“Take No Pleasure: The Analysis of Masochism andTraumatic Memory in a Phobic Adolescent"
Presenter: Martin Bullard, M.S.W. (Seattle, WA)Discussant: Rex McGehee, M.D. (Denver, CO)
9:00 - 9:15 Welcome and Introduction9:15- 12:10 Program (with break, 10:35-10:45)
Opening the conference, Martin Bullard presents the ongoing analytic treatment of a
depressed, masochistic, and treatment-resistant patient in late adolescence who had
suffered traumatic losses in infancy and early adolescence. The young man had experienced
developmental difficulties throughout childhood and earlier treatment attempts had failed.
Martin will describe the frame modifications he believes were necessary to engage his
patient and to sustain the treatment in the face of sadomasochistic resistance. The
presentation invites us, among other things, to consider how earlier unworked trauma can
derail individuation in late adolescence; how experiential contact with the experience of loss
and early trauma via the transference can be mutative; and how it may be necessary to
adapt the frame when working with a highly resistant adolescent.
There will be an audience discussion after the discussant’s response.

“Can There Be Meaning in Repetitive, Restrictive, EvenStereotypic Behaviors? Evidence of Transmission of
Intergenerational Trauma in the Psychoanalytic Treatmentof a 3 Year Old Boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder”
Paper by: Susan Donner, M.D. (Los Angeles, CA)Discussant: Mirta B. Oelsner, PsyA. FIPA (Seattle, WA)
9:00- 9:10 Introduction9:15-11:45 Program (with break, 10:35-10:45)
In her paper, Susan Donner explores her analytic work with a young boy, previously diagnosed
with Autism Spectrum Disorder, who entered treatment with little language at the age of 3, and
was thought to lack the capacity for symbolic play. During the course of her innovative treatment
of the boy - which was conducted importantly, in conjunction with each of his parents - his
restricted and stereotypic behaviors, which she understood and gradually enabled his parents to
understand as having meaning, underwent a dramatic change. Susan illustrates how the inter-
generational transmission of trauma in the family, combined with the child’s constitutional
attributes predisposing him to atypicality, intensified his disturbed and seemingly meaningless
behavior. Drawing on the work of Susan Sherkow, Frances Tustin, Maria Rhode and Joshua
Durban, she explores the defensive nature of his behavior, as well as its symbolism. She also
emphasizes the significance of her modified analytic model - in helping the parents work through
unconsciously transmitted trauma of their own, such that they were able to facilitate his
continued development as treatment came to a close.
11: 45- 11:55 Break11:55- 1:00 Panel discussion, audience questions and discussion, wrap of of conference.
During the panel Martin Bullard, Rex McGehee, Susan Donner and Mirta Oelsner will discuss the
case presentation and the paper, examining the commonalities of the two cases, similarities in
the entrenched symptom pictures, meaning-finding in the analytic process with children and
adolescents who have been traumatized, and innovations in the frame and technique
necessitated by analytic work where development has been derailed.
