DNA for Beginners

Dee Virtue

Course Description: If you graduated from high school or college

before 1980 you probably learned very little about DNA. There's a

reason for that: a significant majority of what’s known about DNA

has been learned in the last 10-30 years!

At the beginning of this (lecture and discussion) course we will look

very briefly at the early history of DNA and its chemical structure

and behavior. In later classes we will discover how DNA controls

and directs all cell activities, how it is regulated, and how it causes

mutations. During the last two classes we will look at a variety of

current applications of DNA technology (agriculture, criminology,

industry, medicine, CRISPR) and some of the ethical issues they

pose. (This is a 6-week course.)

Instructor: Dee Virtue taught Biology and AP Biology at Orono

High School and other locations for about 30 years. She has taught

several courses for PVSC including Evolution; Bacteria, Viruses, and

the Immune System; Genetics; DNA; and Visible Genetic Traits of

Cats. She is a life-long Maine resident with absences due to 20 years

as military spouse.
