CPS Excellence and Identity

The College of Population Studies (CPS), Chulalongkorn University is the first research and educational

institution on demography and population studies in Thailand. For almost half a century after establishment, CPS has carried a strong tradition of academic excellence in graduate programs in demography, research and social contributions on population issues. Different from many other research institutes, whose activities are mostly involve area-based, issue-based, and/or problem-based study, CPS’ academic activities are strictly based on the core discipline.

The important role of College of Population Studies is not only “providing knowledge to learners”, but also “expanding frontier of knowledge by research” and “building new bodies of knowledge” on demography and population studies. CPS makes timely and flexible adjustments to the teaching-learning process, curriculum and research directions to be able to catch up with external changes in order to lead our society by knowledge.

The body of knowledge on demography and population studies derived from research shall be integrated into our graduate educational programs. Simultaneously, CPS emphasizes the importance of research-oriented teaching in our demography programs. At CPS, research and education have nnever been separated.

CPS builds strong academic networks with higher educational institutions and research institutes at both nationally and internationally. CPS cooperates academically with the government sector and civil society as well.

Our research will not be only put on bookshelves. CPS gives greater importance to transforming research outputs and body of knowledge to policy implementation for solving important population-related problems in Thai society.

Voices from Students and AlumniThanawan Tanwattanapratip

MasterofArtsinDemography(2012)

In my case, I study at the CPS because I am interested in demography and there are only a few people who know about it and I think Demography will help to develop Thailand, so I don’t hesitate to study here. During the time I have studied here I am able to develop new skills which can be applied to daily life. Because College of Population Studies not only teach me about Demography but I still get to learn about other useful skills, after I finished coursework I started working in CPS as a researcher, I get experience and learn many skills about research method from professors and researchers. College of Population Studies, Chulalongkorn University for me is more than the place that teaches me. CPS is second home which has many teachers who are dedicated to teach, conduct research as well as give opportunities and love for students. I feel very happy to be a part of College of Population Studies and I will try my best to be a good researcher and help our college.

College of Population Studies, Chulalongkorn University in my opinion is one of the best educational institutions in Thailand and the world, which provides an opportunity for those who are interested in high standard form of learning in the field of demography. Ever since I started to study here, I found out that this is the kind of quality of education I have been looking for. All lecturers here are very professional and scholarly and dedicate to achieve the world-class academic teaching. There is also a wide array of facilities that I can use to self-develop my knowledge such as very resourceful libraries and free access to world-leading journals, which are totally a chance to boost my proficiency. In addition, administrative affair staffs are very friendly and helpful. If I have problem, they are always willing to help out. Indeed, there is only one word to describe CPS, Superb.

On-anong SaiphoklangPh.D.PrograminDemography(2010)

I have been studying in the PhD program at College of Population Studies for 5 years and I have loved every moment of it. Not only have I got the quality of education, but I have also learned and experienced many things here. Most students at CPS know how close the students and the lecturers are; terrific advisor, wonderful lecturer, and fantastic staff. I have got a lot of great opportunities while I am doing a PhD. Thank you CPS, especially my AWESOME advisor!

Titikarn AssatarakulPh.D.PrograminDemography(2012)

I came here for the first time about 3 years ago and I felt that the College of Population Studies is such asmall place. However, when I started to study here I found that the CPS is a very high quality college. From my point of view, all professors here are professional and scholarly; moreover, CPS provides excellent experiences for me. In addition, if I have any problems the administrative affair staffs are always willing to help out. I am so proud that I am part of this college.

Subhachak SaengprachaksakulaPh.D.PrograminDemography(2009)

College of Population Studies, Chulalongkorn University in my opinion is one of the best educational institutions in Thailand. I have really loved my time at this institute. In particular I have really appreciated the small classes which have allowed me to really get under the skin of the subjects I have been taking. There is also a wide array of facilities that I can use to self-develop my knowledge such as very resourceful libraries and free access to world-leading journals, which are totally a chance to boost my proficiency.

I have experienced the most useful period of my life, where I have gained a lot of knowledge about my field of study. Also, it gives me a broad range of opportunities to grow in the future. All of the professors have got a good head on their shoulder and can be depended on to teach and give excellent knowledge and suggestion. Moreover, academic and administrative staffs give wonderful cooperation and support to us. I’m very proud to say that I am a student of the College of Population Studies, Chulalongkorn University.

I started working in the CPS as a research assistant after I graduated the Bachelor Degree 10 yearsago. Here I could study demography deeply and worked together with many skilful professors and researchers therefore I was able to develop my potential not only in academic but also in living skills. I certainly decided to study in Master Program and am now in PhD Program and this can bring me a lot of invaluable knowledge and experience. For me, the CPS is a second home with teachers giving knowledge, opportunities and love to all students without expecting anything in return. Furthermore staffs here encourage all parties and help students who are in trouble. I am proud and happy to be a part of this lovely society and it will be in my memory forever.

Though CPS is the smallest faculty in Chulalongkorn University, I have learnt that it is the oldest population Studies Center where many initial research projects were done on demography of Thailand. All faculty members both teaching and non-teaching staff were found so hardworking and sincere handling the huge and great task despite being the smallest faculty. I feel the scope of CPS is very good and it can be the demography research center of ASEAN region in the long run or in the near future since CPS has great things to offer in population studies.

Paolo Miguel VicerraMasterofArtsPrograminDemography,2014Affiliate Teaching Member, Faculty of Management and Development Studies,University of the Philippines Open University

Studying at the College of Population Studies had been a tremendously fascinating and fruitful experience. It was here that I was exposed to a vast amount of information and ideas because of all the avenues the college opened by inviting local and foreign scholars. The faculty members, staff, and students were encouraging in everyone’s academic endeavors. They even assured that my security and well-being were attended which is very important because I never felt alone and helpless. With everything that I experienced in CPS, I am hoping that more students, especially from the Philippines, would be able to study there as well.

Mai Ngueyn Nhat ChiMasterofArtsPrograminDemography,2014Researcher, Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

CPS is a comfortable place to learn about demography. All the lecturers are so kind for educating me for the past two years. They gave me a lot of useful materials, books as well as encouraged me to successfully overcome the obstacles of my course work. CPS is also a place to make new friends to exchange knowledge and culture. It is worthy to be here in life.

Nguyen Thi Thanh TrucMasterofArtsPrograminDemography,2014DemographyDepartment,FacultyofPublicHealth, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam

CPS is a comfortable place to study with high quality courses. Although CPS does not have many faculty members and facilities but the courses were still conducted well. The lecturers have immense knowledge and very enthusiastic. The staff is always willing to respond to all students’ needs. Students are offered opportunities to attend academic training workshops, and present in international conferences. My knowledge and skills on demography and population studies have been considerably expanded and improved. If someone asks me for a suggestion, I will definitely recommend applying to CPS.

I am pleased with studying in CPS because our lecturers are very knowledgeable, very good at teaching, very active and can construct a good relation with the students. Another reason why I am very impressed with CPS is CPS’s very kind and friendly office staffs. They are very desirable to help us whenever we need help. CPS can also support what we need as much as possible and can fill up our need; for example, arranging the transportation for going to immigration office for our visa extension. At last, in CPS, there is no nationality discrimination at all.

My first impression when I went to CPS was very positive. I find the faculty itself a rather friendly environment that just made me feel completely at home. It is very wonderful to me to study in CPS. I am not only studying from the theories in document but I also got knowledge from lecturers; my classmates and people around me. We shared our ideas, knowledge, and experiences more often both outside and inside the classroom. Students can enjoy their studies comfortably in cool air-conditioned and well-equipped rooms. One of my most favourite corners is the library. I could stay all day reading books, doing research and surfing the Internet in the library - it’s a fantastic resource.

The Role of CPS

Since its inception, the CPS has gained national and international recognition as one of the world’s leading population institutes, with research programs that are considered outstanding.

Over a 30-year period, CPS has carried out more than 250 small- and large-scale research projects. These research efforts have not only made a substantial contribution to the academic arena, but have also directly benefited population policy formulation with significant impact on society.

Research Focus

In recent years, CPS has had two main research focuses:

• Core demographics, including research related to birth, death and migration.

• Issue-based, problem-based and area-based research, including applied research examining socio-demographic, educational, political, health-related, economic, or cultural issues regarding demographic changes.

Interdisciplinary Research

In addition, CPS conducts interdisciplinary research by combining demography with related disciplines, incorporating experts in other fields into research projects. For example, research efforts may focus on population and health, population and the environment, population and natural disasters or demographic changes and related socio-economic impact.

Research Networks

CPS has establ ished strong research networks with domestic and international counterparts. Many research projects have been undertaken in collaboration with scholars from top-tier universities and leading research institutes abroad. The following are examples of on-going research projects:

• A Better Understanding of the Situation of Older People in Thailand through a Comparative Study with Korea, Myanmar and Vietnam

• Care Relations in Southeast Asia• Towards a Resilient ASEAN Community Beyond

2015

The research efforts have not only made a substantial contribution to the academic arena, but have also directly benefitedpopulationpolicyformulationwithsignificant

impactonsociety.

CPS and the Asian MetaCentre

In 2000, in collaboration with the Asia Research Institute (ARI) at the National University of Singapore and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Austria, CPS helped establish a new research program called the Asian MetaCentre. The aim of this program is to develop research initiatives on themes relating to population, sustainable development and health. Such efforts include population forecasting, international migration, changing family structures and the Asian family, population-devel-opment-environment-health interactions, fertility, and the consequences of population dynamics on human well-being and health. In addition, the Asian MetaCenter, along with the Asian Population Network (APN), organizes relevant workshops, provides training for skills development, engages in research projects, as well as publishes its research findings. For more information, please visit http://www.populationasia.org.

Research Excellence

The aim of CPS’s research efforts is not only to broaden the academic horizon, but also to further national policies on population and related issues having a direct impact on communities and society.

In recognition of CPS’s outstanding demographic research and population studies, many projects have been acknowledged with national awards, for instance, the 2009 Outstanding Research Project Award in Sociology from the National Research Council of Thailand and the 2008-2009 Senior Research Scholar Award from the Thailand Research Fund. Internationally, the faculty of CPS has earned recognition by being actively involved in several professional organizations, such as the Asian Population Association and agencies within the United Nations.

CPS Work-in-progress Seminar

CPS Work-in-progress (CPS-WIP) seminars are organised on a regular basis of twice a month, during the

regular academic terms. The series started in August 2013, with an aim to provide an opportunity for research students - both at the Masters and PhD levels, and for both Thai and International students - to present their work-in-progress, and receive comments and suggestions from fellow students and faculty members that can potentially contribute towards the improvement of their work. It also aims to encourage the exchange of ideas and comments, and to help students develop their research and presentation skills.

In addition, the seminars also provide a platform for CPS faculty members, CPS research fellows, and other

researchers outside the CPS, who work on Demography, Population Studies and Development, as well as related topics, to present their latest work and interact with students.

Examples of the seminar sessions include presentations on “Is Intergenerational Solidarity Really on the Decline? Cautionary Evidence from Thailand” by Professor John E. Knodel, University of Michigan, “The Demography of Living Alone: Comparative Analysis of Asian Censuses” by Dr. Peter Xenos, College of Public Health Sciences, Chulalongkorn University, and “Apportioning Change in Philippine Total Fertility Rate: Employing Bongaart’s Model of Proximate Determinants” by Paolo Viccera, our M.Sc. student.

Postdoctoral Fellowship In 2004 Chulalongkorn University announced it was giving support for post-doctoral research in order to ensure that graduates, especially in the graduate levels, would have the knowledge and skills that meet international standards.

It was also hoped that they could contribute towards creating bodies of knowledge that foster better connections with communities of all levels to elevate Chulalongkorn University to a status of a research university and produce graduates of international status. Moreover, in order to increase the number and quality of research projects to meet with international standards and to raise the competence of professors and researchers in generating research, the university deems it appropriate to encourage doctoral graduates with high potentials to take interests in applying their advanced academic proficiency to strengthen the education and research, therefore ensuring the more efficient and effective performance along the university’s policies.

CPS Postdoctoral Fellows

Dr.TadashiNakasuPh.D.(Dissertation),IwatePrefecturalUniversity,JapanResearch Topic: Elderly People’s Vulnerability to Natural Disasters inThai Local Communities

About CPSI have just moved to Thailand on 10th of April. Before the time, I was a typical Japanese hard worker. The job was so stressful but I had managed the situation somehow. When I came to CPS, I felt relieved. CPS members are always kind to me. My worry before coming here has gone. Only one and a half months have passed. However, I can say I am so lucky that I can work with such wonderful CPS members.

Dr.NekehiaTamaraQuashiePh.D.Sociology,TheUniversityofUtah,SaltLakeCityResearch Topic: Changing Family Structures, Intergenerational Transfers and the Well-being of the Thai Elderly

About CPSI am extremely privileged to have been awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at Chulalongkorn University and even more to have the opportunity to fulfill my first job, after completing my PhD, at the College of Population Studies (CPS). Professsionally, I am very honored to work with the faculty at CPS. I am constantly impressed by the collegiality of the faculty and their work ethic. I am fortunate to have entered the department at a time of growth. Personally, I am exceedingly grateful for the warmth that the faculty and staff have shown me since my arrival in September 2014. Everyone is helpful and accommodating. CPS is a great launching pad for my career. I cannot express enough thanks.

Asian MetaCentre Training WorkshopSince 2011, CPS has annually hosted an intensive training workshop on Demographic Analysis with Computer Applications

to train and re-train professionals in demography and other related fields who wish to reinforce their skills and gain knowledge of advanced techniques regarding demographic analysis. The workshop lasts two weeks and covers a range of topics on demographic and statistical methods, for example, life tables and mortality analysis, stable populations, population projection, data graduation and smoothing technique.

This workshop is taught by Professor Scherbov, the leader of the Population Dynamics and Forecasting Group at Vienna Institute of Demography (VID), and co-organized by International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Austria, under the Asian MetaCenter research program.

The Population Information Center serves both as a  REFERENCE LIBRARY  and clearing house of

information. It contains a wide range of materials on Demography and other related fields.  It also consists of over 20,000 volumes of books in Thai and English as well as theses, proceedings of conferences, CPS publications, periodicals, reprints, series and other library materials.

With the advent of advanced information technology, the information center has developed its collection to collect the information in the form of databases, which in turn allows users to search the information from our online databases.

For the library’s services, the  Population InformationCenter Database and Repository  plus several online databases are readily available for access. Users can easily access these databases by visiting  the College of Population Studies Website or Chulalongkorn University Library Website.

Library materials found in the center are for room use only and cannot be borrowed for home use. The library also offers interesting information on population to various government agencies, non-government agencies, private agencies, international agencies, university, schools, etc. Currently, the library has a mailing list database of about 3000 records that are usually utilized for information dissemination.
