Library Report
Well, the year is getting away from us, no mistake. A busy and successful year it has been too.
Results are coming in from the Literacy and Numeracy classes in Years 7 and 8 and as we analyse the data the
overwhelming impression is a sea of green (improvement). What we knew anecdotally is being borne out by
the numbers. The majority of students engaged with the lessons and used the strategies taught and so made
progress. This progress was as apparent for our high achieving students, as it was for those who need
substantial support. While the classroom teachers who developed and delivered the programs deserve praise,
the highest accolades rest with our School Learning Support Officers who built supportive relationships with
students, provided motivation, explained strategies, maintained records, organised teaching materials and were
collaborative, innovative and flexible. All done with a sunny disposition!
Library use has continued to rise in 2014. Despite removing the computer terminals, many students came to
the library at lunch time and book borrowing is at a peak. Twice a week we have Homework Centre. It has
become a regular sight to see half a dozen teachers and 30 plus students here until 4:30 or 5:00. The senior
study space is now being utilised for its intended purpose and students report they are grateful for it. The
reality of our remoteness means we have quite a few students who access Distance Education and they use the
Library for phone conferences and video conferences. It is exciting to see these students develop the
independent learning skills to log into these virtual classes and make the most of their education.
Meanwhile Ms McCormack (aided and abetted
by Tayla Coveney) has been conducting a
complete stocktake. Using her whizz-bang
technical skills she has been able to develop
cordless scanning using the school’s wi-fi and
her laptop. This has made the process much
easier as books can be returned without having
to be returned…….It almost seems a pity that
the Department is introducing new software.
Last week staff from the Library had a late night
session preparing for the year ahead. There will
be significant changes, with regard to staff and
the way programs are delivered. However, if the
effort, dedication and professionalism of the
people I have been fortunate enough to work
with this year is any indication, all is in good
hands.

PBL RAINBOW REWARDS
79 students who achieved a Rainbow Level for each of the four terms this
year participated in a great obstacle course constructed by Mr Marshall
and the SRC. It was mudificient!
The 125 students who
achieved Rainbow Level
this term had a great
afternoon at the Cobar

Well done to the SRC for
organising both events.

Year 9 Canberra Excursion
A number of our Year 9 students have attended an educational tour of Canberra, our
national capital this term from, Monday 1st to Friday 5th December, 2014. Students
participated in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history,
culture, heritage and democracy. Students visited the Australian War Memorial,
National Museum of Australia, Federal Parliament House, Old Parliament House,
The Australian Mint, Questecon, The Australian Institute of Sport and Telstra Black
Mountain Tower.
The Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program contributed $30 per
student towards travel. This was applied to the individual student costs of the
excursion.

Helping teenagers
celebrate safely
Parties are part and parcel of a
teenager’s life. While most celebrations
go off without a hitch, they can go
wrong and get out of hand – particularly
if the party is unplanned.
Here are some tips to help ensure your
teenager and their friends have fun but
remain safe.
