When I dont know. How can I help?IntroductionsPrincipal Everett WarrenMath Specialist Derek BeetFCPS Consultant Nick DiazTopics for the nightWhy is Math Important?Common CoreHow can you help your child at home?ResourcesImportance of MathPresentation by Nick DiazCommon Core Mathematics StandardsFrederick County Public SchoolsThis presentation may be used with parents of children in middle and high school to provide general information about Common Core mathematics and some specifics about course sequences in Frederick County.5Common Core MathematicsThere are Common Core mathematics standards starting in Pre-Kindergarten and going all the way to Algebra 2.Common Core mathematics standards will help to prepare students for both college and careers after high school.

We have mathematics courses beyond Algebra 2, but the Common Core standards only go up to Algebra 2.6Whats the same and whats different?SAME The Common Core standards teach the same mathematics content that we currently teach.DIFFERENT Some mathematics topics will be taught in earlier grades. For instance, dividing fractions by fractions will be taught in 6th grade instead of 7th grade. Also, much of the content in our current Algebra 1 course will be taught prior to the Common Core Algebra 1 course. Also some new standards will emphasize student understanding over procedural knowledge; but (again) this is NOT new math content.

Common Core BasicsPeter Cincotta, the FCPS Curriculum Specialist for Secondary Mathematics, goes over the basics of Common Core and how it will better prepare students for life after high school.
