Walking Patterns: Started Off Social:

Maya Tejas Athena

“I Started walking with my family as a kid.” “It was my wife who pushed me to start; [also,] she joined me when we first started.”“I started walking in secondary school with friends.”

Crystal Clear Context:

Maya Athena

“We always lived near a park.” (high ability to create a habit)“There’s a small park near the house where everyone jogs or walks around the park”(high ability + social norm/proof of people always walking/exercising in park)

“Since I’m Already Outside”:

Chris

“Couldn’t get my butt out for a walk, but I liked my sugar free Red Bull...So I stopped buying Red Bull in cases; this forced me to walk 2 blocks to 7-11 for my red bull first thing in the morning. And while I was out, I ended up walking 2-3 miles “since I’m already outside.”

Walking Patterns: Started Off Social:

Crystal Clear Context:

“Since I’m Already Outside”:

take away: starting off with family & friends seems to work. (social proof, support, and spending time with people you enjoy)

take away: having a designated location (i.e., park) seems to work.(high ability (no need to think of where), same context/cues)bonus: choosing designated location + social proof (park where it’s common to see others walking)

take away: making it harder to get what you crave (i.e., redbull).(decreases ability to get what you crave, make target habit (walking) the only way to get there, positive reinforcement (reward for walking once you get redbull)

Starfishing: how I’m going to learn to skateboard at a decent level

Walking Patterns: We’re trying to find universal patterns to design the habit of walking 30min+

Starfishing:It’s a systematic way of creating different trials to find what part of the behavior chain works.

I chose skateboarding because it’s a goal that I’ve always wanted to achieve.
