• 28. 3. 1592 born in Moravia (the birthplace of Comenius is not known; there are three possible locations)
– early orphaned (1604)
• education:– 1608–11 Academy of Unity of the Brethren (Přerov)
– 1611–14 Academy at Herborn and the University of Heidelberg
• from 1614 – pastor and school principal in towns Přerov, Fulnek – near Ostrava (1618 the Thirty Years war began)
• after 1620 – persecuted under the Counter Reformation, was a fugitive in his own country (his young wife and two children died of the plague 1622)
• 1628 – fled Moravia to Poland, in Leszno led gymnasium

his second wife died, leaving him with four children
• 1649 married with the third wife
• 1648–50 in Leszno• 1650–56 Sárospatak, Leszno (his manuscripts and the school’s
printing press were burned down)
• 1656–70 Amstedam, buried in Naarden (his grave can be visited in the mausoleum devoted to him).
