On Saturday 18 May, three students from Catmose College raised money to help a young man from the Eugomont Orphanage, Ghana. This orphanage was where 26 Catmose College students poured the floor of the new building over the Easter break. It was during this time that they met Henry, a young man of 20, who was a chaperone to the group. He was very helpful, teaching them about the area, people, culture and food. They learnt that Henry had a dream to finish school but he couldn’t afford to. After the Ghana trip, Henry’s story was shared with a year 7 English class and it inspired three boys, Cameron Kirk, Nicholas Swanton and Sam Wilkinson to help. Their love of cycling took off and after riding for about 26 miles around Rutland Water the boys raised nearly £200. They learnt about depth of field and also how to view an object in a more creative way. The students have worked hard and have taken some marvellous photographs. At the end of each session, students were asked to display their favourite photographs from that week on their screens for each other to view and admire.

The photography elective also involved two competitions, the first covering three topics: landscape, nature and close up. The students submitted their favourite pictures from the duration of the elective. The photographs were then selected by a panel of judges which included Principal, Mr Williams who is an avid photographer, New Technologies Manager, Mr Macdonald who is the former Marketing Manager for Practical Photography and Digital Photo magazines, as well as a skydiving free fall photographer, Miss Rawding who is the College photographer and was also one of the elective leaders and Mrs Ray a local artist and who also ran the course. The winners were given the choice of iTune vouchers or chocolates as a prize.

The second competition was a group competition and the topic was portraiture; students were given the opportunity to use lights to create shadows and effects in a small studio. The winners shared a box of chocolates between them as a prize.

All the photographs submitted were of a consistently high standard and each student should be very proud of what they have achieved.

Part of the award involves teaching others. My group included Rachel Alfieri, and Rebecca Potter and we decided to teach STOMP, which is a fun and basic activity. We asked our drama teacher Miss Gonda whether we could teach some of her Year 8 students, which she agreed to. The classes were done over three weeks with each of us taking turns in teaching a group. During the sessions we only did the simple ‘body stomp’ which is making up music with parts of your body, such as hands, feet, clapping clicking etc. We then produced our final performance, which was surprisingly good to the ear, especially as we only had one lesson to do it in. We were really proud of the outcome and given the chance, we would like to have the pleasure of teaching them again.

YOUNG ENTERPRISE

Former Catmose College students Danny McKay and Sam Oakley have launched an Android app as part of a Young Enterprise project.

Designed by Danny and programmed by Sam, the app called Type Hype, will be entered in to a national business competition.

Danny comments, “Type Hype is a game that tests how quickly you can type random words that appear on the screen – against the clock. To help us build our business case we need to reach a target of 100 downloads and currently we have 70”.

You can download their app via the link on our website.

CARA LEAROYD - MISS GREAT BRITAIN HEATS

Former student Cara Learoyd has recently got through to the finals of the Miss Great Britain, Leicester heat. As a finalist, Cara is raising money for her chosen charity Rainbows Childrens Hospice and would like to gather some support for this cause. She has already taken part in the Leicester Big 10K in aid of the charity and is hoping to do other fundraising. If you would like to help Cara raise funds for this very worthwhile charity you can do so by contacting her through her facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/514221075309166. The event involved 200 Olympic-class sailors and took place off the Wirral Peninsula at the West Kirby’s marine amphitheatre. The event involved 300 short, sharp frenzied races in three-boat teams with each team aiming to earn the coveted title: “Wilson Trophy Champion”.

Elysia who has been involved in sailing since she was a child is part of the crew for a six person team called the Rutland Raiders who are based at the Rutland Sailing Club. They regularly trained in preparation for the event amidst the beautiful surroundings of Rutland Water.

There were 34 teams that took part in the event which involved some of the best in the world. Rutland Raiders did very well and finished joint 19th and managed to beat a team made up of two British silver medalists from the 2012 London Olympics.

This term, the students within the S2R elective have been working towards their S2R Badges. Along with other students within the College who undertake sports reports in their time, we now have 9 reporters who have achieved their Bronze Journalism badges; these are Thomas Ameer-Beg, Callum Smith, Caitlyn Palmer, Talek Semmens, Jamie Robertson, Louie Miles, Thomas Gregory, Aaron Miller, and Sam Haynes. Thomas Ameer-Beg and Callum Smith have also achieved their Silver Journalism badges. During term 6, the Media team will be involved in reporting from various sports events which will enable them to work to a brief and also work towards the Coach and Producer badges. As well as working through the badges programme, the students have also looked at the Legacy of 2012 and its effects on School sports. Their reports will be sent onto the Education Select Committee in Parliament shortly but you can see their thoughts and discussions and interviews on these webpages - http://bit.ly/12Prk56 and http://bit.ly/10ViijP

On the morning of Saturday 18 May, Mr Barlow, accompanied by 7 Catmose College students went down to the Farmers Market on Gaol Street in Oakham to perform a variety of pieces to the passing shoppers. These included: solos by Nirvana Allis, Georgina Harries and myself, a trio performance of ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ by Georgina Harries and myself with Spencer Green on guitar, some old classics on the ukulele by Mia Lynch and her Dad, and a flute performance by Eleanor Firth and Olivia Tinkler. It was well received and Oakham Town Partnership sent their thanks, showing interest in us performing again sometime in the future.

ATHLETICS WINNERS. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .On Tuesday 15 May we had our annual triangular fixture against Uppingham Community College and Casterton Business and Enterprise College for the Livingstone Athletics Cup. Sixty-one students took part in the event and nine sports leaders accompanied them to help deliver the activities. Last year we were in the lead at lunchtime but were unfortunate to lose by only a few points to Uppingham. This year, however, we were even more determined and focused on winning and were reasonably confident that we had our strongest team.

The students knew they were there to not only perform to their best ability but to support their team mates and captains, to ensure that everyone attended their event. The year nine students produced some excellent results and although it was certainly a team effort, a special mention should go to Jack Astill who threw a personal best in the discus and finished either first or second in his five events.

In the girls, Chelsea Lucas had two firsts in the 100m and 1500m. Overall the boys were first with 107 points and the girls second with 73 points. In the year 8 age group we finished first and second but the scores were extremely close. The boys came second by 2 points and that included an event where one team mate was missing, if we had come fourth in that particular event we would have won this age group. Daniel Cousens had two firsts, a second and third place and Tom Dryell two firsts. The girls were equal first with Casterton but special mention goes to Jess Curtis who had two firsts and Amy Saville who had a first and a third place result. The year 7 girls came first and the boys second. Tabitha Woolhouse had four firsts, Jessica Guy two firsts and a second position but overall the team finished in the top four in nearly all of their events. Ben Higgins had three seconds and Sam Wilkinson had an excellent run in the 1500m, finishing first. Overall the team came first by 63 points, winning the trophy back after a long absence from our cabinet.

Although I have mentioned a few students, I cannot stress enough that this was definitely a team win and everyone who took part should be very proud of themselves. Looking at the results, we can still strengthen our team further for next year’s competition and hopefully more training leading up to the day will give us a real chance to keep the trophy. Congratulations to the following students who have been selected to represent Rutland at the County Athletics on 8 June at Saffron Lane, Leicester. Charlie Dalby, Ben Buckby, Ben Higgins, Sam Wilkinson, Tabitha Woolhouse, Alice Lucas, Emily Broughton, Holly Imison, Georgia Whittemore, Eve Orton, Jessica Guy, Jack Astill, Dougie Hempkin, Rory Madelin, Jamie Maxwell, Chelsea Lucas, Charlotte Cramphorn, Jessica Curtis, Josh Limbrick, Harry Wiles-Bull, Ashley Chamberlain, Will Durno and Charlotte Bell.

Five schools took part, involving ninety primary children. All leaders attended a course on table officiating and refereeing to prepare them to deliver the event successfully. Jordon Williams, Will Durno and Charlie Watt umpired the small court games whilst Amy Burditt, Davina Patel, Sophia Frost and Jenna-Marie Charlton recorded the scores and fouls. The afternoon was a great success with all students enjoying their first experience of a basketball competition. The winners were Bringhurst with St Mary’s and St John runners up.

Many thanks for the support of the leaders.Mrs Powell
