THEME : PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SUB-THEME : Dreams and Aspirations FOCUS: Defining One’s Dreams TYPES OF ACTIVITIES: TASK 1: CONTEXTUALISATION TASK 2: RESPONSE TO TEXT TASK 3: TRANSACTIONAL WRITING TASK 4: CREATIVE WRITING CONTEXT This unit aims to help you to define your dreams and aspirations. At this tender age, you will naturally not have thought about this too deeply but we feel it is an essential part of the maturing process and have therefore included it here. The unit provides a number of oral, reading and written activities that allow you to demonstrate your language and communication ability.

TASK 1: CONTEXTUALISATION MARKS: None TIME: 60 minutes TYPES OF ACTIVITY: Note taking followed by paired discussion The purpose of this task is for you to be able to:

• think about what you enjoy doing; • ponder over your future and how you see yourself; • listen for information; • make brief notes which will help you in Task 4.

ACTIVITY 1: Individual activity – Who is it that can tell me who I am?

• List 10 things you love to do. • Do you have dreams as a high school learner? What are your dreams? • Think of something that represents you for example a rose, a song, an

animal, etc. Why does it represent you? • If you could spend 1 hour with any person who is your role model, who

would that be? Why that person? What would you ask him or her? Activity 2: Paired discussion

• Share the information you have gathered about yourself with your partner. • Listen carefully as your partner shares with you. This activity should give

you some indication of your dreams and aspirations. Hint to the learner: keep the notes you have made for Task 4.

TASK 2: RESPONSE TO TEXT Time: 60 minutes Marks: 20 RESOURCES: Text in Teacher’s Book; Visuals below TYPES OF ACTIVITY: Listening Comprehension Reponse to visuals The purpose of this task is for you to:

• listen for information; • be able to answer specific questions after listening to the entire text; • show an understanding of how visual texts convey meaning through

analysing layout, visual elements and the photographer’s composition.

TASK 3: FUNCTIONAL WRITING MARKS: 20 RESOURCES: None TYPES OF ACTIVITY : Writing an informal letter The purpose of this task is for you to:

• gather and select relevant and appropriate information; • demonstrate an understanding of the function, purpose and style of a

informal letter; • be able to write relevant points in order to clarify your own views.

Activity 1: Writing a letter to a friend Write a letter to a friend who has recently decided that he or she is going to leave school and start looking for a job. Your friend is in grade 9. In your

letter you must speak about how important education is in achieving one’s dreams.

Your letter must have the format and register of a informal letter and you must include an introduction, body and conclusion. Your letter should not exceed 150 words Checklist: 1. Have I proof read and edited? 2. Is my register informal? 3. Am I encouraging my friend with the words I use? 4. Am I aware of my friend’s age when I write to him/her?

TASK 4 CREATIVE WRITING MARKS: 20 Time: 60 minutes RESOURCES: Dictionary/ thesaurus TYPE OF ACTIVITY: Creative Writing FORM OF ASSESSMENT: Collage The purpose of this task is for you to:

• create a collage of words and pictures which shows originality and imagination;

• enhance layout by including descriptive words and phrases from different sources.

Instructions You will need 1 sheet of A4 or A3 paper. Your collage must be about how you see yourself now and in the future. In order to get a better idea of yourself, ask close friends and perhaps family members how they would describe you. Use these words and associated pictures, drawings and or illustrations. There must be a balance of words and pictures. The marking criteria are listed below:
