On 1st July 2010 Anglo European School was honoured to receive a visit from Mme Xu Lin, Director

General of Hanban, together with a delegation including Mr Wang Feng, European Confucius

Institute Coordinator, Prof. Zhang Guoyou the Vice President of Peking University, Prof Kang Jian,

former principal Peking University High School Jenny Jupe, Strategic Director of SSAT and Katharine

Carruthers, SSAT Confucius Institute Director.

The aim of the visit was to find out about the work of the SSAT Essex Confucius Institute. Mme Xu Lin

met students from Year 10 who are studying Chinese and was able to witness first-hand the impact

Hanban support is having on Essex Schools by attending the final session of the “Embedding Chinese

Culture” Conference. We are very grateful for the continuing support of Hanban in our efforts to

promote Chinese language and culture.

From 14th to 27th July 2010 nine Year 10 pupils from the Anglo European School participated in the

SSAT/Hanban Summer Camp.

The trip involved a cultural visit to Beijing and an exchange programme with Chongqing No.1

Secondary School in western China.

Our pupils visited many of Beijing’s famous

sites such as the Forbidden Palace, The

Summer Palace, Tian An Men Square and the

Great Wall. In Chongqing, our pupils had an

opportunity to experience local Chinese life

and exchange ideas with their Chinese

partners. At the Closing Ceremony in

Chongqing Anglo students delivered an

excellent music performance which was truly

enjoyed by the Chinese partner school and

students.

Beijing Opera Visits Stewards School On Monday 14th February 2011, the London Beijing Opera Company was invited into Stewards

School to work with Year 7 pupils. The purpose of the day was to allow year 7 pupils to develop a

greater understanding, knowledge and appreciation of Chinese culture. Year 7 gathered in the

school hall for period 1 to watch a demonstration of traditional Chinese opera given by Mrs Kathy

Hall. She talked about the history and traditions of Chinese opera. She demonstrated how Chinese

performers use their voices and Year 7 also participated! Mrs Hall then performed a series of songs

from Chinese opera.

Following the demonstration, all Year 7 classes where then given the opportunity to work in one

hour long workshops with two specialist Chinese artist, Ms Hall and Mr Li. Ms Hall showed four year

7 classes how to do Chinese brush painting and Mr Li showed four Year 7 classes how to do Chinese

calligraphy using traditional writing brushes.

Each class was given time to practice how to

use traditional Chinese brushes and art paper.

With more input from Ms Hall and Mr Li, pupils

were then able to complete their own work.

Pupils in the brush paint workshop with Ms

Hall completed some beautiful pictures of

birds and other animals, Pupils with Mr Li

produced Chinese New Year messages. All

pupils worked very hard to produce some very

pleasing and good work. Mr Hickman –

‘Learning how to speak some Chinese

was really fun’

On Wednesday 29th December 2010, thirteen members of our group met for a “Chinese Friends”

get together in Doddinghurst. This is where the older FLICA members get together for crafts and

activities during the school holidays.

The day was organized by Sue Child and her daughter Bethan. In the morning we had a choice of

knitting, crochet, sewing and card making. It was amazing to see the entire group, and some mums,

get so involved in their activity. We had to drag them away at 12:30 for lunch.

After lunch we had the pleasure of welcoming Zhong Wang, and Lili Sun from the Anglo European

School, which has a centre linked to Jiangsu near Shanghi. The teachers are sponsored by the

Chinese Government to come over and teach school children in schools.

The older children did calligraphy with Mrs Sun and the younger ones did origami and some basic

Chinese with Zhong. We all had a great day.

As a Confucius Classroom, our role is to encourage enthusiasm for Chinese Language and Culture.

One way of doing this is by working with our Spoke Schools providing language and culture classes.

Another way is to put on a magical performance to entertain and inspire students.

So far the SSAT Essex Confucius Classroom has supported Lion Dance Performances at the following

Spoke Schools, allowing every single student in these schools to see how exciting Chinese Culture

can be.

Window on China On 24th June, 2010, for the third year running, the Anglo European School ran the ‘Window on China’

day, aimed at introducing Chinese Language and Culture to gifted and talented linguists in Year 7. 60

students from nine local secondary schools took part.

Students took part in Mandarin lessons and hear first hand from Chinese teachers about life in

primary and secondary schools in

China. They participated in

interactive workshops, including

calligraphy, paper-folding and Tai

Chi. At break-time they sampled

Chinese tea and assorted snacks.

They took part in a Chinese quiz and

were happy to win prizes. Everyone

agreed that it had been an

interesting and enjoyable day. “The

best thing was the paper folding and

learning more about China”

On Monday 31st January 2011, 28 Year 8 pupils from Stewards who are studying Mandarin and Art,

enjoyed a Chinese Cultural Visit to the British Museum Chinese Galleries, followed by a trip to the

vibrant Chinatown district in Central London. Preparations for the Chinese New Year Celebrations

this week are in full swing and pupils were able to enjoy the colourful atmosphere. After a

fascinating lecture at the Museum led by James Trapp, a Chinese Art Historian; pupils thoroughly

enjoyed looking at the many beautiful works of art in the galleries with a new insight into their

significance.

The Museum trip was followed by a

delicious Chinese meal at the New

World Restaurant, before a short

shopping trip. Some pupils practised

their Mandarin and bought Chinese

cultural items that they have learnt

about at school. Stewards pupils will

be celebrating the Chinese New Year,

which begins on Thursday, over the

next fortnight with a wide range of

activities. Year 7 pupils have learnt a

song which they will sing in Mandarin,

others have made a dragon. Year 8

pupil, Thomas said, "I don't want the

day to end. It has been so good."

We had a great day yesterday. Thanks for the suggestion of the New World Restaurant.

Chinese Calligraphy

On the 3rd February 2011 Passmores School hosted a Lion Dance for Chinese New year.

First of all was the introduction; The UK South Region Wing Chun Association explained who they

were and why they were here. Suddenly big drums appeared with colourful flowers wrapped round

them. The men quickly ran to their instruments and started playing a loud, beating tune.

Then we saw the lion! I got really scared when the Lion appeared. The lion was black and red; it had

a big head with red lights as its eyes, it had lots of fur and sequins on it too. His eyes looked evil, but

red is a lucky colour in China.

The lion started falling asleep; Kwok Cheung said to us “Shall we wake him up?” “Yes!” we all

cheered while throwing our hands in the air. After that he started playing the drums, making the

floor vibrate and yet again the lion awoke.

It dragged people out of the crowd and then swallowed them whole – we all laughed. But the

funniest point for me was when the lion took my friends bags. But then he threw it back!

Suddenly the lion leaped up and the man inside sprayed blue, sticky silly string everywhere.

Everyone scrambled around for it, but there wasn’t enough for everyone, sadly!!

Everyone had a great time watching the lion pound and pounce everywhere giving us luck and

wishing us a very happy Chinese New Year!

On 3rd February 2011, thirty 10-13 year-old girls, members of the 1st Ingatestone Girl Guides met to

celebrate Chinese New Year’s Eve. They were lead by Hanban teachers, Sun Lili and Pan Xiaoyu from

the Anglo European School for an evening of Chinese calligraphy, Tai Chi and Chinese dumpling

making to celebrate Chinese Spring Festival.

The evening was organised by the Guide Leader, Beryl Scott Rous who also teaches at the Anglo-

European School. The girls had a wonderful evening learning about Chinese culture and doing such

fun activities. All the Guides and leaders would like to say a big thank you to Sun Lili and Pan Xiaoyu

for giving up their time and preparing the activities.

Xue Xinran Visits Anglo European On 6th May 2010 the well-known British/Chinese journalist and author Xue Xinran, writer of “The

Good Women of China” and founder of the organisation “The Mothers’ Bridge of Love” which, aims

to support adopted Chinese children and their parents, visited the Anglo European at the invitation

of Mr Barrs.

After being welcomed by Mr Barrs and Mrs Martin Xinran hosted a book club session in the library

and over lunch met COSMOS students and Chinese learners. She finished the day by giving a

fascinating talk about her life at the Year 11 Leavers’ Assembly.

Lower Sixth Form student Elsa Brittain, a big follower of Xinran’s work said “This was a great

opportunity to meet Xinran, who is one of my favourite authors. It was fascinating to hear about her

life”.

Year 9 Students’ Visit China Town On December 10th 2010, just before the Christmas break, 19 Year 9 students in their first year of

Mandarin went to London for the day with Ms Garner. We visited the British museum to look at

some ancient Chinese artifacts and then ended the day with a meal in China town including time to

have a look around China town. We had a fantastic day despite getting a little lost for directions

along the way!

At the British museum we all had to split up into small groups. We were given a worksheet to fill out;

we had to write about the story behind a piece of art that we chose. (We also had to talk about the

art). It was really interesting; however lunch was probably the favorite part of the day. The meal was

delicious and we had great entertainment, we all

tried to eat with chopsticks for the first time.

Afterwards we went off looking around the market

and what seemed to be the most popular with all

of us were the Chinese sweets. All in all we had an

unforgettable day, and we are all thrilled we chose

Mandarin as our third language.

London Jing Kun Opera Association To celebrate the end of the Chinese New Year at Passmores School in Harlow, workshops from the

London Jing Kun Opera Association visited the School on Friday 18th February. All Year 7 pupils were

off timetable for the day.

They learnt various crafts activities including calligraphy, brush painting and fan and water sleeves.

The Hanban teacher at Passmores, Dai Xu, led 3 one hour sessions, where she taught pupils all about

Chinese Language, Culture, Tai Chi, and lantern making.

Shicun Chen, a Hanban teacher from Lambeth Academy in London delivered three one hour sessions

Chinese Teaching at the Anglo European

The Anglo European has a well-established Chinese department which has been running now for five

years. The school offers qualifications in Asset Languages, GCSE and IB examinations and take-up has

grown steadily over the years. One former student, Ian Sigmund, is now studying at the Chinese

University in Hong Kong having successfully gained a scholarship.

Recognition of our achievements in this area came recently in a request from SSAT to come and film

a lesson as part of a promotional DVD for the SSAT Confucius Institute. (The DVD can be watched

at: https://www.ssatrust.org.uk/teachingandlearning/networks/chinese/Pages/home.aspx) A film

crew visited the school on 11 November, 2010 to film a Year 10 Chinese class. The crew also

interviewed Ms Garner, AST for Mandarin, who talked about the teaching materials she uses and the

impact being a Confucius Classroom has had on Chinese teaching in the school.

Yellow Earth Theatre Visit Stewards On the 19th and 20th January, the Yellow Earth Theatre group visited Stewards School to work with all

our Year 8 pupils. The Yellow Earth Theatre is a London based company that specialise in promoting

Chinese culture in schools and community based projects. They introduced our Year 8 pupils to

traditional shadow puppet theatre which is a popular form of traditional theatre originating in China.

Pupils enjoyed a one hour workshop working with specialist Chinese artist and workshop leader Dr.

Tsai –Wei Chen. She introduced the workshops by giving a demonstration of the story of the “Two

suns” using puppets to introduce the story of ancient people who were tormented by two suns. The

ancient people sought the help of three wise men and three warriors to end their torment by

destroying one of the suns.

After the story, our pupils received a brief demonstration on how to make shadow puppets and then

had 30 minutes working in pairs to use their

imaginative and creative skills to make shadow puppets

based upon animals in the Chinese zodiac.

Once complete, pupils gave demonstration of their

puppets to the rest of the class. Pupils greatly enjoyed

the workshops and showed impressive enthusiasm and

commitment to making the workshops a memorable

days for all involved. Pupils comments included “I really

enjoyed making something that I had never heard of”

and another pupil commented “I liked drawing and

making our own puppets, the puppet show was really

good!”

Globex 2010 For the third year running China has been one of the countries looked at in our “Global Experience”

Week for Year 9. In mid June, while their classmates were in Germany and Spain, 70 year 9 students

took part in two days of activities.

Students tested their musical skills by writing the soundtrack to a clip from a Chinese film. In Art they

decorated fans with traditional designs. The students were really excited to learn the basics of Wing

Chun martial arts taught by the Southend Wing Chun Association and competition was intense in the

Anglo Year 9 table tennis tournament. In cooking, students enjoyed making (and eating) spring rolls

and fortune cookies.

Shen Gaofeng and Sun Lili taught paper

folding skills and some basic Chinese.

Comment from member of staff:

“Great experience – To see different

students in different environments.

Students took responsibility for all their

competitions and all participated well.”

Changhe High School Students Visit Anglo European School

From 6th July to 12th July 2010 twenty students from Changhe High School in Hangzhou,

accompanied by two teachers, Mr Xiaofei Wang and Ms Aiying Wu, visited the Anglo European. This

was our first chance to host students from one of our Chinese partner schools.

The students were hosted by Anglo Students and had a fabulous time. They took part in some

specially organised English, Science, History and Philosophy lessons classes. They observed the Year

10 Model United Nations Event, visited Colchester Castle and taught Year 8 some Chinese sports

while learning for themselves some

English ones.

The highlight of their stay was the

Anglo-Chinese Concert where we were

treated to Chinese-style flamenco

dancing, Tai Chi and a fashion show.

Many thanks to the School Association

for providing a tasty international

buffet.

Yellow Earth Theatre Day Anglo

European

I really did enjoy the Yellow Earth Theatre day and I learnt lots about Chinese culture and leisure.

The day was very informative and I felt that the more effort I put in, the more enjoyment I got out of

the activities.

I enjoyed all of the different art forms but I specifically

enjoyed the dance and music workshops. Both of these were

interesting and I found the music workshop really fun as I got

to experience new and exciting instruments, which the

eastern side of society has not yet experienced. I fell really

lucky to have taken part in the day.

I also had fun ribbon dancing, I always like to watch people

dance with pretty coloured ribbons and in the dance

workshop I learnt to do just that!

Overall, I had a great time learning about China and it’s

different art form. I would definitely volunteer to do it all

again.
