I have been living in Miramar Peninsula (Te Motu Kairangi) in Wellington since 2016 and before that I lived for almost 15 years in Greytown.

I work in 2D, mainly acrylic and watercolour. I have exhibited in many group exhibitions at Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art & History, and am currently showing my work at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington. I had a solo exhibition called ‘Opportunity’ in 2013 at Aratoi, won an award in an early Wai Art exhibition and a Friends of Aratoi Art Award in 2013. My work can be seen at Aratoi; Kotare Arts Studio, Greytown; and Alfred Memelink Artspace Gallery, Petone. I have a painting in the collection of Aratoi, and work in private collections throughout New Zealand.

This painting is from a series done while living in Wairarapa, celebrating Greytown’s unique heritage in in a fresh, lighthearted way. I’m still very interested in recording ‘place’ (both physical and interior worlds), and drawing on location regularly with ‘urban sketchers’ in Wellington has fed into my recent work. Drawing is the route that takes me from observation to that joyful space of imagination and expression. My work is on Instagram: annetaylor5692.

I have been living in Greytown with Peter since 1988. We “weekended” at first and then for the past 10 years this has been our full time home.

I work in watercolour and pen and wash and over the years I have attended classes in Wellington and with Masterton Art Club and Wai Art. I have exhibited and sold in Featherston, Greytown, Carterton and Masterton.

My greeting cards are on sale at Aratoi and have sold from various other outlets.

About this work

Edition 1/1 was exhibited at 30 Upstairs, Wellington, 2013 and at Sanderson Gallery ‘local’ end of year 2011. Important note: The work is presented unframed, it should be framed in a 20mm square black timber frame (no glass) with a backing board. Nothing should be fixed to the back of the work as it will show through on the work (this is why it is unsigned – I am happy to sign once it is framed.

My works are all noted as untitled – this is because I like the viewer to have their own interpretation. What sparked the idea for this work was the Christchurch earthquakes. Being born in Christchurch, I wanted to create a quiet response to issues Christchurch has been facing. The ‘Square’ was the heart of Christchurch. Conveniently, the square was a repeating motif I use in my work.

The repeating image, seemingly going to infinity, is created using images from one of my mirror and light works as a lenticular print. Red is the colour of Christchurch. They say you should put some red in your life when you want Increased enthusiasm and interest; more energy; action and confidence to go after your dreams; protection from fears and anxieties.

Jan Eagle, who died in 2018, was born in Greytown to Jack and Stella Bull in 1936 and was well known for her efforts in revitalising Greytown’s historic Stella Bull Park and Sarah’s Garden.

She was an established Wairarapa artist, having painted for as long as she could remember. Jan Eagle

was a supporter of Aratoi and the former Wairarapa Arts Centre.

Jan held solo exhibitions titled ‘The Urban Provider’ [2007], ‘Space to Space’ [2009] and ‘Heavenly Communications’ [2014] at Aratoi. Her work was a celebration of life: bright, quirky and full of meaning.

I was born in the North of England in a small coal mining and cotton mill town in Lancashire where my childhood escape as far back as I can remember was my pencils and paper. I spent countless hours sketching anything that caught my imagination and interest. As a teenager as much as I wanted to pursue my art it was never considered an option back then as a serious career.

Arriving in New Zealand as a sixteen year old with my passion on hold I immediately started work and my education was put aside until I was able to focus on what I wanted to do. During this time I dabbled in oils and enjoyed the richness and flexibility they offered.

Years later, having married and raised a family and having a passion for working with people, I moved to the Hawke’s Bay to work in mental health and also with the intention of returning to my first passion of painting. At this time I was introduced to acrylics and found they suited my style of painting. I have been inspired by the beauty of the Bay and its wealth of talented artists. I am now at a time of life where I can explore my passion and gain inspiration for my paintings from our wonderful environment. I am also inspired by the beautiful West Coast of NZ,

‘Taking a moment’LINDA EAGLEAcrylic on boxed canvas610 mm x 460 mm

the rugged colours and textures of Western Australia and our own native birdlife and wildlife.

I see a composition in every observation as I travel from day to day around our beautiful country and the pleasure I have in transferring this to canvas is immeasurable and to have people find enjoyment in my work is the icing on the cake and my hope is that people feel the same emotion from my work as I do in producing it.

I am currently a full time grandmother to two beautiful little girls and although my life has changed due to their needs, my love of painting remains a passion.

My desire is to grow old with eyesight intact and paintbrush in hand!
