In 2008, Zhejiang University became the first university in China to
grant a master’s degree in China Studies that, for the last decade, has
graduated more than 460 students from 53 countries as Masters of
China Studies. The MCS was based on the idea on offering education to
foreign students that could specialize themselves in China while
residing in China. The success of this MA-program later prompted the
other highest-ranking universities in China to follow suit in graduating
foreigners specialized in China.
Zhejiang University’s MCS program is now an integrated part of the
College of Liberal Arts & Sciences that also offers the undergraduate
program, Philosophy, Mathematics & Economics (PME). The MCS and
PME programs operate closely with the Program in Innovation
Entrepreneurship & Global Leadership (PIEGL) from Zhejiang
University’s School of Management. To create a better learning
environment, staff and students, from these three programs, are
highly engaged with each other in social and academic activities.

ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY
Founded in 1897, Zhejiang University has remained one of China’s top 5
best universities for more than a decade. Formerly known, as Qiushi
Academy, Zhejiang University is one of the most ancient renowned
institutions of higher learning in the country. Its success is a result of
maintaining an eminent academic level within a wide range of
discipline from our 7 established faculties with 32 schools. More than
47,000 students attend Zhejiang University each year, which boasts 7
campuses with each of their own uniqueness, namely: Zijingang,
Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Zhijiang, Zhoushan, and Haining International
Campus.
Home of the MCS program, Haining International Campus opened its
doors for its first students in September 2016, from undergraduate
students to doctoral students. The campus is located in East Haining,
125km west of the metropolis, Shanghai, and 61km east of Hangzhou,
capital city of Zhejiang province. In the south of the campus lies the
pleasant Juanhu Lake, and to the north students can find a wetland
park. The campus covers 200 acres with a center lake surrounded by
green trees. It is a very sustainable garden campus and a compact
campus with an axis running from the academic quad, through the
auditorium and the center lake giving a tranquil atmosphere for
students and teachers, staff, and visitors.
Here at the International Campus, we cooperate with the world’s top
institutions of higher learning in joint-colleges, to further the
development of China’s relationship with other foreign countries. The
design of the International Campus is based on neoclassicism that
absorbs from European style architecture, while also retaining old
Chinese architectural elements. The blend of east and west, classic and
modern is to represent the values of cooperation in a globalized world:
diversity, harmony, creativity, progression, and internationalization.
ABOUTZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY

strategies, and promote mutual understanding. A Master’s Degree in
China Studies, from Zhejiang University, is a gateway to students, who
want to further their career in China either through professional work
or academia by providing some of the following key competencies
expected from a China expert:

reading and writing.
Conducting scientific research in modern China effectively that can
be presented through various communication channels.
Understand and analyze both the underlying trends and complex of
China’s development through research methods and strategies.

of teaching experience both in- and outside of China, capable of
providing students with vast and extensive knowledge on China. This
full-English degree program offers students, with different academic
backgrounds, the possibility to individualize their education by
keeping a wide range of selective courses open. Students also receive
research and practicum experience through internship opportunities
and field trips. The combination of classes, lectures, and out in-the-
field experience provides students with all the necessary skills to

Francesco Silvestri, 2013 China Studies graduate,PHD in Politics, Sant’Anna School of Advanced
Studies, Pisa, Italy; Acting Director for China,
TOChina Hub Postdoc in Comparative Public
Policy, University of Turin
I believe the MCS Program is a unique opportunity for any young scholar
interested in a firsthand academic experience in China. The courses offered
make a well-balanced blend of disciplines that conveys a comprehensive,
yet detailed, picture of China’s civilization, institutions and economy.
Regular fieldwork activities supplement classroom hours, allowing for a
more intimate understanding of Chinese society and provides a “human
contact” that is really the plus of this program.
Joerg Hoefer, 2016 China Studies graduate, now
works for the automobile company, Volkswagen. To
gain a much deeper understanding of China, he
traveled 5800km through the country on bike.
CCTV, Xinhua News, People’s Daily, covered and
reported his journey. Jorg is, currently, preparing
his book: “The Story of My Ride and The Chinese
Dream”
The MCS program has provided me with an invaluable multifaceted learning
experience in an incredibly dynamic environment. The program provides
numerous opportunities to explore China in- and out of the classroom by
organizing field trips that allow us to experience what we've been
studying. My favorite trip was for a class called "In the Process of
Modernization: Local Society in Modern China", where we discussed
different aspects of how rapid development has effected smaller cities and
towns across China.
Janus Hjorth, Danish student on the MCS
program, has a strong passion for Chinese
culture. Especially Shaolin kung fu, which he has
been studying for more than 7 years. He enrolled
on the MCS program at the Haining International
Campus in March 2017.
I chose to study China Studies at Zhejiang University to strengthen my
connection with China and further my research and understanding on
China’s culture and Chinese martial arts. Not only do I gain comprehensive
knowledge on China, but I’m also getting more integrated with being in
direct contact with the Chinese society.
During my two years studies on the MCS program, I had the unique
opportunity to meet brilliant people with many different cultural
backgrounds but one thing in common - the enthusiasm for China. While
the inter-disciplinary curriculum is focused on providing an understanding
of China's history, culture, economics and language, the MCS program
supports you in exploring China first-hand and directly apply what you have
learned e.g. during my research project leading through whole China.
Marian Slocum, 2016 China Studies graduate, is
now continuing her studies in the U.S. She was
strict and conscientious during her studies, and
was always keen on participating in all types of
activities. Her dedication to her studies and
extracurricular activities earned her the title “
Excellent International Student of Zhejiang
University”.
