The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets pulled off another big win Tuesday night when they defeated South Laurel, 77-74 in overtime. A basket by senior Jared Barton with 20 seconds left in the overtime gave the Yellow Jackets a one-point lead. South Laurel had its chance to win the game, but a Austin Rader shot missed with six seconds left on the clock. Sophomore Dalton Sizemore grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Sizemore connected on the two free throws to put Williamsburg ahead, 77-74. South Laurel threw up a des- peration shot at the buzzer that failed. It was Williamsburg sec- ond district win in less than a week. The Jackets knocked off Corbin Friday night. The win gives Williamsburg a 2-1 record in the district standings while South Laurel drops to 1-2. “It was a hard-fought game on both sides of the ball,” Williamsburg Coach Patrick Robinson said. “I thought South Laurel came in here and played a tough game. I thought our kids played well too.” “A game that is played that hard and that well, it’s bad that anybody has to lose,” Robinson added. “I thought we came in and did the things that we were trying to do. We executed pretty good,” Robinson said. The Yellow Jackets (8-9) jumped out to a 7-2 lead before South Laurel came battling back and cut the lead to three by the end of the first quarter, 21-18. South Laurel went on a 9-0 run and pushed ahead 27- 21 before the Yellow Jackets came roaring back. Cameron Smoak tied the score at 30-30 with an inside the paint bas- ket late in the second period. The Cardinals took a 33-32 lead to the dressing room at the half. The third quarter was nip and tuck with several lead changes. A Baxter 3-pointer at the end of the third quar- ter sent South Laurel ahead going into the final period, 49-47. The Cardinals pushed the lead out to six (55-49) before Barton and Sizemore rallied the Yellow Jackets with some big baskets down the stretch. A pair of free throws late in the fourth quarter actually put the Jackets ahead, 60-59. But, again South Laurel pushed the lead out to four (65-61) before a 3-point- er from the left corner by Barton had the Jackets within one (65-64). Baxter put South Laurel ahead by three when he con- nected on a pair of free throws wit :20 left in regulation. Down 67-65, Barton went to the free throw line with nine seconds left and hit the first of two free throws. He missed the second, but Skylar Griffith was there to grab the rebound, Sizemore was fouled and hit both shots to tie the game at 67-67. South Laurel commanded the first three minutes of the overtime period. The Jackets were down 74-73 when Griffith hit a basket at the one-minute mark setting the stage for the win over the Cardinals. Sizemore, who was 10- for-10 from the line, led the Yellow Jackets with 22 points. Barton finished with 20 points while Cameron Smith had 12 points and eight rebounds. Baxter led all scorers with 23 points. Corbin 79 Middlesboro 51 The Corbin Redhounds rebounded from their loss to the Yellow Jackets with an overwhelming victory at Middlesboro, 79-51. The Redhounds tagged the Yellow Jackets with their fifth straight loss. Four players scored in dou- ble figures as Zach Farley poured in a game-high 19 points. Caleb Maguet fol- lowed with 17 points. Joey Shelton added 14 points while Robbie Igo had 12 points. Middlesboro (8-8) led 5-4 when the Redhounds reeled off 12 unanswered points as Farley tossed in three of those baskets. Igo had four points and Shelton two points. When it was all said and done the Redhounds owned a 16-5 lead. Middlesboro battled back to within eight at the end of the first quarter, 18-10. The pressure defense by the Redhounds allowed on four second quarter points by the Yellow Jackets while Corbin scored 15 points and took a 33-14 lead to the dressing room at the half. Senior Victor Berezutchi scored eight of his nine points in the quarter. Trevor Hill added a 3-pointer as well. Corbin (8-6) continued to pull away in the third quarter with the first six points for a 39-14 lead. The Redhounds would lead by as many as 31 points in the fourth quarter when Maguet put Corbin ahead, 72-41 on his 17th point of the game. Corbin Coach Tony Pietrowski called it a “team game and outstanding effort” by the Redhounds. Corbin will travel to Whitley County Friday night for a district battle with the Colonels. The Colonels were defeated 87-37 by Perry Central last night. No details were available at press time. The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets pulled off another big win Tuesday night when they defeated South Laurel, 77-74 in overtime.
