The winners havebeen announcedto Corels 2011I n t e r n a t i o n a lDesign Contest, and the entries areoutstanding. Whatcomes through clearly is the tremendous originality of thecontestants. This is apparent in their style, in their choiceof subject, and, Im sure, even in their denition of what

    makes good design.

Every CorelDRAW user has his or her idea of what isgood design, and it may change with the type of projectas well. But not everyone is able to state what makes itgood; many would say its a feeling, a look, which comesthrough the art and also meets the needs of a customer. Ibelieve its a good idea to describe what you do in words;it claries and sharpens how you work. So

So that sent me on a search for some good denitions ofgood design. Here are three different examples; see what

    you think.

Bildig block ad big pictrJacci Howard Bear from About .com says good designhas two layers the building blocks and the big picture. Her building blocks include lines, shapes, mass, texture, and color. The big picture, however, includes sixprinciples balance, proximity/unity, alignment, repetition/consistency, contrast, and white space.

Commicatio artChuck Green from ideabook.com Design Store saysdesign is a communication art, and people should follow

a higher standard. His ve standards are:1) Design is more than meets the eye. He says its

as much intellectual and visceral as it is visual.2) Design is about communicating benets. Whats

in it for the reader/viewer?3) Design is not about designers. Its for your client

not for your portfolio!4) Design is not an ocean; its a shbowl. Its got to

t your target market.5) Design is creating something you believe in. He

says its better to step away from a project than tocompromise your values.

10 PriciplGerman industrial designer Dieter Rams, who is oftenlinked with the Braun company, wrote these 10 principlesof good design in 1985.

    1. Good design is innovative.2. Good design makes a product useful.3. Good design is aesthetic.4. Good design makes a product understandable.5. Good design is unobtrusive.

    6. Good design is honest.7. Good design is long lasting.8. Good design is thorough down to the last detail.9. Good design is environmentally friendly.10. Good design is as little design as possible.

Okay, so what do you think? Id love to hear from readersabout your principles of good design. Send me yourthoughts at [email protected]

    Arragig Objct (X5)

Objct i CorlDRAWThere are two basic types of objects in a CorelDRAW layout, Bitmaps and Vectors.

Bitmap ObjctBitmap objects are essentially pictures. Even if its a picture of a line drawing, its stilla bitmap. Bitmaps contain PIXELS (Picture Elements). Each pixel has a speciclocation (i.e. address) in two-dimensional space. It also has a color assignment. Whenwe view bitmaps normally, our eye merges the pixels into a continuous tone image.

Vctor ObjctVector objects are described by mathematical formulasthey include lines; arcs;circles and ellipses; squares and rectangles; polygons; text; etc.

Arragig ObjctObjects in the layout can be arranged, either by (1) Grouping them, or if they arevector objects, (2) Combining them. Bitmap objects cannot be combined; they canonly be grouped.

Gropig ObjctWhen objects are grouped they

    1. Lock in their spatial relationshipfor arrangement purposes, groups ofobjects are treated as a single object; that said, objects within the group canbe rearrangedi.e. their spatial relationship to one another can easily bechanged.

    2. Maintain their individual characteristicsin the case of Vector Objects thatmeans they maintain their unique outline and ll characteristics.

In addition, a group of objects can be grouped with other objects or groupsi.e. youcan have groups within groups.

Combiig Vctor ObjctOnly vector objects can be combined together. When that is done, the objectsbecome a single object. That meansas a single vector object, it can only have onell characteristic and one outline characteristic. Combined objects lose their originalindividual characteristics.

In addition, the spatial relationship between separate objects that are combined canonly be changed using the shape tool, or by breaking the objects apart.

CoclioBoth types of object arrangements have their advantages and disadvantages. More

    on that in future tips.

ItrodctioIn this article we will be briey discussing HTML used in the construction of a commonweb page and how HTML can be accessed in Corel Website Creator (CWC) X5. Formore in depth examples of HTML, visit www.w3schools.com .

Chick noodl CodMost internet web pages are made of a variety of code types. HTML, CSS, JavaScript,JQuery, AJAX, PHP, and SQL are all commonly seen in current web pages. Eachof these code types has a different base function. Each of the code types handles aportion of the web experience. In the early days of internet web programming all ofthe code was stuffed directly onto an HTML document. Now structure, functionality, content, and appearance are all handled separately. In CWC, we can access codefor all of the languages either through the interface or by pointing to external les.

HTMLHTML, or Hypertext markup language, is the structural component for most webdocuments. An extremely simple HTML web page example can contain the documenttype, a head, and a body.

The preceding web page is completely blank. HTML has dened what document typeto use, and that there is a head and a body. There is no content in the webpage. Notice that the head and body sections both have an associated

How to chag a lmt ID i Corl Wbit CratorThe element ID is one of the most important attributes of any element in an HTML page.By using an exact element ID, we can alter, delete, augment, and completely changethe appearance and contents of the element. To access the ID, we select the Image element properties and simply type in the ID we would like to use (see Image13). Corel Website Creator automatically assigns an ID, but we may want somethingmore memorable than Picture9. When we work with dynamic scripting languageslike JavaScript, many of the operations start with a search for a specic element ID.

ReviewSo far, in this series, weve covered:1. Why we chose sandblasting.2. Products you can produce with the process.3. An overview of the process and its requirements.4. A detailed review of the hardware and materials requiredfor the sandblasting process, which includes Sandblastcabinets, Compressors, Abrasives, Nozzles, Dust Collectors,Masking materials and their applications, Exposure units for

photo-masking (Vinyl cutters for vinyl masking and Laserengravers for laser masking)

Before we continue into creating artwork for sandblasting,we need to cover

What you must absolutely have for sandblasting vs. optionalequipment

First, what you absolutely must have1. A Sandblast cabinet

    2. Dust Collector3. Abrasive4. Nozzles5. An Air Compressor6. Sandblast masks

    a. Permanent Stencils acrylic/metal (These can be purchased from many craftstores.)b. One-time use Stencils (Vinyl which are cut by hand, or Photo Masks preparedby outside companies).

    Then, Optional Equipment1. A graphic workstationi.e. Computer

    2. Graphic Software

    3. A more sophisticated method of producing masks:a. Vinyl Masks cut by machineb. Photo Masks (A Film Printer and Exposure Unit)c. Laser Masks cut with a laser engraver

Starting out with a ComputerAs we mentioned above, you can start sandblasting withouta graphic workstation, i.e. computer. There are permanentstencils you can purchase from many craft stores. You

can choose to hand-cut vinyl. You can also send camera-ready art, which you might receive from your customers,to sandblast supply companies and they will create photo-masks for you. (Typically this is only cost effective for multi-piece runs.)

That being said, when we purchased our sandblast equipment,we already had a number of computer workstations and wereworking with CorelDRAW. In addition, since neither one of usis very good as a freehand artist, we also purchased graphicsand clipart packages that had images we wanted to use.

Armed with a computer, CorelDRAW (which already comes with a lot of clipart), and ourclipart packages, we simply assembled images with text as required for our projects.

The computer also allows us to maintain les of past projects as templates that wecan modify to use again and again.

If you dont already have a computer, we would recommend anything that can runCorelDRAW, or whatever graphic package youd like to use. Since, for photo-masking,all you need to do is print your artwork on a lm printer, it doesnt matter if you choosea PC or Apple system, as long as its compatible with your printers.

If youre also running other equipment, like engravers, vinyl cutters etc.,

Memory 512MB of RAM (1GB recommended) Authors note forWindows XP we recommend 512 as a minimum and prefer 1GB, especiallyif you intend to work with bitmap images. For Windows 7 and Vista werecommend 2GB as a minimum.

Hard Disk Space 750MB (1GB for typical installation without content) Authors note thats what is required for the program, youll need additionalspace for le storage. We recommend 80-120GB drives as a minimum.

    Getting Started in Print-and-Cut

    Heat-Applied Graphics

Diversication is the name of the game for any business that wants to survive and thrive in todays economic

conditions. And there is no single piece of equipment that is more diversied than a printer/cutter.

Print/cut machines have been around long enough that most industry members know what they are, butjust in case you are one of the few who doesnt, a print-and cut device acts like two machines in one.First, a design or graphic is inkjet printed on white media, then the machine draws the media back onthe roller and on this second pass, a knife contour cuts each image.

If youve used a heat-applied material, its weeded and applied to apparel or anything made out of fabriclike tote bags, sneakers, and umbrellas, with a heat press. If youve used a self-adhesive material, youweed it and apply to whatever it is you are decorating. Banners are directly ink jet printed so there is no

weeding or additional application steps for those.

Its hard not to be impressed with

    the amazing versatility and potential

protability of print and cut technology.

Limitl dcoratioWhats so cool about a printer/cutter is there is an almostendless list of items you candecorate with it. On the apparelside, there are printer/cuttermaterials that will go on almost

anything including hard-to-decorate fabrics like nylon,Spandex, and even leather. On the sign/graphics side, youcan make window decals, wallgraphics, posters, bumperstickers, banners, magnets, all kinds of signage, and evenoutdoor awnings that go overwindows and doors.

What does this mean for your

shop? No matter what type ofcustomers you have, you cannow offer a greater selection ofproducts to help them promote their business, event, or activity. If its a golf tournament and youve donegolf shirts, suggest a customized umbrella or shoe bag. If its a trade show, instead of only uniforms, suggest stickers to be given away, tote bags, or a banner for the booth.

If youre doing team uniforms for the local high school, think of all the window decals, bumper stickers, and wall graphics that the booster club can sell with the high schools logo and team name. You nowhave the power to incrementally increase a sale to every single person who walks in the door.

You can even do full vehicle wraps with a printer/cutter, a service that commands top dollar in most markets.Having this versatility means that you have multiple revenue streams from a single piece of equipment.

The other great plus of a printer/cutter is you no longer have to charge by color. The inkjet printer cando limitless colors, and you charge a at fee. Theres no screen setup, no digitizing, none of the addedfees that are necessary with screen printing and embroidery that many clients balk at when you haveto explain them.

To return to the example of the local high school, imagine this scenario: While the shop owner talks tothe coach about uniforms, another staffer explains to the booster club president about fund-raising andhow the club can sell decals with their players names and numbers to raise money.

Most high school teams have sponsors who need to be recognized. You can easily provide a banner

for each supporting company to hang up against the back fenceof the baseball eld. Not nished yet, the savvy shop owner topshis presentation off by showing how custom wall graphics of theplayers or a giant mascot can be applied to almost any surface. Ina short conversation, this owner has covered four applications thatthe team would easily be interested in and all of them produced onthe same piece of equipment. Cross selling is the name of the game!

expad or biPrint and cut is a great t for any business that is looking to expand, whether its a decorated apparel shop, awards and trophies, orpromotional products. My wife and I purchased our rst RolandVersaCAMM printer/cutter about six years ago. We had anembroidery-based business and also were doing some heat-appliedgraphics at the time.

This technology has allowed us to expand our business intoso many different areas, and it has helped us compensate

for the times when embroidery is slow. With the printer/cutter we produced signage andother media from it. I think any business that is looking for a way to smooth out the upsand downs of current products and services should consider this type of investment

Even if you already own a vinyl cutter, it still makes sense to consider a printer/cutter aswell. Because a vinyl cutter can do only one color at a time, it dramatically limits whatyou can do graphically. To produce multicolor graphics, you need to layer the media, which creates extra bulk and can be unwanted as well as time consuming and costly.

With a print-and-cut machine, you have the ability to produce limitless colors andeven photographic prints with little effort. This allows for a higher price point as the

perceived value is higher even though the labor is the same.

Having the vinyl cutter, in addition to this, allows the shop owner to maximize all ofhis equipment as there are times when a single-color design is needed. In our shop,we often have both pieces of equipment running to meet all of our customers needs.

eqipmt OptioThere are a few manufacturers out there, with Roland and Mimaki being the largestand the best known in the industry. Buyers need to evaluate what options are bestsuited for them and what support is available. Whichever brand you decide on, makesure that the dealer has a good support system available.

Look for on-site and phone support, Web-based support, Youtube videos, and

places like MyVersaCAMM.com where users help one another answerquestions. When evaluating the machine, it will be necessary to decideif features such as metallic inks and white inks add value to the currentbusiness. Get samples of the print output and look for a dealer that willprint your own graphics to see if it is a solution that will t in your shop.

Metallic inks are a relatively new technology and are mostly used when

creating decals or stickers. By using these shiny colors as a highlight, you can add some extra umph to a design. White inks also are availableonly for graphic applications. They are used to create a white underbasefor clear stickers that are commonly stuck to a window. Previously awindow sticker would have had to be backed with a white background, but now the printer creates the white underbase in ink and inkjets thedesign on top. So it saves labor and makes for a thinner nished product.

The newest and smallest printer on the market is the Roland BN20VersaStudio. It starts at 20 inches wide and goes all the way up to 72inches and higher. Most shops will choose a machine in the 30-inch to54-inch range depending on what they need to produce.

I always encourage a newbuyer to look at expansionin the future and make surethey are choosing a machinethat will meet all of theirneeds. Our rst Roland wasa 30-inch printer/cutter. Wequickly found out that it ishard to produce a 36-inchtall banner with only 30

inches of print space! If Icould go back and do it allover, I would have gonewith the 54-inch machine inthe beginning to allow us tomeet all of our customersexpanding needs. For shops look ing a tportability, the VersaStudioBN-20 20 inch is ideal, asits light enough to transport

to an outdoor event. So when choosing, make a list of all the things you imagine youmight use the machine for and that will help guide you to choosing the right solutionto meet your needs.

Another plus of a printer/cutter is it does not necessarily require a lot of space.Depending on the size, you can go as small as a counter top for the 20-inch machine. However, you might need an entire room to accommodate a large 54- to 72-inch

    machine.

show M Th MoThe capital investment will depend on what size machine. The 20-inch machine sellsfor as low as $8,500. This is the rst time this technology has been available for under$10,000. We have already seen a huge demand, and I expect it will continue as it isnow an affordable option for even a small shop. Most print/cut equipment ranges inthe mid- $10,000 range up to $30,000 for a large 54-inch printer.

There is a learning curve just like any other piece of equipment. Make sure that youget your machine from a dealer who is dedicated to training. When I do an installation,

    it typically encompasses an

entire day. I offer about twohours of setup and calibrationfollowed by user training.

There also are classes availableto show the user how to use theequipment to make all of theproducts available. If you havestrong graphics knowledgealready, it will help. I wouldestimate that on average, users

are procient at operating theirnew equipment within one totwo months; however, theyshould be competent andproducing products at the endof the rst day!

Rapig ProtProt margins vary by type ofproduct. In the garment industry, you can have anywhere from athree to four times markup. In

    the sign and decal industry,

margins are much higher.Sometimes the markup canbe several hundred times thecost of the item produced. Forexample, in my area bannersare sold at around $8 persquare foot retail. It costs under

$1 per square foot to producethis product. Remember thoughthat a banner sale is a single-purchase item for the customerwhile garments are highervolume so the profit gainedfrom the customer usuallyevens out.

Those needing training havea wealth of options. There arewebsites such as www.myversacamm.com and many Youtube videos available for

free. I am constantly adding more videos, and I take requests on my Youtube channelStevenJacksonIW.

There also are on-site training and workshops available to allow the user to gainmore condence and expertise in operation and sales of products. I currently teacha two-day 101 workshop and a vehicle wrap two-day hands-on course with anadvanced course being developed. The demand for continuing training is enormous!

Adob v. CorlBoth are great programs that will allow the user to produce graphics. I personally ndthat CorelDRAW is easier to use and a very intuitive program. All of my training videos

and hands-on courses are centered around CorelDRAW. From visiting customers anddoing installations of new equipment I have seen that CorelDRAW is faster to set upand train on for the new user.

I am very passionate about this type of technology and how it can transform a business. If you are interested, do some research and ask the questions! I think that any shoplooking into expansion should consider this type of machinery. It can transform acustomer coming in the door for a single product into a multiple revenue stream. They are already getting the products from some other place and most of us wouldrather go to one shop rather than three or four to get what we need for our team ororganization. Keep those customers coming back to you!

TOPAZ LABS just released B&W EFFECTS as its newest plugin compatible withCorelDRAW X5 Graphics Suite. B&W EFFECTS adds substantial creative capabilitiesto X5.

To be competitive in the personalized products market, you should differentiate yourselfby creating images that are optimized for each method of image reproduction. B&WEFFECTS can help in several different areas. Here are just a few:

In LASER ENGRAVING you can control contrast, exposure, and adaptive exposure.

Adaptive Exposure enhances the dynamic range of an image. This allows you toimprove both detail and depth. At higher settings, you can create HDR-like images. In addition, you can use other controls to:

tab Simplify images and create stylized looks. tab Convert images to infrared to bring out hidden dramatic details. tab Correct exposure, balance, lighting, and redene tonal values.

Other engraving software can convert a photo for engraving, but they do not possessthe same degree of creative editing capability.

    Donna Grays 2nd book,Its All Relative!Surviving & Thriving in a Family Busi-ness, was published in September 2007.

It describes herquest to identify thekeys to success forsmall business, and

family businesses inparticular. She inter-viewed top businessesnationwide and dis-covered ve commonqualities implementedby successful businessowners. Check it outat the CorelDRAWProBookstore,www.corel-drawpro.com/AllBookstore.htm

September is here and right behind is fourth quarter. This is the time of year that we can use forjust checkingin to see if were close to what our goals called for onJanuary 1. In the last couple months, Ive talked toothers who are racing to get theirducks in a rowso theyear end will bring good news on their bottom line.Ive had chats with some who are worried. Theyreworking hard to deal with the economic challengesbeing foisted on them, and, Ive heard from several inour industry who are complaining that even their mostdependably loyal customers are taking their sweet time

in placing orders. Some customers are downsizingorders, or replacing the products theyve been usingwith items at lower dollar amounts. When any companytakes a hit like that, it throws everything off, and canmake the owners, and staff, vulnerable to joining the

When times are tough, its easy to fall into thepoor mehabit, even to the point of digging a deeperawful pit.National best-selling author, and coach, Jack Caneld, writes in his book, The Success Principles, Most

people in our culture remember their failures more thantheir successes. Caneld suggests building a successlist, which for businesses, in our industry, can mean awall display, a three-ring binder, or some kind ofshowof the work your company has done for clients, so thatboth existing and prospective customers can see yourareas of expertise and success.Successful selling strategies are more important thanever in a weak economy, and they become even morenecessary for fourth quarter if the year has brought lessthan expected sales. After checking in on year-to-date

information, its time to create a fourth quarter game

plan that will get the company to a healthy bottom lineat years end. But rst, a couple of housekeeping detailsto take into consideration are:

Is the store/selling facility clean and inviting?Have gures been changed or updated? Doall display pieces have current dates/years? Isthe restroom ready to be used by a customer? Is there gum on the sidewalk entryway? Haveyou done a complete walk through, recently, ofyour facility? Have you looked at your place ofbusiness through your customers eyes?

Do you have a handle on your inventory levels?

Are you stuck in a too much stock rut? Werecently did a clean out and found lots andlots of gures that havent been popular withour customers for many years. Do you havea plan for getting rid of unused inventory? Areyou, now, due to the sluggish economy, buyingon as needed basis?

Have you reviewed the companys break-evenpoint? Its surprising how little things like anincrease in shipping costs, that arent guredinto the mix, can change the bottom line.

These little things might make the differencein whether or not a sale is protable. Think about charging for services that the

company has been doing for freelikedelivery. With escalating fuel costseven thebig delivery companies are implementing fuelsurcharges.

Has your company analyzed its customers, and what and why they buy from you? Whatproducts, services, and/or features keep themcoming back?

Does your company watch what other

companies, both in and out of the industry,

are doing to attract and retain customers? Areyou monitoring the competition, both locally andon the Internet?

Does your company participate in a buylocalgroup or campaign? While its easy forcustomers to let their ngers do the walkingon the Internet, they still prefer to shop locally, where they have the opportunity to see, touch, and feel the goods, rather than shopping froman online catalog picture. This is a good timeto remind customers and prospects that buyinglocally saves fuel and delivery costs.

Does your company act like a winner?
