Knowing your question words and predicting questions is vital. To reach

Grade C or above you need to be able to understand all the questions you are asked.

Dónde…? Where ...? ¿Adónde…? Where to …? ¿Cuándo…? When …? ¿Qué…? What …? ¿Cómo…? How …? ¿Cuál / Cuáles…? What …? Which …? ¿Cuánto tiempo…? How long …? ¿Quién / Quiénes…? Who …? ¿Por qué…? Why …?

Listen to some questions that Tom is asked. Tick off any questions that you predicted correctly. Note down any that you did not have already.

escribir2 Write your questions from exercise 1 in Spanish. You can use the language you have seen in Module 1 and a dictionary to help you. Example: ¿Cuándo fuiste de vacaciones?

escribir1 Look at the photo above and brainstorm a list of eight questions that you could be asked about it. Write them in English. Example: When did you go on holiday?

As part of your speaking Controlled Assessment you may choose to do a picture-based discussion. For this kind of assessment you will talk about a photo by answering questions. Here is a photo taken on a student’s summer holiday. The tasks below are based on this photo, but doing them will help you to prepare for a similar discussion on your own photo.

To acheive Grade C you need to show that you can use a variety of language. Show that you can use more than one tense. Use the preterite to talk about your holiday in the ◆

past, and quiero + infinitive or voy a + infinitive to talk about future plans. Use simple time expressions like ◆ el año pasado (last year), el año que viene (this year), primero (first), luego (later), después (after that) to add structure. Use connectives to extend your sentences: ◆ porque (because), también (also), pero (but).Give opinions. Can you spot examples of where Tom has done this? ◆

To aim higher than Grade C you need to go beyond the basic information and really extend what you say.

As well as saying what you did, using the preterite tense, make sure you include descriptions of ◆

things on your holiday using the imperfect. Show you can use verbs to talk accurately about other people as well as yourself. Who else does ◆

Tom talk about in his conversation? Always extend your opinions by justifying them. Where does Tom do this in exercise 4? ◆

To achieve an A* Grade you need to show examples of complex language in your speaking. Use negatives like ◆ no… ni… ni… (neither… nor…) and tampoco (not either). Use sophisticated opinion phrases: ◆ lo mejor del hotel era…, lo peor era…Join ideas together with connectives, and try to use more than one tense in some sentences, ◆

e.g. Me gustó el hotel porque era grande y lujoso, pero la próxima vez voy a ir a un alberge juvenil porque es más barato.
