PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEEducation Week 2017The Education Week Awards evening was held at the Singleton Civic Centre this year. Awards were received by students, staff both non teaching and teaching and community members.

Special programs were also highlighted and once again our Hospitality students under the expert direction of Mr Mead showcased their amazing skills. There are photos on our Facebook page and on p14.

Y10-Y11 Subject Selection EveningSubject selection evening was held in Week 1 this term. It was well attended with students and parents alike taking the opportunity to listen to guest speakers and then discuss options with staff from different faculties.

Thank you to the staff who attended and spoke on the night. Most students have made their initial requests and we are currently processing and collating their requests.

There is still time to see Mr Mulvihill if you have not yet completed this.

New School PlanThe new school planning phase has begun in preparation for the 2018-2020 plan. Mr Gauci and I attended preliminary training last week. This was followed up with a planning session for the entire executive. I am keen to include ideas from all stakeholders and an opportunity will be available at the next P&C meeting for anyone who wishes to be involved. Thank you to Deirdre , Jo and Tracey for liaising with the Elders and the Aboriginal community for their input.

Parent Teacher EveningParent Teacher evening was held last week. This is a great opportunity to discuss how well your child is learning and achieving.

As we have followed the same format for a few years it is time to evaluate the success of these evenings. Mrs Ballard will be conducting a survey to gain feedback on such areas as timing, suitable nights and ways that we can do better in this area.

Please look out for Mrs Ballard and her team with their iPads and help us determine what we are doing well and what we may need to change.

Non-Local EnrolmentsEver increasing student numbers at Singleton High are making it harder to facilitate non-local enrolments - often referred to as ‘out of zone’ enrolments. One key point is that Singleton High has a maximum number of students we can enrol which is determined by the capacity of our permanent classrooms. You can learn more about our policy on p4 of this newsletter.

Takahata VisitTakahata students, staff and community members arrived last week for a whirlwind visit. They began with a meet and greet and taste testing of lamingtons and vegemite Sao biscuits. Takahata staff also enjoyed a collegial dinner with representatives of the Singleton High staff on the first night.

The assembly was a delightful combination of performances from both our students and the students from Takahata proving that language is no barrier to a great cultural experience. And a huge thanks to Ms Cowmeadow for her organisation and our host families for supporting this wonderful cultural experience. See p6 and p13 for more about our guests.

RATIONALEThis school’s local area is determined by the Department of Education and Training through a process involving consultation between Properties Directorate, the School Education Director and the Principal.

In accordance with the Education Reform Act 1990 this school will seek to ensure that every eligible child will have a place at Singleton High School if he or she chooses to enrol here. A child is defined by law as a person under 18.

VERIFICATION OF LOCAL RESIDENCYFor a student to be enrolled as a local placement, parents will be asked to provide 2 forms of proof that they live in the local area and that the child being enrolled also lives in the local area. Documentation could include a rental agreement, a rates notice, an electricity bill, a statement from Centrelink, a bank or building society statement etc.

NON LOCAL ENROLMENTSThe primary criteria for acceptance of non-local enrolments include the availability of appropriate staff and available accommodation within the school structure. The Department of Education and Training states that “No additional accommodation (permanent or demountable) will be provided to cater for increased enrolments resulting from non – local placements”

ACCOMMODATIONSingleton High has a ceiling based on the number of permanent classrooms.

ENROLMENT PANELThis school has an enrolment panel consisting of the Principal, Deputy Principal, staff member and a community member.

The Principal has the casting vote. The panel is responsible for developing and evaluating the criteria for non-local placement. The criteria will be consistent with DEC guidelines.

CRITERIA: NON LOCAL PLACEMENTIt is the decision of the enrolment panel that if accommodation and staff are available, significant criteria (not in priority order) for non-local enrolment will comprise the following:

• Commitment to learning• Academic performance and

achievements• Physical, emotional and medical needs

related to a student’s well being• Cultural achievements• Sporting achievements• Compassionate circumstances

• Proximity and access to school

WAITING LISTA waiting list for non-local applications seeking placement in Y7 and Y11 will be established.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORTWelcome back to a busy Term 3,

I am honoured to have accepted

a permanent Deputy Principal

position at Singleton High School.

I am really looking forward

to working with the Students,

Parents/Carers, Staff and the

Community of Singleton High.

I started my career in Cobar as a

PDHPE teacher. During my time

there I relieved as a Head Teacher.

I transferred to Lake Munmorah

High School as a PDHPE Teacher

and spent two years there, one year

as relieving Head Teacher Mentor.

I then decided to gain promotion

and ventured to the furthest

western school in NSW, Broken

Hill High School. Here I started as

Head Teacher for PDHPE and after

five terms was relieving Deputy

Principal and then for the last 6

months was relieving Principal.

My experience and leadership skills

developed in a range of schools

and through a variety of positions

will help me to support students at

Singleton High School. As Deputy

I will be focused on helping them

achieve and succeed and thrive.

My values and expectations are in

line with Singleton High’s. I have

high and clear expectations for staff

and students, this will ensure that

the latter will become good citizens

when they leave school.

My initial goals are to improve

student punctuality to class and

ensure all students are in the right

place at the right time.

A crucial factor that supports student

achievement is based on being in

class, following the teacher’s and

school’s rules and working to the

best of their ability.

PAUL GAUCIPREPARING OUR STUDENTS FOR THE JOBS OF THE 21ST CENTURY

Singleton High School is by far the

biggest school I have worked at;

being in class, on time and working

hard are the bedrock of success.

It has been a pleasure to already

be involved in the following

activities: Y10 into Y11 subject

selection evening, Singleton Art

Show, Education Week Presentation,

Takahata visit, Parent/Teacher night

and Elevate Sessions to name a few.

As you can see the term has had a

very busy start and I also got the

opportunity to attend professional

learning on ALARM (which is

exciting for all students and should

see an increase in their learning

outcomes) and 2018-2020 School

Planning session.

I look forward to working with and

making a difference for all students.

I would like to remind you that I am

Deputy Principal for Y7 and Y10.

I am also available for discussions

about your child. Please call the

office to arrange a suitable time for

an appointment.

Education is the passportto the future, for tomorrow belongs tothose whoprepare forit today.MALCOLM X

DEVELOPING YOUNG LEADERS From 1 – 7 August our community warmly welcomed our Japanese sister school from Takahata. This year we had ten Japanese students and two teachers.

This was the 21st visit from our Takahata friends. To mark this occasion the Mayor of Takahata also came to Singleton along with a delegation of Board of Education officials and school principals.

Our Takahata friends had a busy but memorable stay and left with lots of happy memories.

Highlights this year were the boomerang painting at Kawul, cooking lamingtons, laser cutting and the day trip to Newcastle.

This visit also provided our students who are currently studying Japanese with a unique opportunity to transfer their language skills from the classroom environment across to real situations.

Y7 students were thrilled to act as tour guides for our visitors and did a fantastic job in introducing our school to our Takahata guests.

This cultural exchange would not be possible if we did not have such enthusiastic host families that open up their homes. Thank you so much for being the most important part of this program. Singleton High will reciprocate a visit to Takahata in 2018. See p14 for more photos.

TOMMY’S DAYThe SRC are focusing their energy on this year’s Tommy’s Day; which is a key annual event that will be celebrated on Friday 8 September.

On this day we raise much needed funds for the Cancer Council, Singleton. This day is also about raising awareness about cancer.

There will be a talent quest, fundraising stalls and also a silent disco. Students are asked to bring pocket money to contribute to a very worthy cause.

The SRC are also seeking any student or staff member that would like to shave their hair for Tommy’s Day. Last year we had two brave teachers, Ms Greenhalgh and Mr Davis shave their head. Reece Davies of Y12 also raised significant funds by shaving off his famed afro.

If anyone is interested please see a member of the SRC.

HANDBALL COMPETITIONIn Week 3 the SRC organised a handball competition for students during the recess and lunch breaks.

The two winners from each year group went through to the finals on the Friday. The competition was free to enter and the prizes were: 1st Fitbit, 2nd $50 Sports Power Voucher 3rd Giant Handball.

The competition was fierce and the players intense, with Liam McManus of Y11 beating Peter Watson of Y11 to claim the title. The SRC thanks the students and staff who participated.

AN UPDATE ON G1It’s been a very busy year in G1! We’ve had many new students, and started a variety of new and interesting programs.

With Mrs Strachan, G1 have been completing the ‘G1 My Kitchen Rules Challenge’. The students have their own teams and each fortnight prepare an entire meal to serve to the rest of the class.

They also designed their own menu and table theme. The students have enjoyed it immensely and prepared some high quality dishes that would even impress Pete and Manu!

In Agriculture with Miss Fitton, the students have been working on a yabby project. They cleaned up tanks and created their own habitats to house their yabby. The students loved having their own little creature to be responsible for and watch grow.

For NAIDOC week, G1 listened to the Dreamtime story of the Rainbow Serpent. They then each created a small piece of the rainbow serpent on A4 paper making its body as colourful as possible, and then creating a black background with traditional Indigenous dot painting. When all pieces were joined together, the result was beautiful.

The class has also started a fitness program this year, where students take time to be active every day - it is a great way to start the morning and we have found that most of our students are excellent at playing sports. Students have played ball games, basketball, long jump, running races, soccer and touch football.

It is fantastic to see all of our students participate in the activities, enjoy some competition and work as a team.

Our students are of course always hard at work in the classroom. We are seeing huge gains both academically and socially. Our goal in G1 is to always be preparing students for their future options and teaching them how to be successful members of the community.

It has impressed me to see just how far each and every student has come.

I have to thank our SLSO Virginia for all the time and effort she puts in for our students. Some programs and activities would not be able to run without her assistance.

Her help in the classroom is greatly appreciated and she inspires us all to be positive at school every day.

BEST PRACTICE ARCHIVINGSingleton High School Library is once again a model of best practice for the state; with a review of its Library Archive programme being published in SCAN, the NSW department of Education Journal for educators. Head Archivist, Sally Mctaggart hopes the archive will be used more in future and reminds all parents that past yearbooks are now available via the OLIVER system.

CHESS MERIT LEAGUETerm 3 sees the return of the Chess Merit League to Singleton High’s Library. This league is a competition with no maximum or minimum matches. Each player organises there own matches with who ever they want to, when they want to. They score 3 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 1 for a loss. It is possible with this system for a player with 31 losses to defeat a player with 10 wins!

LIBRARY MOVEMENTSThe library team is augmented at the moment with the addition of Tia Smith and Samantha York of Stage 5 joining as Library monitors, and Ms Laura Bush from the Singleton Library is on Practicum for 3 weeks. Hopefully we can get some students joining up to the town library while she is here, see p10.

HARNESSING TECHNOLOGYOur Library Technician and Assistants attended a training day with library staff from all over the state on day one of Term 3 at the Crowne Plaza. The focus was on Technology in the library. Of particular interest was the information on OLIVER, which is the new library management system which has now been rolled out statewide.

BILLY WINS MALAYSIA

Y9 student Billy Van Eerde got his international career off to a flying start when he won the third round of the KTM RC Cup at the famous Sepang circuit in Malaysia.

Van Eerde had to work hard to stay ahead of a persistent pack of desperate competitors before slipping away to win by over two and a half seconds.

Making his feat truly spectacular is the fact that Ven Eerde did so after having just a half-hour practice session and another of qualifying to learn the track, and while competing against riders who had raced two RC Cup rounds there previously.

Van Eerde crashed out on the fourth lap of Sunday’s rain-affected second race, while trying to become familiar with the wet weather performance of tyres he’d never used previously, and while holding fifth place. So his determination and resilience are also impressive. Congratulations Billy!!

Welcome back to Semester Three! The HSIE faculty are very excited to deliver dynamic lessons and units of work for History and Geography at Singleton High School.

Our classes from Y7 to Y10 are now all studying the new ‘National Curriculum’ History and Geography courses, so far this semester:

• Y7 began studying the new Geography

Syllabus – focusing on Landscapes and

Landforms and Places and Livability.

• Y8 have returned to their study of History

and will be exploring life in Medieval

Europe before moving on to studying a

comparison between the colonization of

Australia and the Aztec Experience.

• Y9 started the new Geography Syllabus,

studying Biomes, Food Production,

Sustainability and Changing Places.

• Y10 are exploring a depth study

developed by the staff at Singleton

High School on the Holocaust. In Term

4 students will move on to study the

concept of Civil Rights by comparing the

experiences of African Americans in the

20th Century with Australian Aboriginals.

The assessment tasks for these topics are listed on our assessment schedules which are accessible through the school sharepoint site. Students and Parents can access digital copies of most assessment tasks via the Millennium portal.

If you have any questions about your child’s HSIE class please contact me through the school on 6571 1199.

Ungooroo celebrates accreditationSINGLETON Aboriginal community controlled health organisation Ungoo-roo GP & Health Services has received a national award of accreditation, demon-strating its commitment to quality and safety within its practice.

The important recognition was received from Australian General Practice Accred-itation Limited (AGPAL), the leading not-for-profit provider of general practice accreditation services with-in Australia.

AGPAL chairman Dr Rich-ard Choong said accredita-tion shows the practice team makes a significant invest-ment and commitment to quality on a day-to-day basis, across all levels.

“Achieving accreditation is a major achievement for any practice and a clear demon-

stration that Ungooroo GP & Health Services is striving to improve their level of care to both patients and the com-munity,” he said.

“Practices seek accredi-tation because they want to do their best and view this as another step towards excel-lence in patient care."

Ungooroo CEO Taasha Layer said accreditation was a huge milestone for Ungoo-roo GP & Health Service and Aboriginal communities of the Upper Hunter.

“It provides a standard of excellence as an Aborig-inal community controlled health organization and sets a benchmark in providing quality and safety within our general practice,” she said.

To achieve accreditation, a practice team works over a 12-month period to imple-ment the Royal Australian

College of General Practi-tioners (RACGP) standards for general practices (the recognised national stand-ard), which provides a tem-plate for quality care and risk management.

The AGPAL accreditation program was developed to provide a range of minimum expectations for patients sur-rounding safety and care by assessing the practice envi-ronment and their processes.

Ungooroo GP & Health Services proudly displays the AGPAL symbol for all their patients to see.

“We want community members to know that their wellbeing is our priority,” Dr Choong said.

The Ungooroo practice is located at 128 George Street, Singleton. For information visit www.ungooroo.com.au or call 02 6571 5111.

WAITING ROOMS: By choosing to attend an accredited practice, Ungooroo patients know they will get quality and safe care that meets the RACGP standards.
