CORE 39 NEW for Fall 2014

A university education prepares individuals to live wisely in a diverse and global community by helping students acquire both discipline-specific competence and broader knowledge and skills that reach across disciplines. Core 39 includes courses in the broad traditions of the liberal arts and a common set of experiences that are integrated across the curriculum. In our core, students expand foundational skills in communication and critical thinking, explore how different fields create and use knowledge, broaden their viewpoints through the study of diverse and global perspectives, and refine their writing skills through writing intensive experiences.

The Statewide Transfer General Education Core (STGEC) was developed by the public institutions of higher education in Indiana in response to Senate Enrolled Act 182 (2012). It enables a student who satisfactorily completes an approved program of general education in any one of those institutions to transfer that coursework to any other state educational institution as a block of 30 credit hours towards the general education core requirements.

Information about the STGEC can be found at: www.usi.edu/core39/transfer

One course is required from 4 of the 6 Ways of Knowing categories

• No two courses selected may have the same prefix

• With the exception of World Languages, a course used to satisfy Ways of Knowing must have a different prefix than any course used to satisfy the BA/BS requirements

• Courses satisfying World Languages and Culture Ways of Knowing may have the same prefix as the World Language/World Languages and Culture satisfying the BA/BS

• Students earning a bachelor’s degree which is not designated as a BA or BS must choose either the BA or BS track for the purposes of Core 39 requirements.

Bachelor of Arts: OR

o World Languages (9 hours)o Natural Science with Lab (4 hours) • No more than 9 hours of courses with the same prefix can

satisfy the BA requirements.

• Students earning a BA must successfully complete a four-course sequence in the same language through Language 204 or higher.

• Natural Science must be a lab course. If Natural Science 108 is selected, then two Natural Science 108 courses must be taken to satisfy the lab requirement.

Bachelor of Science:o Natural Science including 1 Lab (7 hours)o Social Science (3 hours)o World Languages and Culture (3 hours)• No more than 9 hours of courses with the same prefix can

satisfy the BS requirements.

• If Natural Science 108 is selected, then two Natural Science 108 courses must be taken to satisfy the lab requirement.

o l Diversity (1 course)o n Global (1 course)o s Writing Intensive (2 courses)• Embedded experiences may be courses found in other areas

of Core 39, a major-specific course, or an elective course. Core 39 courses that count towards embedded experiences are marked with corresponding experience symbols (l n s).

• Foundation courses should be completed before the embedded experiences.

• There are two writing intensive experiences. One has to be at 200+ level and one has to be at 300+ level.

• ENG 201 is a pre-requisite for all embedded writing intensive courses.

o Composition (6 hours)o Communication (3 hours)o Mathematics (3 hours)o Physical Activity and Wellness (1 hour)

o First Year Experience (1 hour)• All first-time, degree seeking students must enroll in a course

satisfying the First Year Experience requirement during their first semester at USI. This applies to both full-time and part-time students. Students with CAP or AP credit should complete First Year Experience.
