology Leader and Principal prior to obtaining their signatures and Emailing your submission.

technology.• How the research supports your request.• What the intended learning outcomes (learning

objectives) are and how they will be assessed.

CLEARLY describe (NOT LIST):

• What is innovative about your proposed use of technology? Remember what is innovative to a 'novice' might not be innovative to a 'techie' so make your case!

• Which of the 21st Century skills use of technology will be addresed and HOW? Be specific and don't just say, this is addressing skill X. We need to know you understand the 21st Century skills and how to use technology to meet them.

• Which of the ISTE NETS for Students use of technology will be addressed and HOW? Be specific and don't just say, this is addressing skill X. We need to know you understand the NETS and how to use technology to meet them.

• This is where you describe HOW the technology will be implemented in the learning environment.

• You should show us a range of ways the technology will be used rather than a 'one shot' use of technology.

• If you teach multiple subjects, choose three different content areas.

• If you are single subject, show how the technology can be used across multiple units/content topics.

• Make sure you reference standards integral to your narrative (not a list).

• Make sure you are using the technology effectively and not “just because.” For example - is using an interactive whiteboard to show a video an effective use of an IWB over a regular whiteboard?

Evaluation and Assessment

Assess Student Learning

• How are student learning outcomes going to be assessed?

• E.g., If you used probeware to address science learning objectives, how will you determine that the objectives were met? (Describe the rubric or grading criteria.)

Evaluation of Grant Proposal

• How will you document and determine that you used the equipment for what you said you would?

• E.g., If you requested iPads, how are you going to document that the iPads were actually used and didn't sit in the box all year? What are you considering  to be 'appropriate use' of the iPads?

• Provide a general description of how STUDENTS would present to an audience in a science fair format.

• Describe how teachers and students can benefit from the applications you've outlined.

• There are two elements:o Number of students or classes or courses (subjects)

impacted by the technology.o Sustainability beyond one year--will the technology be

used over multiple years? • The goal is to have the technology be used by as many

of your students as possible over as many years as possible.

• Describe the timeline for implementation (include any pre-training you will do for yourself, other program teachers or students before obtaining equipment/software).

Make sure:

• All calculations are accurate

• Sales tax and shipping are included and accurately calculated

• All expenditures are related to the proposal's objectives

• Show efficient allocation of funds

• An explanation of other funding source(s) is included if total is over $3,000 (individual grant) or $7,000 (team grant)

Provide 5 grant development Professional Development opportunities. These include: 

• Discuss specifications of the grants; then peers read/review  grants.

• District Ed Tech office reads and provides feedback on grants.

• Provide links to past winners videos.

• Provide teachers with links to articles about the topic they plan to write about so they can further solidify their concept.

• Provide links to videos of classroom examples that demonstrate what teachers plan to write about so they can see what students and other teachers can do with the technology.

We also provide a reminder list that includes the following information:

•Be creative. Think of something that's not being done elsewhere. How can you expand on an already successful program?•Pick a dynamic unit as the focus of your grant and build around that.•Make sure your budget is spot on. It's easy to be penalized a point or two for not adding correctly here. Indicate if shipping is included in the price.•Include the standards.•Spell check! You won't believe how many people don't.•Remember to use generic terms for your school, your name, the district and other people in the narrative.

• Ask several people to read your completed application and have them check for:o Spelling or grammatical errors!o Clear and concise writingo Exclusion of acronymso Exclusion of identifying information (school, mascot, ...)
