Dear Colleagues,

It seems like just yesterday that we were preparing the budgets and strategy for the 2014 financial year, worrying about our stretch targets and the achievability of our dreams.

Well, in the blink of an eye we are three-quarters of the way through the year and we seem to be on track to meet most of our Plan 1 targets. What we need to do as a team is to keep the momentum going and to do our best to exceed Plan 1.

Each and every member of the team can contribute to our success in their own unique way, including the following:

• Living the Barloworld and Avis values and ethics, • Servicing your customers, both internal and external, • Going that extra mile and putting in that extra bit of effort that

exceeds the expectations of the customer, supplier or stakeholder, • Finding the creative solution that solves the customer’s problem in an

innovative way and creates the value that brings about long-term loyalty and repeat purchasing from AFS,

• Create the customer for life, • Get involved in the detail,

The power of doing this right in the AFS operations in South Africa, Moçambique, Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia and Ghana, as well as in Phakisaworld and Vuswa is awesome, and if we all pull in the same direction we can overcome all the obstacles in our way.

As we also move closer to financial year-end, I urge everyone to pay attention to the finances of the business, including the balance sheet – reduce inventory and collect debtors, to the income statement – watch costs and grow revenue, and to positive cash flow – bring in as much cash as possible before year-end and manage accounts payable over year-end.

At the heart of Avis Fleet Services are our people in red, who carry our brand and deliver our promise to our customers. The red of our uniform expresses the warmth of our brand and our passion for exceeding our customers’ expectations at every interface.

When we put on the AFS red, we become Brand Ambassadors.

At our personal interfaces with our customers, each of us represents the brand, and each of us is responsible for providing our customers with our exceptional experience. It is our people that set us apart and distinguish us in the market.

YYou are an AFS Brand Ambassador. We t rust you with our brand and expect you to del iver on our promises.

The AFS experience includes our uniform and the way we wear it. In choosing to wear the AFS uniform we are choosing to wear it with pride, to enhance the impact of our personal interactions with our customers and to strengthen our image.

The guidelines set out are intended to safeguard our image and ensure that our customers get what they expect from AFS. In the spirit of “We Try Harder”,we trust that you will respect them and protect our brand.

Shortly many of you will be receiving your long awaited new uniform issue. We know that you are all excited and have been waiting patiently. In saying that, we would just like to remind you of the manner in which your uniform needs is to be worn; what is acceptable and how to ensure you always step out in style – in the AFS way. Uniform Policy

Code Red • 2014

• Jackets must only be dry-cleaned.

• Shirts and slacks should either be dry-cleaned or hand washed. If you hand wash, use cold water. Hang up to dry. Dry in the shade (very important to avoid fading).

• Avoid using a washing powder that contains bleach or stain removing agents, as the colour will fade. We recommend Surf, Sunlight or Skip. NOTE: Please do not put your skirt or slacks into the washing machine.

• If you need to iron your skirt or slacks, either press it with a pressing cloth or use an upright steam iron. This will prevent shining.

• Blouses may be machine washed on a short, gentle cycle, in lukewarm water. Wash only with other whites (very important).

• To prevent discolouration, blouses should NOT be dried in direct sunlight Iron collars from the outside edge to the inside and not the other way around.

• If your white starts looking grey, soak in cold water and Biotex overnight before washing. DO NOT USE BLEACH as bleach causes yellowing.

• The scarf should be hand-washed.

• Please take care not to tear skirt slits while getting in/out a car. If you skirt does develop a tear, sew up the tear immediately to avoid any further damage.

• Hang up your uniform at night. When travelling by car hang your jacket on a hanger to keep it looking smart and fresh.

• Make sure your uniform is clean and pressed at all times.

Uniform Care

Please make sure that you are fully aware of the terms of the AFS Uniform Policy. If cared for well, your uniform will easily look good for a period of two years.

HHow to wear your “We Try Harder” badges and name badge: AFS Brand Ambassadors wear their name badges and their “We Try Harder” badges at ALL times. They are worn on the left front of all garments. The name badge is worn below the “We Try Harder” badge to underline our promise and centered one pencil width below it. On the jacket, the name badge must be worn in the pocket cuff and the “We Try Harder” badge above it. Long Service Award pins: Only one “Year of Service” award pin may be worn at one time. Wear on the jacket, on the right lapel.

4

Page 6: Code Red 20

6

SSkirt Length: • Keep your skirt at a moderate length, no more

than 6cm below the knee and not more than 6cm above the knee.

• The length of the skirt, together with the length of the jacket, should enhance the style.

• The width of the hem should be at least 3cm, to look smart.

SShoes:

• We wear plain black leather or imitation leather shoes, in a simple court style with a moderate heel. Buckles, chains, straps or platform heels may not be worn as they detract from the impact of the uniform. Your shoes are important – if your feet feel good your smile will make our customers feel good.

• With the uniform, we wear only Blackmail stockings. Opague, patterned or textured hosiery may not be worn as they detract from the impact of the uniform.

Grooming:

• AFS Brand Ambassadors always wear clean, well pressed uniform, to reflect the pride we feel in our brand. • Blouses are tucked into the skirt or slacks. • Hair is kept clean and tidy and worn in a way that enhances the Avis image. • If your hair is longer than shoulder length, keep it neatly off your face, so that our customers can easily see your

eyes and your smile. • Keep hands and nails clean and neatly manicured. Designs on nails, chipped polish and extreme colours weaken

the impact of the brand. • Wear makeup to enhance your features and present a bright, fresh face for our customers. • Under the blouse, wear plain neutral undergarments to avoid showing through.

Jewel lery and Accessor ies:

• We keep our jewellery simple to express the honesty of our brand. • One ring on each hand (engagement ring and wedding band count as one ring) • One simple, thin gold or silver-coloured bracelet on each arm in addition to a watch. • Only one set of plain gold/silver or simple pearl earrings may be worn. (No more than one centimeter below the

earlobe.) • Wear only one slim gold or silver-coloured neck chain, or a single strand of pearls, of moderate length. All other

necklaces must be concealed. • Nose rings, studs and other piercings detract from the AFS image and should be kept for non-work occasions.

Tattoos must be covered. • Handbags must be plain black. • “Medic-Alert” jewellery may be worn at any time. • Hair clips, alice bands, combs or ornaments should be of a plain design in black, gold, silver or tortoise shell

colour. • In winter, wear black gloves and black knitted scarf when outside.

• Male employees are expected to wear the AFS tie with the AFS long sleeve shirt, grey trousers, black belt and black shoes. You do not need to wear the tie if you wear the short sleeve shirt, unless you are working behind the counter with customers.

• Plain black socks are worn with the uniform. • Black shoes, or black ankle boots, which

support the professional image, may be worn with the uniform. Work boots such as CATS are not appropriate for men who work indoors.

• In winter, wear black gloves and black knitted scarf when outside. GGrooming:

• AFS Brand Ambassadors always wear clean well pressed uniforms, to reflect the pride we feel in our brand.

• Hair is kept clean and tidy and worn in a way that enhances the AFS image.

On the 11th April, Wayne Bartley and his team invited the AFS Gauteng Sales Team to an afternoon braai at Car Mall Benoni. Elana Summers made the necessary preparations and compliments to her for the wonderful food and ample refreshments. Wayne delivered a welcome speech and when formalities were over the fun began. The Sales Team got to know the Car Mall Team much better on a social level and were introduced to staff members that they had dealt with for a long time but had never met in person. This also created a platform where they learnt more about key issues between the departments and got a better understanding of daily challenges that they are faced with.

The 31st March, 2014 saw the Lesotho Mounted Police Services presented with the all new Isuzu D-Teq 250 Kb Diesel Double Cabs. This spectacular 4-cylinder, 5 speed manual bakkie will enable the Police to carry out their duties stress free. As the Lesotho Police slogan goes, ”Lepolesa, Mothusi, Motsoalle”, roughly translated, “Police, Your Help, Your Friend”. With these mean machines, they will be able to conquer Lesotho’s tough terrain with ease as they have a 5 year/90 000km service plan and a 3 year anti-corrosion warranty to survive the harsh winter colds and scorching sun in the summer. The new Isuzu will enable Lesotho’s police to execute their duties with ease as Avis Fleet Services has dedicated technicians that are on stand-by 24/7 countrywide, to offer assistance if the need arises. Since the Lesotho Mounted Police Force initiated a campaign of zero tolerance, crime in Lesotho has since deteriorated drastically. We at Avis Fleet Services continually commit to keeping each and every one of our customers happy and we strive for customer service excellence to suit each of their individual needs. – Themba Nyathi

Avis Fleet Services Lesotho Deliver New Vehicles To The Lesotho Police Services

Procurement Team Overview The AFS Procurement team has undergone some changes during the past two years and have grown in leaps and bounds in order to support the growing needs of the Business. They now have a staff compliment of 23 heads, up from 9 heads at the end of 2011. The 23 heads are made up of 20 full-time AFS employees plus 3 full-time BWFM pricing specialists. The structure has been re-worked to allow for the most efficient support process to the various customer requirements. To this end Procurement now has two clear lines:

Corporate Procurement Bulk / Special Procurement

Orders Team

9

Page 11: Code Red 20

11

Under the Corporate Procurement line , two dedicated teams have been established with the sole purpose of getting vehicles on the system as fast as possible. The first team is the Ordering team. This team consists of 5 people and their main focus is to check order details, place orders on the correct suppliers at the correct price, follow-up on outstanding orders continuously, ensure all additional fitments and providing any information required by suppliers in order to deliver units ordered by AFS. The second team is the Delivering team. This team consists of 5 people and their main focus is to check all supporting documentation during the hand-over of vehicles to customers and to arrange for payment of the suppliers. This step is critically important and this team ensures that payments can be finalised smoothly and there is no risk to the company. They also ensure that we are in a position to bill the customers for the vehicles they lease from us. The Bulk Procurement team deals with the bigger corporate customers, the existing Government related customers and also provide the tender pricing inputs. This is the newest team in Procurement and there is currently a lot of focus on them to ensure they have the required processes and tolls in place to deal with the bulk customers effectively. The team also includes the Commercial Vehicle & Special vehicle support. For the first time we will also now have a buyer for all company stationary included in the Bulk Procurement team. This is the firs step towards creating a central purchasing division in the company to deal with all Procurement and not just vehicle-related Procurement. The Procurement team handles on average 650 vehicle orders per month. At a conservative average of R 250,000 per vehicle this represents spend of R 162,500,000 per month. Furthermore our order book is consistently above 1,000 units. Despite all the pressure the team is under and the serious dead-lines that have to be met the procurement team remains highly motivated and keeps on delivering above expectation on a daily basis. The developing and implementation of the superior reports currently being used further illustrates the team’s desire to always try to work smarter and more efficiently. If you need something purchased, we’ll get it for you!

Hole In One For Western Cape

The 22nd May, 2014 saw the Western Cape Team once again hosting their customers for the Annual Western Cape Golf Day, at Devonvale Golf Estate. The good weather surprised most players, as they had typical Capetonian weather earlier in the week. The mystery alliance format had everyone buzzing and the scoring was a favourite topic of discussion for a brief moment, followed by team strategy. A good time was had by all.

AFS Ghana started discussions with Atlas Copco Ghana Limited on 17 May 2013 and their efforts are finally paying off. They were appointed as sole supplier of FML vehicles in March 2014. Sale and Leaseback was not an option for Atlas Copco Ghana Limited and it was agreed that they would start replacing their existing fleet in line with their budget forecast as well as the age of the vehicle based on

their replacement policy. The first of the deliveries took place on 30 April 2014 when they delivered 10 x Toyota units and two Mitsubishi Trucks. The total fleet for Atlas Copco in Ghana is currently about 45 units. - Giel Du Toit

Namibia Land Ministry Of Education HQ Contract

On the 13th May, 2014 Avis Fleet Services held yet another successful auction on its premises, each year this event gets bigger. For the last 6 consecutive years these auctions have proven to be a success and a big contributor to the Lesotho economy. The success of these auctions are not only brought about by a team of hardworking people in the business, but also by the quality of vehicles being auctioned off and the hordes of enthusiastic buyers, who know that Avis Fleet Services provides nothing but the best in quality service.

It’s been 15 years since Avis Fleet Services first presentation in 1999 to the Ministry of Basic Education and seven long years of tenders we have been allocated a total of 78 vehicles for the next three years at the Ministry of Education HQ. Twenty One of these vehicles were allocated to the Regional Council of Omusati Directorate Education and 19 to the Regional Council of Zambezi Regional Council Directorate Education. So we now have 118 of their potential 300 vehicles.. – Annemarie van der Riet

Well done to the Namibia Team on this great achievement!

Another Successful Auction Held In Lesotho

Training And Development

Diversi ty Beyond Menta lity

Over the past 33 years, Avis Fleet Services has recognised the long-term impact of embracing diversity within the company. Ronél Steyn, Training Manager, explains, “Characterising diversity a decade ago was based on the dimensions of race and gender. Today, it has evolved to include ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, religious or political beliefs, and disabilities. It is about understanding and accepting each other’s individual and inherent differences. Our strategic approach at Avis Fleet Services is to create a diverse workforce and nurture an accessible environment through learning opportunities such as learnerships, including people living with disabilities”

The current learnership is coming to an end at on 30 May 2014, however we are very excited to welcome a new group of 6 learners for the new “learnership year” who started their development on 5 May 2014. These candidates will complete their 4 month class room education on end user computing by end of August and then join the workplace for a further 8 months practical experience.

Page 16: Code Red 20

MManagement Development Programmes

Business demands are constantly changing and the need to develop our future leaders have become a strategic objective.

At Avis Fleet Services we have a philosophy of “lifelong learning” so we start developing leadership capabilities at Team Leader and Supervisory level. Fifteen candidates are entering the second phase of the Level 4, Management Certificate, training. We are very excited to have been able to include our own HPP 1, 2 and 3 courses into this learnership.

The Management Certificate with Fleet Management is coming to an end. Thirteen learners will be starting their final examinations during the first week of June. We wish them well and know that they will add a lot of value in the workplace with the newly acquired knowledge and skills.

BBarlowor ld International

Once again we are very proud of our nominees for the International Leadership Development Plan, Natalie Michael, Laura Friebe and Tracy Langston.

Two Senior Managers, Giles Knight and Shawn Govender are currently participating in the Executive Development Plan.

CConclusion

The growth of our business is evident in the renovations and expansions in floor space currently being experienced, but more so in seeing Induction Programmes now scheduled monthly with an average of 20 candidates per programme.

There is constantly a demand for specialised training to equip our employees to perform their roles more effectively and as the HR and Training Department we are committed to source the best possible learning opportunities to support these requirements.

AAccording to the Automobile AAssociation (AA) of South Africa , in order to make the roads safer, we all need to lead by example and be the safest of drivers . South Africa has one of the highest road death rates in the world with almost 32 deaths per 100 000 people, or 1200 people a month.

In order to reduce this alarming figure, every person on the road, including drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, needs to take responsibility for their own safety and that of others by following these essential road safety tips:

• Always wear a seatbelt and make sure that everyone in the car is wearing a seatbelt.

• Ensure that car seats for children are installed and used correctly.

• Never drink and drive. Statistics indicate that 50% of road deaths result from driving drunk.

• Driving while tired can be as dangerous as drunk driving so avoid driving if you are fatigued.

• If you are driving long distances, be sure to stop and refresh, relax, and stretch every two hours or 200km.

• Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists are the most vulnerable road users, so be aware of them and avoid them at all costs. Give them a wide berth and be aware that their behaviour can be unpredictable.

• Always wear safety equipment when riding a bicycle or motorcycle and follow the rules of the road. • Always obey the speed limit. • Avoid confrontation on the road. Stay calm and don’t shout, gesture, or intimidate other road users. • Change lanes only when it is safe and prudent to do so. • Avoid using your mobile phone while driving as it is illegal and extremely dangerous. • Ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy. • Service your vehicle at regular intervals, with an accredited workshop. • Do not allow yourself to be distracted by passengers, mobile phones, or anything external to the car such as

billboards. • Maintain a safe following distance of two seconds and keep a safe stopping distance. • If you break down, turn the hazard lights on immediately, move the car to safety out of the flow of traffic, and

don’t get out of the car unless it is safe to do so. Call for professional help. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and we can only ensure that we are all safe on the roads if we all obey the rules of the road and drive safely, courteously, and carefully. Your life is your first priority; practise road safety. –www.healthins ite.net

HHow to reset after a binge

There’s something very satisfying in the discipline and dedication to eating healthy, portion-controlled meals. And, of course, seeing the results of it. But, as South Africans, we tend to take advantage of public holidays, sporting season and endless summer days, where socialising until the sun goes down is almost mandatory. And then you feel terrible. The “I’ll-need-to-starve-for-a-week-to-undo-this” kind of terrible. But all is not lost. It’s easy to get back on track.

How to feel good again It just makes sense, now that you’ve packed in a bit extra on the eating front, to balance this with a bit of extra exercise or physical activity. Avoid starving yourself to counteract the effects of the binge. This could hurt you more in the long run, as your metabolism is likely to slow down in response. If you get too hungry, there’s also a risk that you may end up binging again in protest!

So what should you eat? Don’t go all Starvin’ Marvin on us. It will make you feel worse. Stick to the foods that you would normally eat on a good day. Remember that you’re trying to programme your body to adapt to a well- balanced, sustainable way of eating. Binging and then starving yourself confuses your body and prevents it from reaching a comfortable equilibrium.

Focus on regular meals and snacks throughout the day and include food from all the major food groups: carbohydrates, fats and protein.

Tip: Drink plenty of fluids (preferably of the natural H20 variety).

Get sufficient fibre, vitamins and minerals from wholegrains, fruit, vegetables, dairy and lean protein (including fish) and pay special attention to your omega 3 intake.

Tip: Read the food labels carefully, because if something is labelled as being low fat it can often mean that it’s relatively high in sugar.

Remember: Added sugar excludes the sugars that occur naturally in fruit, vegetables and dairy. It refers to table sugar, honey, molasses, fructose corn-syrup extracts and any other high-calorie sweeteners used in processed foods and beverages.

Sweat i t out! We know that the last thing you feel like doing is getting into your gym clothes (which now seem to feel “tighter” than they did a few days ago), but not only will exercise be good for you physically, it’ll also put your mind at ease. If you know that you’ve worked out, you’ll be less likely to relapse or continue beating yourself up for going off track.

Say goodbye to binging Sticking to your fitness routine can stop you from repeating the vicious cycle known as binge eating. If you can see your weekend or holiday has been one bad step after another, try and get active as soon as you can. Go for a walk on the beach, hit the zoo with the kids or go back to gym. Just make sure you get going. Pronto! –www.virginactive.co.za
