FOUNDATION DEGREES WHAT IS A FOUNDATION DEGREE COURSE? A foundation degree is a degree level qualification which combines academic study with work place learning. De-signed in association with employers, they are qualifications to equip people with the relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to achieve academic results as well as improve performance and productivity in the work place. A foundation degree is the equivalent of two thirds of a full honours degree and is a fully flexible qualification al-lowing students to study part-time or full-time to fit their lifestyle. HOW LONG IS A FOUNDATION DEGREE? A full-time foundation degree will usually take about two years to complete, and part-time courses may take longer. Completing an honours degree following on from a foundation degree will normally take an extra year. WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS? There are no set entry requirements for foundation degrees. Formal qualifications are not always necessary as appropriate commercial and industrial experience can be more relevant. All foundation degrees take into account work experience and, in some instances, it may be possible to accredit existing company training received by an employee with foundation degree status – this is generally investigated on an individual company basis. WHAT ARE THE PROGRESSION ROUTES FROM A FOUNDATION DEGREE? As a graduate from a foundation degree you will have many different options. You may decide to continue with your current studies for a further year (more if part-time) to achieve a full honours degree, go on to further pro-fessional qualifications, or use the foundation degree to change careers or further your current career. Because a foundation degree is a nationally recognised qualification and one which has a value within the Credit Accumula-tion and Transfer Scheme (CATS), the possibilities for progression are vast.

HOW TO CHOSE A UNIVERSITY
Once you have a list of universities/colleges that you like the look of it is important to narrow it down.
Firstly make sure that every institution on your list does the subject that you want to study. Read up on each institution - there are many resources that you can use to obtain different viewpoints:
For the 'official view' read the institution's prospectus or go to their website. For an independent view try reading an ‘unofficial’ guide. To make the best decision, you need to see the place for yourself, so try to visit the Universities that you feel fit your criteria, i.e. what will the place be like?
LOCATION
1. Civic Universities - sited within a city centre usually with halls outside of the city in the suburbs 2. City-campus Universities - usually within a major city, but sited on parkland campus(es) outside of the city centre 3. Campus Universities - all sited on one campus - usually in a rural setting 4. Collegiate - life and learning based in colleges, usually in a rural setting (except for Cambridge, Durham, London and Ox-ford) 5. Do you like the area and what it has to offer?
SOCIAL LIFE
You will be in the place for at least three years and the friends you make will be with you for life, so finding out the student-mix and what clubs/societies are available is very helpful.
LEARNING RESOURCES
Learning resources are very important as you will need them for research and further reading. How good are the libraries? What is the ratio of number of students to computers? Is internet provided? and is it free?
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation is generally the most expensive part of going into higher education. See if you are guaranteed a place in univer-sity/college owned accommodation in your first year. Decide whether you want to be catered for or cook for yourself and then see what the quality of accommodation is. This is best done first hand so try to visit a hall of residence when you visit on an open day.
TRANSPORT
How far is it from halls to the main campus? If you need to use public transport, find how much it costs.
SUPPORT AND LEARNING
Find out what sort of grades students get at the university/college, especially in the subject that you want to study. See what the destinations of the graduates in your subject are too.
Also, find out what sort of non-curricular support the university/college offers (such as health + welfare - counselling etc.). When at the university/college you will be assigned a personal tutor to look after things as this, so find how many students there are per tutor and find out how regular tutorials are.
