Preface

PREFACE

This course catalogue is especially designed for students of the partner institutions of Mercator School of Management (MSM). The courses described in this broschure are offered at MSM on a regular basis. However, it should be noted that most of the courses are not held each semester. Usually each course is thaught once during an academic year either during the winter semester or during the summer semester. Therefore, each student wishing to study at MSM should check the “Vorlesungsverzeichnis” of Duisburg-Essen University to see which courses are offered during a specific semester at MSM. The “Vorlesungsverzeichnis” can be found online at

www.uni-duisburg-essen.de/VV

All courses at Mercator School of Management are generally thaugt in German language. This course catalogue is seperated into two sections according to the academic level of the courses in the traditional German “Diplom” degree. It takes four to five years to complete the “Diplom” studies. During the first two years students take basic business and economic courses. After having passed an intermediate exam they are eligible to take advanced business and economic courses. The basic business and economic courses of the “Diplom” studies are equivalent to Bachelor courses. In addition, some lower level business and economic courses of the advanced section of the “Diplom” studies are equivalent to upper division Bachelor courses. The upper division courses of the advanced section of the “Diplom” studies are equivalent to courses required to complete a Master degree in Business. The first section of this course catalogue is listing the basic business and economic courses. In the second section advanced courses are listed. The courses for the Bachelor studies are marked separately with the letters “BA”.

BANKING AND FINANCE

Profit and Loss Accounting in Banks Bankmanagement I

The calculation of interest margins is an important objective of this course. The main topic of discussion is the "Matched-Funds-Transfer-Pricing-Concept" as central calculation method of modern bank management. The "Matched-Funds-Transfer-Pricing-Concept" can be used for an individual and a marginal analysis of transactions. It defines a credit/deposit spread as profitability standard. In this context the present value approach of the "Matched-Funds-Transfer-Pricing-Concept" includes all future profit contributions of a decision and transfers them to the moment of acquisition. Beside the matched market interest rate the customer interest rate consists of a premium for operating expenditure and a risk premium. Methods to calculate and analyse these components are also discussed in the course. Students shall learn to quantify all component parts of a banking transaction to be able to control a bank in a value-oriented way. Risk Management for Transactions and Portfolios Bankmanagement II

Especially during the last years banks suffered from credit losses. Therefore this course begins with an overview of all risks in banks. Afterwards approaches to quantify and manage the most important risks – interest rate, market price and credit risk – will be analysed comprehensively. The main topic of discussion will be the modern perspective of risk which describes risk as unexpected loss because strictly speaking the expected loss can't be described as risk but as part of the costs. In the context of the continuous discussion about the shareholder value which assesses the return of a bank according to the

Page 28: CourseCatalogue - überarbeitete und leicht geänderte Fassu…environment, competition analysis and portfolio analysis – and operational planning with a focus on budget planning

Advanced Courses

20

risks the students shall be able to understand and implement a value-oriented bank management. Profitability Analysis and Capital Allocation Bankmanagement III

The analysis of the profitability is a very important topic of discussion in banks and other companies. In this course the basic scheme of the Return on Equity (ROE) analysis will be presented. The ROE analysis consists of the components of the profitability of a bank and allows for various ratios to be derived. By establishing relationships between important cost respectively earnings figures and e.g. the underlying business volume, it is possible to compare banks differing in size and structure in a systematic way. Additionally, the hierarchical ROE analysis concept clarifies the different approaches to business policy in order to systematically improve bank profitability and shareholder value. The ROE analysis is also a central tool to simulate changes in input parameters and to show their cumulative effects on important cost, earnings and performance ratios. Following the analysis, strategies to improve the profitability can be implemented and capital can be allocated according to the profitability of the business units. Financial Risk and Banking Supervision Bankmanagement IV

Generally this course deals with banking supervision in Germany. Besides the general framework we will discuss how to handle the different approaches of determining the own funds for the purposes of Principle I. Moreover students will learn how to compute the required own funds for market risk positions and for counterparty risks. Financial Valuation and Theories Finanzierungstheoretische Bewertung

This course covers fundamentals and valuation of derivatives, the importance of capital structure, the portfolio theorie, the capital asset

pricing model and valuation of companies. To maximize investment values, investors must learn to assess two key determinants: return and risk. The portfolio theorie of Markowitz and the capital asset pricing model are the most important approaches of assessing the risk/return-relationship of an investment. Finally students will learn how to compute the enterprise value by using the discounted cash flow model. Business Policy of Banks Geschäftspolitik der Kreditinstitute

This course deals with fundamentals of business policies and the structure of the german bank market. Students will learn how to manage a bank on a strategic basis. Several possibilities of strategic planning will be discussed and topics like diversification, growth opportunities and types of organisation will be covered as well. By discussing several case studies about recent bank decissions students will learn more about the importantance of the business policy of a bank. Case Studies (BA) Fallstudien

Students are expected to solve case studies that cover recent topics of bank management. Before working on the case studies students have to attend an introductionary lecture where the theoretical models and approaches that are important for the case studies will be discussed. The topics will change from year to year.

Logistics Systems Logistiksysteme

This module aims at understanding and constructing flow-oriented systems of logistics predominantly from industrial- and trading companies’ point of view. Starting from the origins of this logistics system perspective, models and conceptions of flow-oriented logistical systems as well as elementary functions of nodes and edges will be explained. In addition, standard problems of logistics-oriented constructions and arrangements are discussed. Following this insights, more specific questions on logistics system configuration in procurement, production, distribution, as well as examples for challenges of planning and controlling integrated flows are provided. Finally, selected perspectives will be considered in order to complete the view of further challenges when configuring systems, for example the configuration of integrated supply chains. Basics and Methods of Designing Logistics Networks Grundlagen und Methoden der Gestaltung logistischer Netzwerke

Logistics networks may be characterized as systems of cooperation arrangements, which consist of resource nodes and their respective exchange relations. Their respective specific characteristics result from their range of functions per node, their grade of information and flows of goods as well as from their spatial-geographical dispersion. A further characteristic stems from the question whether the respective flows of goods are controlled by the source (e.g. an industrial firm) or by the point of destination (e.g. a commercial enterprise). This leads to the
