  • Message from the Dean

As in the past, this year’s Community Awards Banquet is an occasion to say thank you—thank you for the partnerships that Augustana has with our community and for the generous support that our students receive from community donors. Your engagement and your commitment to helping us educate the next generation of young leaders continue to inspire me. I am both humbled and grateful.

A year ago I wrote about a new vision for Augustana—a “Pathways” program that would help connect third or fourth-year students from rural and Aboriginal communities back to their hometowns or similar places by engaging them in needed research projects with community partners and with the assistance of faculty mentors. Our dream is to help students see that they can make a real difference and to help many of them discover that even though a university education can lead them anywhere in the world, it can also prepare them for meaningful career paths right here in Alberta—not just in our largest urban centers but in many other places as well.

    2

I am pleased to announce that a generous alumnus recently contributed $100,000 to help us launch the Pathways Program. We hope that his gift will inspire many other alumni and community partners to help us advance this vision. By doing so, together we will not only be supporting student success, we will be investing in the development of local communities. What better place to make this commitment than Augustana, which draws students from small towns all across the province and which is home to the Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities.

Pathways is just one idea for how Augustana can contribute to the communities that support us and that send us students. There are many others—the programs of the Chester Ronning Centre, community service learning placements, Reading University, the Science Fair for students from Our Lady of Mount Pleasant and Ecole Charlie Killam, fine arts programs, Athletics Department outreach to support youth, new professional development initiatives for municipal staff and leaders, etc.

My colleagues and I continue to need your ideas. Please let us know: How can Augustana continue to improve our service to the community? I invite you to dream with us. Thank you once again for your generous support and for your creative ideas.

    Best wishes,Allen Berger, Dean

  • The Community Awards ProgramThe Community Awards Programwas established in 1973 to assist in making post-secondary studies possible for students with limited resources and to attract students to the then Camrose Lutheran College.

An initial committee of community members and college officials was responsible for recruiting gifts to fund awards. Working with the community, the committee promoted two award funds—the Current Scholarship Fund, now called Annual Awards, and the Scholarship Foundation, which held the Community Scholarship Fund and Associated Endowments.

The program met with great success in its early years and that success continues—awards established in those first years are celebrating well over 40 years of commitment to post-secondary education!Today, the Community Awards Program continues to reflect the vision and goals of its founding members. Administered through the Development and Student Awards Offices at Augustana Campus and in partnership with Student Financial Services on the University’s North Campus, we continue to invite interested individuals, businesses, and community organizations to invest in our students.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to all our Community Awards Program donors—past and present—for your vision and commitment to fostering the education of our students.

    Presentation of Student Certificates

Annually Funded AwardsAnnual Awards and Bursaries receive funding each year from committed individuals, businesses and organizations who have pledged to support an award they have created. In 2016, over $136,000 in gifts were received to fund awards and bursaries.

Endowed AwardsAssociated Endowments are established for many reasons—for example, to ensure the annual funding to an existing award in perpetuity, to recognize a loved one, or to create a living legacy. The U of A invests these funds and the principal is never touched, only the earned interest is spent to support the award. In 2016, the interest earned from Augustana’s endowments allowed us to fund awards totaling $126,000.

BursariesBursaries are established by donors who wish to fund a student primarily on the basis of financial need. Bursaries may be funded annually or through establishing an endowment.

The impact of our donor-funded Community Awards Program is truly remarkable! This past year, 183 students were the grateful recipients of donor-funded student awards, scholarships, and bursaries totaling over $260,000. This is over and above faculty-funded awards or other sources of funding our students are eligible to receive.

  • 2016 Entrance Citation RecipientsThe Right Honourable Don Mazankowski Entrance Citation

    18

Carson HvenegaardFor environmental science student Carson Hvenegaard, who grew up in Camrose and attended Camrose Composite High School, Augustana was the logical choice to begin his university career. As this year’s recipient of the Right Honourable Don Mazankowski Entrance Citation Scholarship, Carson notes that the money will make quite a difference, not only in his first year, but for this future plans as well.

“This money means I will be able to do more activities here at Augustana,” Carson explains. “It will [also] make it easier to continue my education after this.”

Although already looking ahead, Carson has also made the most of his short time at Augustana by being involved with the science, outdoor, soccer, and wildlife clubs, and completing a Community Service Learning placement during which he worked with the Camrose Boys and Girls Club. He hopes the rest of his time will include research and travel, but so far, has enjoyed campus life, and has been especially fond of dorm living.

“I’m living in residence and it has been great! My roommate and I get along very well, and it has helped me meet and spend time with many more good friends.”

Gunvor and Erik Mygind Entrance CitationJessica Logan

Jessica Logan grew up in Spruce Grove and chose Augustana for the opportunity to learn at a school entirely committed to undergraduate education. She is studying biology and chemistry and the number of awards she has won–totalling almost $40,000 in funding–has had a large impact on her studies.

“For me, these awards didn’t just mean schooling would be easier, but it would be possible, because financially I wasn’t sure it would be otherwise,” Jessica explained. “Since starting it has given me the drive to study even more diligently, knowing that other people believed in my success so much that they helped me get where I am now.”

Jessica has already begun doing undergraduate research with professor Tom Terzin inthe biology department, and is also volunteering as a Campus Ambassador with the Campus Visits program. She looks forward to participating in the truth and reconciliation workshops next year, finding new places to volunteer on and off campus, and travelling to Costa Rica during her fourth year at Augustana.

    Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award

    Winter 2016

Robyn Perkins (BSc Environmental Science ’16) received the Fall 2016 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award for her work with professor Dee Patriquin on the movements of black-capped chickadees—a North-American bird species—throughout fragmented urban environments. Robyn’s work will help to understand how birds survive in cities and find ways to bolster native avian populations in order to fight the risk of extinction.

    Fall 2016

Robyn’s passion for environmental science and ornithology stemmed from her childhood visits to the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory where she would often find herself thinking that working there “must be the best job in the world.” Fast forward to her University career where Robyn has toured China for a politics/economics course and visited the Beaverhill Bird Observatory during an environmental science class, which have inspired her future plans to visit the Henan province of China for three months to perform behavioral research on two bird species in that area. Long term, Robyn hopes to study bird populations and contribute to avian conservation in the Boreal Forest.

This year’s Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award in Winter 2016 went to Linda Ervin (BA Physical Education ’16) for her research project on Middle Eastern dance (belly dance). Her project focused on belly dancing’s origins, as well as gender performance and the question of cultural appropriation in terms of Middle Eastern dance, supervised by professor Yvonne Becker. “My study was inspired by two contrasting articles…one that found participation in belly dance was associated with many physical and psycho-social benefits for women…while the other, written by a woman of Middle Eastern descent, claimed that white women’s participation in belly dance amounts to a blatant case of wrongful cultural appropriation.”

The multidisciplinary aspect of Linda’s research is also reflected in her current and future career goals. She currently owns a consulting company on corporate wellness, is a partner in a commercial custom painting and decorating company, is taking courses in statistics and kinetic anatomy, and hopes to do further academic work in rehabilitation medicine.
