Cool ideasDid you know that…Comic

What’s wrong with the multinationaloil companies?

Dear readers,

The price of oil is skyrocketing, as we’ve alldiscovered at the gas pump if not before.Meanwhile the cost of producing crude oil hasremained practically unchanged. The resultis record profits for the multinational oil com-panies on crude oil and simple, high-volumestandard products like gasoline, diesel fuel andheating oil. And lubricants? They too arebased on crude oil and have risen in priceaccordingly. But the production and distribu-tion of lubricants is complex and demanding. The diversity of products is enormous and, driven by technology, ever-increasing, whilethe quantities produced remain relativelysmall. Marketing these products requires adeep technical understanding of customerneeds and the technology in use.

Thus lubricants have always been more of asideline for the petroleum multinationals. Andin the current situation, the financial marketswon’t allow the complicated lubricants busi-ness to dilute the highly profitable crude oiland gasoline business. So get rid of lubricants?

As a private Swiss family business, theBUCHER MOTOREX-Group is not drivenby the financial markets. Lubricants are ourcore business. For us, daily contact with cus-tomers, complex technology and developingnew lubricants are not nuisances, but a wel-come challenge. We are pleased, therefore, that new customers every day from everyindustry are discovering the benefits of work-ing with MOTOREX.

Yours,

Edi Fischer, Chairman of ManagementBUCHER AG LANGENTHAL

Conserving resourcesWherever possible, MOTOREX uses envir-onmentally friendly technologies in line withthe ISO 14001 environmental standard at itsproduction plant in Langenthal.

One innovative example is the plant’s own truck wash. Instead of hard water fromthe tap, soft natural rainwater is collected and treated to make it suitable for washingvehicles. The facility boasts a modern wastewater separation and water recovery sys-tem and uses rapidly biodegradable cleaning agents. As a result, significant quantitiesof water are saved each time a truck is washed, and the trucks come out sparklingclean without the use of water softeners.

Motor scooters are nowhere more athome than in the streets of a big city. Andwhile the busy streets may be a scooter’snatural element, stop-and-go city trafficmeans there’s a lot of high-temperatureback-and-forth inside a scooter’s trans-mission. sophisticated infrastructure. It is re-markable how quickly newly developeddevices and test methods are imple-mented and used in chemical engineer-ing products at Langenthal. For morein-depth testing, MOTOREX worksclosely with selected technical institutes.

The MOTOREX in-house infrastruc-ture can be used for some 120 analysisand testing methods. Here are a fewof the most important:

Precision in a hurryBecause delivering extremely preciseresults even when under the gun is essen-tial in today’s world, MOTOREX hasonce again invested major resources inspecialist staff and infrastructure.

Before, specialized external labs wereused to conduct certain analyses and stepsin the development process; now the bulkof the necessary work can be performedat MOTOREX. Tribology experts oftenturn to new analytical methods and

likewise analyzed in the in-house lab,and the results are used directly in fur-ther product development.

A practical exampleFor outsiders the world of theMOTOREX laboratories may appearsomewhat abstract. The following sce-nario gives a clear picture of the lab’sday-to-day work in analysis of raw mat-erials, finished products and customersamples from actual use.

Direct customer benefitsMOTOREX has a tradition of regularinvestments in research and developmentand has made them a key factor in itssuccess.

The emphasis in the MOTOREX labsis not only on pure science, but also onpractical results. Countless customersamples are tested every day with writtenreports forwarded to our partners. Thislets customers know in a timely fashionwhether a lubricant needs changing orif it’s safe to keep using it.

Naturally findings from racing, whichconsistently deliver vital informationunder extreme deployment conditions, are also valuable. Racing samples are

Viscosity at 40 °C /100 °C and the viscosity indexdetermined from these figuresDetermination of reciprocal laminar displacementof two adjoining fluid layers.Loss of viscosity, espe-cially in the higher temperature range, may meanreduced lubricating capacity and increased wear.

Infrared readingsIR spectra can be used to identify even minor vari-ances from fresh oil.Additional signals in thesespectra may be caused by admixture of foreign oils, rust contamination, coolant intrusion or oxidationproducts due to thermal or temporary overloadingof the lubricant. When using biofuels in diesel en-gines, one sometimes finds significant fuel concen-trations in the motor oil.

Stability over time by measuringtotal base numberThe increase in oxidation products during use re-duces TBN as alkali reserves decline. If TBN fallsbelow a critical threshold, negative changes in thetribological characteristics of the lubricant couldresult.

Flash pointThis value indicates possible contamination of themotor oil by fuel.Dilution by fuel results in reducedlubricant effect; early recognition can prevent majordamage.

Measurement of elemental contentThis measurement provides information on thewear resistance of a motor oil formulation. In addi-tion to iron, primary indicators include other alloycomponents such as chromium, molybdenum, copper, etc.Modern alloys and composite materialshave made additional elements such as siliconand tungsten a focus of testing. It is often possibleto identify problem areas in an engine based onelement concentrations.

Testing of additive concentrationsChanges in these concentrations can indicatewhether admixture of other oils has occurred.Top-ping up with a lower-quality motor oil often resultsin a reduction in the additive concentration.

Measurement of evaporation loss with NOACKThis method is used to determine oil loss throughevaporation.Ever thinner lubricants representa major challenge in modern motor oil formulas.

Measurement of low-temperatureflow behaviorThis is done with the CCS (cold-cranking-simulator),whereby a motor oil is chilled to low tempera-tures and the oil resistance (dynamic viscosity) ismeasured.

Alexandra Bühler runs a system check before

putting the WAB’s 230-passenger Pano 143

into service.

with railway technician Peter Kaufmann.

Repor tRepor t

A trip up Monte Generoso is always worthwhile, whether for the interesting train ride

or the magnificent view.

Versatile: the engineer applies her many

talents to the fullest at the Monte Generoso

Railway.

Physical movement and mobility havealways been important to the native of theBernese Oberland. She began her careerover 25 years ago with a commercial ap-prenticeship at a travel agency and latercriss-crossed Europe as a flight attendantwith Crossair. Her athletic talent stoodher in good stead: “You have to be ingood physical shape to work in the air,”says Bühler. She later made use of herfitness during many years as a ski instruc-tor in Saas Fee and Grindelwald.

Opportunity at MGBWhen the Monte Generoso Railway(MGB) in Ticino announced that it wasseeking locomotive engineers, Bühler,

who has an interest in machinery, ap-plied… and landed a job! Today theMonte Generoso Railway employs elevenengineers, four of them women. Althoughthe job is generally male-dominated, thefocus is on ability, not gender. ThusAlexandra Bühler received a great deal ofsupport during her training and was givennumerous valuable tips from her trainersof both sexes. The summer season forour engineer from north of the Alps lastsfrom April through October.

Many different factors influence the oper-ation of a train: the rolling stock, signals, terrain, the weather, whether any perma-nent way work is in progress… TheMonte Generoso Railway dates back to1890, when cars were pushed by steamlocomotives built by SLM in Winterthur.Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler pur-chased the railway in 1941. In the earlyeighties the line was electrified.

Today passengers have a comfortable40-minute ride from Capolago to thesummit, 1,704 meters above sea level. There they enjoy a magnificent viewof Lakes Lugano, Como, Varese andMaggiore, the Po plain and Milan, and the landscape stretching from theApennines to the Alps.

Entirely on your ownConcentration and self-reliance are re-quired and nurtured in the engineer’s cab.A signal malfunction, a warning light onthe control panel – Alexandra Bühler al-lows nothing to faze her. She has to keepa clear head and make the right decisions, even if there’s a wild boar on the tracksahead, as actually happened not so longago! A constant radio connection to thedispatching office ensures timely exchangeof information.

Since the engineer’s cab is not separatedfrom the passenger compartment onMonte Generoso trains, there are alwayspassengers who want to chat about thebeautiful flora and fauna of Ticino.“That’s when you really have to be alert,”says Bühler with a self-assured grin.

A welcome changeAt the start of November, AlexandraBühler changes employers, engineer’s cabsand geographical environments: fromMediterranean Ticino up into the Alpinemassif of the Jungfrau Region. This bringsvariety to her work – the best of bothworlds for a locomotive engineer!

At the Wengernalpbahn (WAB),Alexandra Bühler keeps busy not only inthe locomotive cab, but also in the main-tenance shop. Train timetables are strictlyregulated, and the “reserve time” is usedto carry out repairs and maintenance atthe shop in Grindelwald-Grund. Inciden-tally, both railways use MOTOREX lubri-cants, including many biodegradableproducts. Bühler is interested in machin-ery and not afraid to work alongside rail-road equipment specialists underneath thetrain. Not a bad idea, since the engineersare responsible for inspecting trains in themorning before they make their first runof the day. The engineers must check tomake sure monitoring systems and brakesare working and the train is fully opera-tional.

Alexandra Bühler was introduced

to railroads by her partner. Her talent

and skill havemade her one of the

few female locomotive engineers in

Switzerland. In the summer she works

in Ticino, in the winter against the

backdrop of the Eiger – there’s no lack

of variety.

A knack for machinery is a mustThe three different generations of trainsin use on the WAB require native sensitiv-ity and profound skill. The oldest typeBDhe 4/4 self-propelled railcars werebuilt in 1947, the BDhe 4/8 dual cars arefrom 1988, and modern low-floorpanoramic articulated trains from StadlerRail built in 2004 round out the fleet.“They all run completely differently, andthey brake differently too,” says AlexandraBühler during a breathtaking trip on thecog railway up the Kleine Scheidegg.Kleine Scheidegg station is 2061 m abovesea level, right at the foot of the world-famous north face of the Eiger.

A dream jobBeing a locomotive engineer is an ex-tremely demanding job. The constant dif-ferences in altitude in the mountains arechallenging, as is the responsibility forthe passengers. Still, Alexandra Bühlerwouldn’t trade jobs with anyone in theworld, at least not for now. Her voice willbe calling out “All aboard!” for manyyears to come.

Compressed natural gas (CNG)

powered vehicles boast low exhaust

that are creating a CNG boom in the

public transit sector.

The latest trend: mobile natural gas enginestion residues can impact lubricant equilib-rium. MOTOREX has developed itsFOCUS CNG SAE 10W/40 high-gradehigh-lubricity motor oil for mobile CNGengines in utility vehicles and buses.FOCUS CNG uses LowSAPS (low sul-fated ash, phosphorus and sulfur) and thelatest additive technologies. The synthetic(Synthetic Performance) specialty motoroil provides ideal lubrication and lastingprotection against wear and oxidation forall components.

For diesel engines tooDoes your organization use utility vehiclesand buses with both natural gas and dieselengines? MOTOREX FOCUS CNGSAE 10W/40 is approved for both CNGand diesel engines (see box). This means asingle motor oil can be used to service amixed vehicle fleet.

Your MOTOREX partner or our technicalcustomer service department will be gladto provide further information.

A growing number of public transit enter-prises are turning to CNG technology. The main component of CNG is the gasmethane. Natural gas often also contains sig-nificant admixtures of long-chain hydrocar-bons such as ethane, propane and butane.Natural gas is a non-toxic, combustible, colorless and generally odorless gas, making

it a perfect fuel for passenger vehiclesoperating in densely populated areas.

For refueling, the gas is compressed to250 – 300 bar in a compressor. At thepump, it is dispensed into a special tankin the vehicle at approximately 200 bar.Natural gas is measured in units of onekilogram. One kilo of natural gas contains

about as much energy as 1.5 liters (0.4 gal-lon) of gasoline or 1.3 liters (0.34 gallon) ofdiesel fuel.

only about 9 cm in length, are manufac-tured entirely in-house.

The ratchets are made of 1.4305 and1.4197 grades of stainless steel. They aremanufactured on various machines, includ-ing sixteen Tornos DECO 2000s. Theseprecision machine tools demonstrate clear-ly just how versatile modern machiningcenters are, and just how much workingfreedom companies can now enjoy.

Innovative partner foundIt is a well known maxim that progressdoes not appear out of thin air – it alsocalls for entrepreneurs willing to embracechange and the right technology at theright moment. With the changeoverto MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X, JosefGanter Feinmechanik really got itsmoney’s worth in terms of potential forinnovation. All the improvements weredocumented and can also be translatedinto euros and cents.

We would be delighted to provide moreinformation on the new generation ofORTHO cutting oils and provide infor-mation on the potential for optimizationin your area of activity.

The special case of MonelThe company manufactures a sophisti-cated component from high-tensile Monel400 (a combination of 63% nickel, 28 –34% copper, < 2.5% iron and 2% man-ganese) for use in an endoscope. Thisnickel-copper alloy exhibits high tensilestrength and is very resistant to atmos-pheric corrosion, salt water and a widerange of acids and alkaline solutions.

The conventional cutting oil used previ-ously made this component very prone todiscoloring, and it therefore required asubsequent polishing operation. In con-trast, using MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X,the high-sheen surface finish was retainedduring and after machining. Through spe-cial additives and the resultant thermalsynergy benefits of ORTHO NF-X, it wasthen possible to dispense with the polish-ing process.

Clever tools for medical technologyThere is a tradition of innovation at JosefGanter. Over the last few years universalratchets and torque wrenches have beendeveloped for the medical technology sec-tor, especially for use in dental and ortho-dontic applications. These small ratchets,

andmuchmore.

Faster, more accurate andmore cost-effi-

cient production.With ORTHO NF-X as a

success factor, productivity has risen.

Searching for more performanceThe turning machine specialist fromDauchingen became interested in theMOTOREX vmax-Technology, with itscapacity for enhancing feed and cuttingspeeds and extending tool service life. For some time now, the machining pa-rameters of components manufactured invarious different production runs havebeen progressively raised. Up to a certainpoint, performance improvements of upto 60% have been achieved in operationssuch as turning, milling, boring and en-graving!

Positive results were also obtained withextended tool service lives. The tools arenow able to survive unmanned shiftswithout any problems. This greatlyboosted efficiency, and since thechangeover, damaged tools have effec-tively become a thing of the past. Highstandards of dimensional integrity andsurface quality were maintained.

“We offer what has to be the world’s mostcomprehensive range of items for themandrels sector”, states Roland Müller, the owner of the company. The companyalso produces a range of precision turnedcomponents with diameters of up to25 mm, predominantly for the medicaltechnology sector. Specialist operators useeighteen CNC automatic lathes with upto twelve axes to manufacture shortand extended production runs, and theycan also turn their hands to the productionof sample components.

Optimized productionToday, competition in the mandrels mar-ket is intense and global – with the in-evitable consequence of declining prices. The company was only able to maintainquality standards at competitive prices byintroducing an optimized productionprocess running on a 3-shift basis. When you talk to Roland Müller, youcan immediately sense his enthusiasm foreverything new.

Chain lubrication, a different approachIt’s hard to imagine farm equipment, manufacturing and trades without chains.Roller chains are widespread, but hollowpin chains, conveyor chains, side bowchains and the like also all require propermaintenance.

Proper and systematic lubricationThere are few chains that don’t requireregular lubrication. The type of chain, the load it is subjected to, where it is usedand its accessibility are all importantwhen performing maintenance. Readilyaccessible chains subject to even loads caneasily be lubricated manually in accor-dance with manufacturer’s recommenda-tions – with MOTOREX CHAIN-LUBE 622, for example. This syntheticchain lubricant is colorless and ideal forall chain types (X and O-ring tested). Its special formula prevents dirt (dust etc.)from accumulating on the chain andwater from seeping into the links. Itmeasurably reduces wear and extends thechain’s service life. CHAINLUBE 622 isavailable in several adhesion grades.

Penetrating and pressure resistantA lubricant must not only provide protec-tion from external influences such as water, dust, heat, etc., it must also reduce frictionwith a heavy-duty, shear-proof lubricantfilm and hydrodynamically separate thesurfaces. The latter property is especiallyimportant inside the chain. MOTOREXSUPERGLISS lubricants contain specialsurface-active agents that improve frictioncoefficients, penetrate quickly and adhereperfectly in a very short time.

Automated lubricationIf chain drives are inaccessible, fully auto-mated lubrication systems or lubricantdispensers may be used. These precise ap-plicators can apply lubricant with brushesor felt pads. They are reliable and applylubricant continually and naturally as thechain moves. Precise dosing keeps lubricantconsumption as low as possible, reducingoperating costs and protecting the environ-ment.

The BUCHER MOTOREX-Group’stechnical customer service specialists havefound solutions to countless chain lubrica-tion challenges. Your MOTOREX partnerwill be glad to help you with advice and theright product!

G+G Torino: la grande passione

Hard to miss: the G+G racing service

motor home is front-and-center at many

motorsport events.

The Italian racing fan first became awareof MOTOREX through the brand’s in-volvement in motocross. “Ho visto vinceretanti di quei campioni del mondo nel crosscon MOTOREX” (translated: “I’ve seenmany world motocross champions winwith MOTOREX”), says Tamiatto can-didly. And that’s where he got the businessidea of marketing MOTOREX productsfor bikes in Italy.

Knowing the industry well, the entre-preneur asked himself how he could getclose to his target market at reasonablecost. The answer was soon found: using amotor home equipped as a mobile racingservice center, Tamiatto and his employeeshave been present at the racetrack forthe past few years for several MX worldchampionship races and numerous nation-al off-road championships such as theKTM Trophies.

Tamiatto’s initiative has paid off for hisbusiness, as a growing number of racerstake advantage of his skilled services andadvice on lubrication topics.

Strong distributionToday no fewer than 18 salespeople travelall over Italy for G + G Torino. Theywork on their own account and are proudto sell high-quality Swiss productsthrough motorcycle dealers from Turin toPalermo. At G + G Torino they benefit

Nanni Tamiatto first entered the two-wheeler market over thirty years ago as adistributor of various motorcycle andscooter brands in northern Italy. Step bystep he added further product categories:clothing, helmets, spare parts, accessoriesand, not least, lubricants and care products– from MOTOREX of course.

from carefully thought-out logisticsarrangements with a central warehouseat a highly efficient freight forwarder’sfacility. Orders are usually ready to shipthe same day.

Rising tendencyThe market seems to appreciate G+GTorino’s initiative and enthusiasm.MOTOREX sales have grown every yearsince 2004. Says Tamiatto, “the product isthe first thing, it has to be absolutely com-pelling. Next is a top-notch sales structure, and having the lowest possible fixed costsis especially important in such a fiercelycontested market. But the most importantthing is a passion for motorcycles.Without that you’ve got nothing!” Thecompany owner knows where he’s goingand is convinced that the MOTOREXMOTO LINE has the right stuff to cap-ture a lot more territory in Italy…

On that note, we continue to wish G+GTorino and MOTOREX “tanta forza epassione” (much strength and passion)!

Did you know. . .Guide bushes, properly lubricated and calibrated to toler-ances of one in a hundred, are a crucial element in ensuringthe dimensional accuracy of manufactured parts. Even thetiniest variances can have a critical impact. MOTOREX pro-vided “guidance” in a synergy project with W. Dünner SA in

Moutier with its pioneering MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X cutting oil.

The process consistency figures for ceramic-surface guide busheswere extremely high. Ceramic presents no problems from a lubrica-tion perspective, but special temperature-stable high-pressure addi-tives are required due to the extreme temperature differences in theguide bushings. ORTHO NF-X achieved top marks in all categories.

. . . that high-tech guide bushes help to increase productivity?

MOTOREX takes to the terraces

For once the latest cool idea isn’t exactly about mobility, but ratherthe eye-catching MOTOREX advertising at La Maladière Stadiumin Neuchâtel. This state-of-the-art soccer stadium in Switzerlandwas dedicated in June 2007 and provides not only a home for the red-and-black XAMAX team, but also jobs for over 400 people with54 shops, 28,000 square meters of commercial space and a total of12,000 seats. Some of the electrical power and hot water consumedhere is produced on-site by 730 square meters of solar panels on thestadium rooftop. And in case things should get a little too hot inNeuchâtel’s soccer citadel, the crew of the basement fire station canswing into action at a moment’s notice.

The optically striking walkways up and down to the spectator seatsprovide a unique space for MOTOREX’s outdoor advertising. The ups and downs of XAMAX, on the other hand, are somethingthe team in red and black will have to deal with on its own.
