From Pastor Nathan Custer:
Lead Like Jesus
I heard a speaker onetime say something like, “If in the year 3 AD you were going to bet on who was going to be more influential on people over 2000 years later in 2016 AD, would you put your money on Caesar Augus-tus, the most powerful ruler of the most powerful and large Empire ever on the face of the earth, or on a baby born in a tiny middle eastern town of Bethlehem with poor parents?” And yet, here we are – with few people even knowing who Augustus was, and the baby Jesus having had a direct, positive impact on a billion people in the past year alone!
You and I are going to live our life and then pass away just like people have been doing for centuries before us, and in this life we have the opportunity to influence people toward and under the influence of Jesus. Influ-ence is leadership: Leadership is influencing people toward a particular end. So if you head up a company, you’re a leader – but you’re also a leader if you’re trying to help your great grandchildren to love God and have good manners!
Jesus has given us a blueprint for how a life can have an enduring legacy of goodness by simply influencing people in a certain way: Jesus’ way. We want to lead like Jesus!
Throughout the coming Sundays we’re going to look at what this looks like and we’re going to catch the conta-gious vision of our Savior and Leader, Jesus the Christ. God wants, needs, and calls you to lead…to be a leader…to be a leader for Him…to be an apprentice of the greatest Leader of all time.
Will you accept that call?
Pastor Nathan
New Procedure for Altar Flowers
Starting January 1, 2016
Just in time for a new year, we will be making a small
change in the procedure for purchasing Altar Flowers for
Sunday services. We hope this makes it easier for eve-
ryone to participate in the giving of altar flowers as we
also honor all the persons we love and share the im-
portant milestones happening in their lives!!
Here is the step by step:
Step 1: Look for a peach form at the greeting coun-ter labeled “Altar Flowers Order Form”
Step 2: Complete the form
Ordering Date: Flowers need to be ordered at least 7 days prior to when you would like the flowers displayed.
Name of Person Placing the Order
Address and Phone number of person placing the order
Name of person or persons you are honoring
Date of the Sunday you wish the flowers to be dis played
Step 3: Attach $25 (Cash or Check) per order to the completed form
Step 4: Place the payment and completed form in the mailbox of the Office Administrator located in the front office.
Once received by the Office Adminis-
trator, Kara Pratt, will update the wall
calendar located near the greeting
counter (in the same spot it was previ-
ously). You can check there as often
as you like for confirmation we have
received your order and payment.
Keep in mind, you may order as many flowers as you
like on any given Sunday even if someone has already
claimed that date with another arrangement. If there are
questions once we receive the form, we will contact you.
Thanks so much for providing the sweet smell of flowers
to our sanctuary all year long! And Happy New Year!!!

Town Hall Meetings
We’ll talk about what all is going on around our church,
how we’re coming in completing our “Consultation Initia-
tives,” who our new Board and Staff members are, and
where we’re going! At the November 2015 Charge Con-
ference, it was suggested that our Town Hall Meetings
from now on be worked into the Sunday morning wor-
ship services so everyone can be on the same page,
inspired by the same information together about our
church family. The next ones will be Sunday Jan. 17,
during the normal 9:00 and 10:30 worship services.
Note that breakfast will be served during and after the
9:00 service!
Leadership Training Day:
From 2:00-4:00 pm on Sunday January 24th, we’ll hold
our first annual training day for any and all leaders of any
and all ministries in the church. We’ll cover all sorts of
things that will better equip you to be able to fulfill your
ministry tasks relating to our church, from how to reserve
and use our building and facilities, to who you should
talk to within the staff for certain needs and questions to
how to get reimbursed for expenses, to how we can part-
ner with you to advertise and promote your events…etc.
etc. etc. It will be SO helpful!
Lead Like Jesus Workshop:
From 2:00-4:00 on Sunday January 31st, we’ll hold a
training event that will help ANYONE who LEADS ANY-
THING – parents who are leading their families, ministry
team leaders, staff, Board members, etc. etc. We’ll use
the book Lead Like Jesus as our starting point that was
co-written by one of the best Christian management
leaders in the world, Ken Blanchard (purchase of the
book will be made available but is not necessary). At
least three additional workshops and / or webinars will
be made available in the months afterward to enable
leaders to dig into and apply Jesus’ leadership principles
in a variety of ways in one’s own specific setting.
Holy Communion & Healing Service
New Year…New Day…New Time
Starting in January the Holy Communion & Healing Ser-
vice will be held once each month on Sunday afternoons
in the Chapel, with the first one scheduled for Sunday,
January 17, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. This will replace the for-
mer RE-CHARGE SERVICES on Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
With over 50 persons attending the Tuesday evening
service, a survey of the participants indicated that 100%
wanted to continue this vital prayer ministry.
Columbia Heights Church is blessed with Prayer Teams
who are available every week after the Sunday Morning
Worship Services to pray one-on-one for personal needs
and requests.
We encourage and invite you to come to the monthly
Holy Communion & Healing Services every 3rd Sunday
of each month, beginning January 17th at 4:00 p.m. Bring
your family members, friends, and neighbors with you.
Be assured that the healing Christ will enhance and
bless your health in body, mind, spirit, and relationships.
Rev. Nathan Custer…Rev. Phil Miller…
Rev. Jim Wagner.
The Giving Tree
A special thank you to all who purchased gifts for The
Giving Tree! Overall, approximately 135 gifts were pro-
vided for 4 family units and 3 individuals. Gifts were
picked up on the 23rd and parents were overwhelmed by
your generosity. This was a huge success, thank you
again to everyone who participated.
A New Year Prayer
May the Lord make my New Year a happy one…
Not by shielding me from sorrow and pain, but by
strengthening me to bear it if it comes.
Not by taking hardship from me, but by taking all cow-
ardice and fear from my heart as I meet hard-
ships.
Not by making my path easy, but by making me sturdy
enough to tread any path.
Not by granting unbroken sunshine, but by keeping my
face bright even in the shadows.
Not by making my life always pleasant, but by showing
me where others and His cause need me most
and by making me zealous to be there and to
help…
God, make my year a happy one.

Why have a regular Healing Ser-vice?
Some say “Should not every worship service be a
healing experience? What is the point of having a special healing service?” Although it is true that whenever two or three or more gather in the name of Jesus Christ many good things happen, the average Sunday morning worship service does not focus spe-cifically on healing. Just as we have special emphasis on evangelism, music, stewardship, education, mis-sions, and social concerns, we need to have specific times to center on healing ministry. “When Jesus sent out his disciples two by two” (Luke 9:1-2), “he com-manded them to heal in his name. This directive from Jesus was meant not only for the early church, but also for the church today” (John 14;12-14). Regularly scheduled healing services proclaim to the congrega-tion and to the surrounding community that God is on the side of good health and welcomes all who seek help, hope, and healing.
Preschool
Hello Everyone,
As we begin a new year let’s all revisit the simple
joys of childhood. One of our students was look-
ing out the window on a very windy day. She said
“Look! The grass is dancing!” May you find joy in
your everyday lives this year.
Thanks to everyone who made our Christmas parties
such a success. And for being so creative with
snacks while following our healthy snack policy.
There will be NO Preschool Monday, January 18,
2015 for Martin Luther King’s day
We will be beginning our next fundraiser. Look for
the Kidstuff Coupon Books to be in circulation
soon. Remember all profits go toward our new
playground equipment.
The Westland Public Library visited our program on
December 15 & 16, 2015. They read several
Christmas stories and provided a craft for each
child to complete.
Ironwood Wolves will be bringing their environmental
message about wolves to Columbia Heights Pre-
school this month. Ambassador animals Cana
and Logan will be here as well. Their visit is slat-
ed for January 12 & 13.
The first checkpoint Early Learning Assessment has
been completed for each student. We will use the
results in our curriculum planning.
Blessings,
Pat Emmelhainz
Bible Zone Pajama Party
Parents and Grandparents please be sure to bring your
kids to church on Sunday, January 10 for our special Pa-
jama Party in Bible Zone. Kids should (obviously) come
dressed in appropriate pajamas, and we'll enjoy watch-
ing cartoons, eating donuts and fruit, decorating pillow
cases, and learning about how to connect with God
when we're in our pajamas.
Our goal is to have 100 kids between the two services
that Sunday. We are seeking donations of the following
items: donut holes, apple and orange juice, fruit, and
fabric markers. Please indicate your intended donation
on the Connect Card. Call Laurie Hurd if you have any
questions, 614-425-4682.
In the New Year
Always remember to forget the troubles that have
passed away, but never forget to remember the
blessings that come each day!
The Future of the Church
To be honest, I don't spend much time trying to envision
what the Church of the future will look like. What will be-
come of Columbia Heights? How will the universal
Church exist in our nation and all over the world 15 or 20
years from now? My personal focus is primarily on TO-
DAY...this week...this coming Sunday...recruiting teach-
ers, pouring over lesson plans, laying out materials. But
even though my mind isn't focused on the future, my un-
derlying PURPOSE is. My role -- and yours -- is to se-
cure the future of the Church, doing what we can to en-
sure that there will continue to be a body of Believers
who can serve the lost, meet needs, and express the
truth of the gospel to the community around them. The
greatest potential for our future enters our church doors
each Sunday being carried in someone arms, crawling
on hands and knees, toddling precariously, racing
around corners leaving a trail of crumbs behind, and
even sometimes dragging their feet in protest behind
Mom and Dad. Why do I do what I do? Why do I come
in on Saturday to set up? Why do I hunch over popsicle
sticks with a glue gun? Why do I search Pinterest for
ideas of crafts and Bible lessons? Because I need to
develop and empower a team of servants who will invest
in the lives of little ones, making church a fun and en-
gaging place where seeds of faith are planted weekly to
later yield a spiritual harvest.
Will you consider joining our team? We are looking for
people passionate about serving the Lord and who are
willing to lend their talents to our children's minis-
try. Here are some ways you can invest your time and
energy:
Check-In Attendants - These servants use a simple
app on an iPad to check in children as they arrive to Bi-
ble Zone and issue printed security tags. Our attendants
are scheduled for one service each month and need to
arrive 20 minutes prior to the
start of service, and may miss
the first 10 minutes of the ser-
vice. Training provided. Back-
up/substitute attendants are
especially needed in the event
of sickness, a fifth Sunday,
etc.
Small Group Leaders - These servants are the most
hands-on with the kids, becoming familiar with them by
serving both services once per month. We have 3 age
break-downs: 3s, 4s & 5s, Lower Elementary, and Upper
Elementary. Leaders of the 3s, 4s & 5s divide the hour
between sharing a simple Bible lesson, leading a craft or
activity, and visiting the playground or "muscle room" for
physical play. Small group leaders for the other groups
start with the kids in their age-specific rooms, getting ac-
quainted, leading part of the lesson, and leading small
group activities. Then the elementary groups join to-
gether in the Fellowship Hall to do large group activities,
learn more, and spend some time in worship. All lesson
plans are sent out in advance and all supplies are pro-
vided and set up in the rooms prior to leaders' arrival on
Sunday morning.
Nursery Team - These servants are also hands-on in
caring for our littlest church members. They are sched-
uled to serve one service per month and oversee the
safety and well-being of infants and toddlers. The posi-
tion may require changing diapers, rocking babies, cud-
dling with little ones, dispensing snacks, and mediating
interpersonal conflict!!! These servants are ministering
not only to the kids, but also to their parents, giving mom
and dad the opportunity to worship and learn without dis-
traction.
If you have questions about either of the positions and/or
need to obtain the required paperwork (Ministry Servant
Application, Ministry Handbook, Reference forms), con-
tact Laurie Hurd, the Director of
Family Ministries, via email: [email protected].
