Dear Valued Colleague, In light of our recent company brief and with this month’s EVP theme Grow, we took time to reflect on the following items: Our CSI overall score has grown from 88.4 % in January 2012 to 90.2 % in July 2013, with our Supplier/Dealer ratings coming out tops. Let us continue to keep this score growing! Our Fleet Size is continually growing, with our current fleet size sitting on 276 048 units. We also managed to retain the G4S

Secure Solutions account and are currently tendering for the G4S soft skin fleet against Imperial and Eqstra, we can potentially see a growth of 44 vehicles should we be successful on this tender. The COJ Team has recently been nominated for the CEO Award. Every year; the Barloworld CEO Awards recognises the contributions and achievements of those who have gone beyond ordinary. Seven finalists representing the divisions will go on to compete for the ultimate title of the Barloworld CEO Award Winner. Winning the hotly contested City of Johannesburg (COJ) contract has been an outstanding success for Avis Fleet Services as well as for Barloworld Motor Retail. The tender was submitted in December 2010, with preferred bidder notification on 23 November 2011, acceptance of bid on 16 January 2012, and final award in November 2012. The staying power and unremitting focus and attention over this period are testimony to the dedication of the team to achieving its single goal. We wish them all the best of luck in the finals! Tough negotiating and outstanding teamwork is what makes this team winners!! The EVP Theme for September was Grow, our job is to help you grow and develop in your job. We do this by managing, measuring and reviewing your personal growth against defined targets and goals. We promote competence development through continuous learning. We will be introducing the Individual Development Plan (IDP) which is the essential tool to determine each employee’s “growth plan”. Each individual must take responsibility for their growth and development and discuss their aspirations with their Managers. Thank you

Fleet Management Learnership Programme – Class of 2013

The next stepping stone on this

journey is to explore “Grow” and

growth opportunities.

“The illiterate of the future will not be the person who cannot read. It will be the person who does not know how to learn.” – Alvin Toffler

Tuesday, 27th August saw the Graduation ceremony for the 2012/2013 NQF Level 5 Fleet Management Learnership students. The graduation took place in the auditorium with all the students as well as their families after a lunch that was held in honour of their special day.

2

These students dedicated a year to their studies with many challenges along the way, it has taken a huge amount of self-discipline, motivation and hard work but they succeeded in their challenge. Certificates were handed out to each graduate as well as a trophy to the top performer of the Learnership which was awarded to Jana Thorrold (Manager: Business Intelligence). When Jana was asked what inspired her during the

333

Learnership Programme she said “most definitely my fellow-learners. It was a pleasure to get to know everyone, they always made class fun and it was a good time to take my mind off work and learn something new.” Jana said what motivated her to do so well was that the programme added more and more value to her everyday life, as well as having something to do and doing it properly.

Avis Fleet Services – Project Vuselela Sage X3 Financial System Implementation

As you may be aware, the finance and IT departments headed up by Michelle Erasmus and Mike Re have recently embarked on the journey of replacing our current financial system, Oracle, with Sage X3. The decision was made in order to improve the efficiency of our finance processes as well as our reporting capabilities by using the wide range of standard functionalities available within the Sage X3 system. The implementation project has been contracted out to a company named Lorge by way of an extensive tender process. Lorge has widespread experience in the X3 implementation field and has assisted major organizations such as Discovery with their implementation projects. The project team consists of various members from the finance and IT departments and is headed up by Giles Knight from a project management perspective. As of the end of August 2013, we have had various high level workshop meetings with Lorge as we begin to scope and define our financial system requirements. The finance team is very excited by this change as it will allow us to improve the way we do things and give the finance users the tools to better perform their day to day jobs. Our planned Go-Live date is 1 May 2014. The name of our project has been decided as Project Vuselela. Vuselela means renewal, rebirth or revival in Xhosa/Zulu, and so this project represents the revival of the AFS finance system through Sage X3. This marks a very important milestone in the development and growth of Avis Fleet Services as we continuously strive to stay the very best at what we do at all levels of the organization.

AFS Ghana Host Business Partners to South African Hospitality

Heritage Day was celebrated on the 24 September recognises and celebrates the cultural wealth of our nation. South Africans celebrate the day by remembering the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa.

Heritage is a celebration of all things that makes us who we are as South Africans, our history, culture, music, dance, language, food, traditions etc. South Africa is a rainbow country and Heritage Day is the perfect time to showcase that or better yet do things that help preserve our cultures and history.

We asked a few staff members what Heritage Day meant to them and this is what we got back:

“For me it means reflecting on who we are, where we come from and where we are heading to as people” – Debbie Titus

Becoming a sushi chef for the day

The 5th September, saw our valued Customers in Port Elizabeth attending our Annual Ladies Day, which took place at the stunning Isango Gate Boutique Hotel in Summergate. The ladies had an hour’s presentation from a professional sushi chef, and were then taught how to make their own sushi, which they caught the hang of very quickly and good sushi wamade all round. This was followed by a delicious lunch at the hotel. The ladies walked away with their very own sushi making kit as well as some new skills.

You Don’t Need A Holiday, You Need Cape Town

On Wednesday 18 September 2013, customers of Avis Fleet Services played tourist for a day in the Mother City. The sightseeing took them to the Company Gardens for morning tea and to feed squirrels (and pigeons!), up the Mountain and ended with lunch in Sea Point. Despite a gloomy weather report, the sun came through for those who believe in We Try Harder and where it will take them. Our Customers thoroughly enjoyed themselves - although a tad tired, returned safely to the Two Oceans Aquarium at the Waterfront and departed home – in time to beat rush hour!

How Can You Make A Difference?

HOW TO RECYCLE AT HOME

1. Separate your waste – keep wet (waste) and dry (recyclables) apart 2. Find out which recyclables are accepted for recycling in your community (a school, drop-off site, buy-back centre

or curb-site collection) by the Municipality 3. Educate your household – post a list of the things that are recycled somewhere visible until you and your family get

into the habit 4. Set up a holding area for your recyclables – it could be a box or clearly marked bins. Once you have collected

enough recyclable materials, plan a trip to your nearest drop-off site (saves fuel!!) or support your curb side collection.

5. Clean the recyclables if heavily soiled e.g. foodstuff 6. Flatten the plastic bottles, cartons, cardboard boxes and cans to reduce volume 7. A plastics identification code appears on the product to identify packaging plastics –

www.recyclingday-sa.co.za

Do not litter ‘Packaging doesn’t litter. People do!’ Packaging – too valuable to waste. Recycle.

National Recycling day took place on the 20th September this year, where all schools, business and communities are encouraged to recycle.”This is one day of the year that we are making an appeal to South Africans to consciously recycle their plastics, cans, glass, paper, oil and e-waste and in order to reduce the pressure on our country’s landfills.” Steyn says. We ask each and every individual to make an effort to recycle every day of the year!

WHY RECYCLE?

Recycling benefits both the environment and the economy

• Less energy is used when recycled materials are included in the manufacturing process • Benefits the South African economy as it decreases the necessity to import raw materials • Opportunities for income generation and alleviation of poverty through job creation • Prevents litter • Contributes to a cleaner, greener and healthier South Africa • Less waste, creates more landfill space • Pride in our environment • It's your responsibility and mine.

Our KZN Ladies day took place onboard the Spirit of Elan Cruise Liner on the 5th September where the ladies were treated to a fabulous breakfast on board a 2-hour cruise along the Durban North Coastline. The ladies thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the day provided an unforgettable opportunity to engage with our customers and their appointed “Women in Business”.

Sounds like a broken record, but this year the research should be driving you off the couch, onto the sports field or into the gym more than ever before. The reason? Inactivity is just as bad for your heart as smoking. Not something we like to hear, but true. Heart disease falls into the category of non-communicable diseases, which means we have some control on reversing or preventing the factors that contribute to making this even worse than it could be.

Some hard-hitting facts:

• Being inactive accounts for nearly 10% of all coronary heart disease related deaths each year • A third of adults are at high risk of disease because they aren’t being active enough • More people are inactive than smoke – we know smoking is bad for you, so inactivity should be considered

worse.

The benefits of exercise/activity

• Keeps your heart healthy – it lowers blood pressure, increases good cholesterol and lowers bad cholesterol • Reduces your risk of a stroke • Prevents or controls Type II Diabetes • Reduces your risk of osteoporosis, certain skeletomuscular diseases and biomechanical diseases • Can lower your risk of certain cancers • Can help control or reduce your weight • Can increase your lifespan – and improve the quality of your years.

How much activity will do the job? Activity should not be mistaken for sport – physical activity is ANY physical movement produced by the skeletal muscles that utilise energy. This can include sport, exercise and any other activity like playing, walking (yourself, dogs or kids), doing house work, gardening and even dancing.

The verdict 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, in short: 30 minutes over 5 of the 7 days. If that seems like too much, think of it as 2% of an entire day or 3% of 16 waking hours. That doesn’t seem too bad right?

“My 7 x growth orders inspired me this week!” – Simone Visser

“During my meeting with “my bokkie” Lydia at Necsa (my biggest customer) she said that we are way passed a business relationship and that to her, I am like a best friend….That really hit home and made me feel warm and fuzzy made it all worthwhile…” – Jeanette Bossert

“My inspiration today comes from you. You are my mentor with my learnership and on the long road to a customer, you went through my two assignments with me. They are due to be handed in next Wednesday. You gave me guidance with my answers, complimented me on answers and went out of your way to buy the binder. I understand the office needs one anyway for proposals, but you purchased it the day I wanted to bind the documents. Thank you for investing valuable time in me and for being my inspiration today.” – Natasha Ryan

“For me, I am extremely inspired today to be working for Avis Fleet Services when I reflect back on the past week and look at some of the feedback received from our valued customers” – Liezel Tapuch

AFS Botswana Helping The Elderly On Saturday 31 August, a team of AFS brand ambassadors descended upon the old Naledi suburb of Gaborone to hand out second hand clothing, blankets and food-packs to some of the elderly who cannot move from their houses and also to give lunch to the elderly in the area who are part of the Bagodi Ba Rona Association.” Our Corporate Social Responsibility is focussed in three main areas – the elderly, aids orphans (and needy children), and breast cancer awareness. On the wildlife side we also support the Kalahari Conservation Society, and from a cultural and heritage perspective we give an annual donation to the Botswana Society. “ Says Julian Hill

The idea of going door to door was initiated by Monica’s observation that many of these people are unable to get out of their houses, so a visit by our team along with Mabel Basson, a former Avis employee who is the founder of the association, helped brighten their weekend. Lunch was also attended by some 100 elderly from the area who are members of Bagodi Ba Rona. – Julian Hill
