Principal’s News It is hard to believe that we are at the end of first term and have successfully worked our way through eleven weeks of classwork, assignments, sporting competitions and carnivals, excursions, socials and countless other events that have kept us all busy. It has been wonderful to be able to share in these experiences with our students and to watch them learn and grow. I look forward to returning in week five next term after my leave and being involved in their learning throughout the remainder of the year. This week we will be holding our annual athletics carnival, end of term assembly and school ANZAC service. I would like to invite parents to come along to any of these events to share in the experience with our students and staff. Congratulations and thank you to Mr Andrew Phelan and Mrs Janeen Coutanche for the very successful Duke of Edinburgh hikes last week. This is a massive excursion to organise and would not be possible without the commitment and hard work of staff. I would also like to acknowledge and thank Mr and Mrs Kinsela, Mr and Mrs Austin and Mr and Mrs Stanley for allowing us the use of their farms. This week we will welcome our Director, Mr Duncan Auld

and Principal School Leadership, Mr Chad Bliss to the school. The purpose of this visit is to discuss the achievements of our last school plan, development of the new school plan, school practices and procedures in monitoring HSC requirements and the future directions of our school. This will be Mr Auld’s final visit to our school in this capacity as next term we will welcome Mr David Lloyd as the Director, Public Schools NSW for Lachlan. Congratulations goes to Kirralee Thomas and Mary Talbot for being this week’s winners of our weekly merit draw and the final winners for the term.

Farm Case Study On Thursday 5th April, Year 11 Agriculture and Primary Industry students travelled to Greg and Louise Hamilton’s property “Charlesville” to conduct a Farm Case Study. The students had a great day and learnt a lot about the farm and the enterprises that are run there. A lot of discussion was held on the particularly dry conditions facing our farmers at present. Thank you to the Hamilton’s for hosting us. Mrs Parker.

Under 14 Buckley Shield On Friday the 6th April, Canowindra High School took on West Wyalong High School in Round 2 of the Under 14’s Buckley Shield. The boys got off to a strong start forcing West Wyalong to make various mistakes in the first 10 minutes. Mid way through the first half, fatigue began to set in and West Wyalong broke the line for consecutive tries. Canowindra was reluctant to go down without a fight and Dylan Slattery found the line with a strong run, which was converted by Michael Coady to bridge the gap, 28- 6 at half time. Under the very hot conditions the boys rallied at half time aiming to close the deficit in the second half. Dylan Kemper led the charge with some strong defence on the bigger West Wyalong team. His efforts inspired his team mates to rally together for a comeback. Hugh Breen latched on to an intercept and streaked down the sideline looking for a try where he was captured by West Wyalong’s cover defence. Two tackles later Dylan Slattery got his second try of the day which resulted in a successful conversion for Michael Coady once again. Unfortunately West Wyalong continued to pile on the points, however Canowindra refused to throw in the towel and Dylan Slattery got himself a hat trick of tries in the final minutes allowing Michael Coady to complete a 3 from 3 with the boot. West Wyalong ran out winners on the day 60 - 18 Congratulations to all the boys for the effort they showed in some testing conditions. We would like to thank West

Wyalong for supplying a referee as well as Hayden Cummings and Lane Fisher for being linesmen on the day. This Tuesday the boys

will be going around

again as under 13’s and

15’s in the Country Cup

Rugby League Gala Day

at Tom Clyburn Oval.

A Little Taste of French Culture On Tuesday of Week 9, Year 7 LOTE classes learnt a little about French Easter traditions. Canowindra High School students participated in an egg-rolling competition, followed by an Easter Egg hunt. French children celebrate Easter in similar ways to Australian children. As 90% of the French population are Roman Catholic, the French follow the Catholic celebrations of Easter. Unlike Australia, church bells are silent from Good Friday (the death of Jesus) until Easter Sunday (when Jesus rose). French children are told that the church bells fly to Rome to visit the Pope on Good Friday and return with chocolate bells, chocolate eggs and chocolate fish on Easter Sunday. French children play a range of games on Easter Sunday, including egg rolling and egg tossing. Children roll a raw egg down a small hill or toss an egg in the air repeatedly until a final egg remains. The egg rolling is meant to symbolize the boulder being rolled away from Jesus’ tomb. Mitchell Stephens (7X) and Deegan Hogan (7Y) managed to be the last students with an unbroken egg, while Cooper

Scifleet (7Y) and Kyra Fisher (7X) rolled their eggs the farthest in each class. Cooper was the overall champion with his egg

rolling approximately 15m. Mrs Curtis.

School Uniforms:

Winter is coming and it is time to be organising your winter uniform items!

New items: These can be purchased through Mr Embroidery in Cowra or alternatively, the school has a large number of second hand black polar fleece jumpers available for purchase. Please be aware that school jackets are not available off the rack and will need to be ordered through Mr Embroidery.

Layering: As it becomes colder we need more layers to keep warm. White t-shirts or tops are best for this. Please remember that coloured hoodies are not appropriate.

Sport: Black tracksuit pants can also be purchased from Mr Embroidery. If purchasing another brand please choose those without stripes or coloured logos. Any logos should only be of a small size.

Labelling: Please remember to always label your uniform items, especially jumpers, jackets and tracksuit pants. This makes it much easier to return them if found. If an item is lost and has no name, it will be put in the Lost Property room which is located in the locker room.

Should you listen to music when studying? In an ideal world we would probably say no music while doing schoolwork except classical baroque/instrumental music which actually can help your memory by getting the brain into a relaxed state. But a good compromise is as follows. 1. If the work is not very difficult, and fairly routine, then you can have whatever music you like on. It will make you feel

relaxed, it will make you feel like the time is going faster and help you stick to completing the work you need to do. 2. But if the work requires higher order thinking skills, i.e. studying for a test, trying to understand something difficult,

doing an essay plan, trying to learn or remember anything – then switch the music off. Otherwise it will end up tak-ing you much longer to complete the task and to retain what you are learning (even though you are convinced it is not affecting you!).

3. Just get in the habit of stopping and asking yourself each time before you start work whether it is the type of work

that requires you to really focus and concentrate and if it is – switch the music off for awhile. The same approach goes for doing work in front of the TV. You might also like to visit the Dealing with Distractions unit at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au for some more ideas and in particular blocking software for technology distractions.
