Hmmmm… What is Psychoanalytic Psychology?
Psychoanalysis was created by Sigmund Freud in 1916. He believed that human behavior is caused by unconscious drive. He thought that by bringing these to the surface, one could cure depression and anxiety.Conscious Mind
Unconscious Mind
Some History! Freud began his research around 1885 ,
by using hypnosis in his clinical work. His patient that he was treating for a severe cough and partial paralysis was invited to talk while under hypnosis. Symptoms became reduced in severity as she retrieved memories of early traumatic incidents in her life. He began using the term “Psychoanalysis” to describe his practice in 1896.

Sigmund Freud Sigmund Freud was an Austrian born in
1856. He began his career in medicine in 1882 after getting his MD. After experimenting with hypnosis throughout the 1890s, he developed the theory of Psychoanalysis in 1896, perfecting it in 1916. Because of his heavy smoking, he developed a cancerous growth in his mouth, resulting in his death in 1939.
FUN FACT!!! Much of his early psychoanalysis theory
is thought to be a byproduct of heavy cocaine use, which he eventually quit using in 1906.
Therapy In therapy, the patient lies on the couch
and talk about dreams and childhood memories. The therapist uses several techniques such as Rorschach ink blots and free association to gain insight into their behavior and the meaning behind the patient’s symptoms
Rorschach Ink Blots The ink blots have an ambiguous
meaning, which means that different people will see different things in it depending on their unconscious thoughts. It has been criticized by behaviorists like B.F Skinner as being subjective.
Free Association Free Association is where the therapist
reads a list of words and the patient says the first thing that comes to mind. It is hoped that fragments of repressed memories will emerge during this.
