Principal’s Message
Earth Hour falls on the calendar this Saturday. It’s a global initiative that started back
in 2007 with the aim of saving power and drawing attention to the impact that
climate change is having on our Earth. The idea is really simple – everyone is
encouraged to switch off as many appliances, lights etc. as possible at 8:30pm on
Saturday night in an effort to save power for one hour. Because schools have a role
to play in educating children about a range of global issues, we will be holding our
own Earth Hour on Friday afternoon. The concept will be the same, we will switch
off as many lights and appliances as we can for one hour and the teachers will use
alternative activities that don’t involve Smartboards, computers and so forth. Can I
encourage all school families to consider participating in the 10th annual global Earth
Hour this Saturday. I always enjoy the stories that the students share the following
Monday after Earth Hour as to the fun activities that some families get up to. If
you’d like more information about Earth Hour, visit www.earthhour.org.au
Over the past 2 weeks, I’ve been contacted by a couple of parents once again
concerned about how some families are mis-using the 5 minute pick-up zone in
Third Street. Most of the problems appear to be happening in the afternoon pick-up
and include: parents parking in this zone and getting out of their cars to go and
collect their children; people not moving along as far as they can to allow others to
move in behind; people staying in the zone longer than the 5 minute limit rather
than circling the block until their children arrive. As I’ve shared with you before, our
school does not have the volume of traffic that meets the threshold for a pedestrian
crossing attendant or a ‘Kiss and Ride’ zone. We were very fortunate to have
council’s support in installing this 5 minute pick-up area, but it can only be efficient
and effective as the people using it. I appeal to all families to use this zone in the
way it is designed to be used. The consideration that we show one another in things
like this, goes a long way to us staying a happy and harmonious community.
Finally, I have a number of commitments this week that will take me outside of the
school, especially on Wednesday and Thursday. If you need assistance at the
leadership level, please ask to speak with Mrs Stallard, Mr Carlin or Mrs Merchant in
my absence.
Have a good week.

Mosquitos
The recent rain has caused an increase in mosquito activity. We encourage students to pack a roll on insect
repellent (not aerosol) in their bag and apply it at recess and lunch to avoid some unwanted bites and itching.
Disco
There were many happy faces but hot and sweaty Cardiff South kids after an enjoyable school disco last
Thursday night. Congratulations to all of the students involved for their great behaviour. Our students were
certainly showing our school values, especially RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY on the night.
Special thanks to the Year 6 assistants. Their help showing the infants students what to do and encouraging
involvement in dances and games was much appreciated. Thank you also to Ms Singh, Ms Murray, Mrs Ison, Mrs
Winterbine, Ms Glawson, Mr Jardine and Mrs Gallagher for supervising on the night.
Canteen Menu
P&C wish to advise all families that there will be a slight price rise to a number of items on the Canteen Menu
for the start of Term 2. Raising the price of canteen items is always a last resort, but as producers and our
suppliers raise their costs it becomes necessary to raise our prices a little to ensure we are adequetely covering
our costs. The canteen committee have limited this as much as possible. The new menu with updated prices will
be available on the school website, the Skoolbag app and accessible within the online canteen ordering system
by the end of Term 1. Please ensure that you review the new price list prior to placing orders next term.
Earth Hour
Earth Hour begins 8.30pm on Saturday 25th March. This is when we are asked to not use devices like computers
TV’s and lights. By ‘switching off’ for one hour we are showing our support towards initiatives to reduce global
warming whilst getting people to talk about how we can reduce our environmental footprint. During ‘Earth
Hour’ you may wish to hold a candle-light dinner, play board games, charades or camp outside and use torches.
I am sure the whole family will have fun while supporting a world-wide campaign. Now is the time to start
planning what you will do to support Earth Hour.
PLP meetings at Yamuloong
Parents and carers of our Aboriginal students are reminded of the PLP meetings scheduled for this evening at
Yamuloong. The evening runs between 5:00-7:00pm and will include dinner catered by the wonderful staff at
Yamuloong. If you have not been to Yamuloong before, the address is: 71 Prospect Rd, Garden Suburb. We look
forward to seeing you then. Please bring your children as their views and input into the PLPs are important too.

Cardiff High Orientation Day
English Class
On Wednesday the 8th of March the Year 6 classes went to Cardiff High Orientation Day. When we got there, we
got name tags that had what classes we would be attending for each session of the day. Our first and one of our
favourite classes was English. Mrs Carvarreta was the teacher’s name; we had to write a poem on a
marshmallow. The teacher told us to use our five senses which are touch, smell, sound, taste and sight. First the
teacher showed us how to make a tiny little book to write our poem in. At the end of the session, we got to use
the taste sense and eat the marshmallow! It was great fun and at the end of the day we got to have a sausage
sizzle and a drink. After we ate our sausage sandwich, the year 9 and 10 music groups played us 2 great songs
that everybody enjoyed. Thank you Cardiff high for a great day!

Maths Class
Maths was another subject that we got to try at Orientation Day. The maths teacher, Mr Da Beer, got us to say
all of our 11 times tables and then he told us we could do 11x45. He taught us an easy way to multiply this
number. He said what’s 4+5 its 9 then he said to put the 9 in the middle of 4 and 5 and that was the answer and
to check this we used a calculator and it was right! At the end of the maths lesson we did 11x123456789 and
that equalled 1358024679. At the end of the day we had a sausage sizzle and everybody including the other
schools had a great day. It was really good to meet some old friends from other schools and some new ones
too!
Thankyou Cardiff High for a great day!

Sport Class
In sport class we did trampolining and somersaults on the rolling mats. Our teacher was Mr Swadling who is the
school’s sport instructor. There were two trampolines, one was a mini-tramp and was pretty basic but the other
one was a double tramp. After jumping we had to land on the front side then let the force of the trampoline
push you to the top part. The force of the springs moved us forward for us to land on the mat. There were mats
on the floor that we could do forward rolls, cartwheels, somersaults and handstands on. It was heaps of fun and
we can’t wait to go to high school because then we’ll learn how to do terrific trampoline tricks!
Thanks Cardiff High for a super day!

Cross Country
The annual school cross country carnival will be held next Thursday, 30th
March on school grounds. Students will have an early recess from 10:30-
11:00 and the carnival will hopefully be underway by 11:15. Students are
to wear sport uniforms and joggers to school and it would be a good idea
to bring extra water on the day. ALL students will be seated with their class
for the duration of the carnival and will not be able to move back and forth
between their parents and class mates. Students are also reminded to
make sure they have their asthma puffers with them during the race.
Parents are invited to attend the carnival. We ask that you arrive by
11:00am and seat yourselves on the infants grass area. Please don’t sign in
at the office, but you will be asked to complete a sign on register while
watching the races. This will be brought around by the school captains
during the races. Thanks for your support and fingers crossed for perfect
weather next week!
Harmony Day Report
Students in K-6 had a wonderful day undertaking a variety of activities with
a focus on ‘Everyone Belongs’. Students participated in games and sports,
created visual class displays, sang songs, undertook art and craft activities
and enjoyed working with different staff from across the school. It was
lovely to see the support from the students and community who wore a
splash of orange to show their respect and dedication to creating
harmonious communities. A few photos are below of some of the work
created on the day.
