THROUGH AUGUSTThe American Spirit–An Exhibition of Uncle Sam and OtherPatriotic American Images and Icons”From the Collection of Gerald E. Czulewicz Sr.

This unique exhibition wasdrawn from Czulewicz’scollection of more than 4,000Uncle Sam objects and otherpatriotic American images andicons, the largest collection ofits kind in the world. Includedin the exhibit were works bydozens of American artists, including both Thomas Nast, who first defined the basicimage of Uncle Sam, and JamesMontgomery Flagg, whocreated the most familiar imageof Uncle Sam, the famous “IWant You!” recruiting poster.

The exhibition included the only known originalphotograph of Samuel Wilson from Troy, NY, the officialprogenitor of Uncle Sam by virtue of an act of Congress in1960. Wilson was a purveyor of goods to the American ArmyTroops during the War of 1812. All of his crates and barrelswere stamped “U.S.”, which led him to being referred to asUncle Sam.Also featured were authentic costumes worn by the models

used by Flagg and Nast in the creation of their Uncle Samillustrations, magazine and book illustrations, and original artwork, posters, toys, and banks, etc. Czulewicz began collecting and researching art as a

teenager in Erie, PA, his hometown. His interest in rareAmerican books and documents led to what would become alifelong fascination with Americana, particularly the image ofUncle Sam. Czulewicz, who serves on the Center’s NationalAdvisory Council, and his wife Barbara live in Isanti, MN.

Consider NamingCWS in YourEstate Plan

“Leave a Legacy” is a messageyou may have seen recently onbillboards across South Dakota andthe nation. It’s a campaign beingconducted by the NationalCommittee on Planned Giving toinspire people to make charitablebequests.

The message is a good reminderthat through a will or estate plan weall have the opportunity to make adifference for our families, churches, and organizations that we areassociated with.

In an effort to ensure a strongCenter for Western Studies into thefuture - beyond all of our lifetimes -we have set a goal of adding 30 newmembers and at least $1 million ingift expectancies to the CWSHeritage Club, our planned givingsociety, in the next several years. Todate, the Center has more than 75individuals in its Heritage Club, totaling at least $2.3 million in giftexpectancies. We have added eightindividuals and more than$295,000 in gift expectancies sinceJanuary of 2007.

What will your legacy be? Weurge you to consider including theCenter for Western Studies in yourestate plans ensuring that futuregenerations will be able to enjoy thecollections, programs, and facility foryears to come.

For more information, pleasecontact Paul Krueger, director ofdevelopment, at 605.274.4912 or800.727.2844 ext. 4912.

National Advisory Council memberGerald Czulewicz, whose “Uncle Sam”show is on display here until the end ofAugust, made the front page of the LakeCounty News-Chronicle this spring. He ispictured in the midst of rescuing a muralthat depicts farm and town life duringthe Depression era. The artist, CharlesMorgan, painted the scenes as a WPAproject on the wall of the Two Harbors,MN, High School auditorium, slated fordemolition this spring. Czulewiczconsiders the murals—tempura onconcrete—to belong to the WPAtradition of artwork that is meant “toinstill a sense of abundance, industry, and accomplishment in the midst of theDepression.” Congratulations, Jerry!

In mid-July, word was received fromthe Deupree Family Foundation(Windsor Locks, CT) that the Centerhas been awarded a grant of $2500 tosupport the Hoover "Native AmericanRenaissance" project. For a three-decade period, Dr. Herbert Hoover, ofthe University of South Dakota, photographically recorded the spiritualrenaissance in Sioux life in the NorthernPlains. From the many thousands ofphotos and accompanying notes he hasselected the most significant images andhas thus constructed a digital archivethat is being housed at the Center. Anoted scholar of Sioux history andculture, Hoover is the author of orcontributor to several books, includingThe Sioux and Other Native AmericanCultures of the Dakotas and A New SouthDakota History. In addition, Hoover hasplaced copies at CWS of hisunpublished multi-volume "SiouxCountry Encyclopedia," a distillation ofhis many years of study and analysis ofthe Sioux people.

Lillian Johnsson was named therecipient of the Jennie Award, given bythe national headquarters of the GeneralFederation of Women’s Clubs,Washington, D.C., at the state chapter’sannual conference in Spearfish in April. This places Lillian in the regionalcompetition.

The Midwest Archives Conference, the nation’s largest regional archivesorganization, carried a notice aboutEastman Kodak’s cooperative projectwith CWS to publish Impressions of TribalLife in its July 2008 issue. Thanks againto National Advisory Council memberJeffrey Hayzlett for his work infacilitating this project.

During his campaign stop in SiouxFalls, Sen. Barack Obama received abeaded bolo from Arvol LookingHorse. Since candidates cannot keepdonations, Senator Obama offered todonate the bolo to CWS “in order toexpand awareness of the NativeAmerican culture.”

During the renovation of AugustanaCollege’s Mikkelsen Library, CWS isproviding office and work space for onelibrarian and two library assistants. Theaggressive library renovation schedulecalls for completion of the 1954building in the fall and the 1980addition in January 2009.

The 21st Annual Northern PlainsAutograph Party once again attractedauthors from throughout the region andthe nation to the Dakota Conference.Among the participants at the April 26event were several national prize winners, including President’s HumanitiesMedalist Virginia Driving-Hawk Sneveand Donald Montileaux, winner of fivenational prizes for his illustrations ofTatanka and the Lakota People. Over$3,000 worth of books were sold bythe 40 authors attending; both numbersare new records for the DakotaConference.

Congratulations as well to Councilmember Dr. Virginia Driving-HawkSneve, who was awarded an honorarydegree from South Dakota StateUniversity this spring. Virginia, whosestories about Sioux Indian life have won
