GREYTOWN water con-sumers who, in October,receivedamostpolitere-quest from the Umziny-athi Municipal Managerto promptly pay so calledoutstanding exorbi-tant thumbsuck balan-
ces, should continue notto do so.
A couple of weeks ago,a Greytown lawyerwrote to the MM on be-half of the many waterconsumers who hadlodged complaints with
the Greytown Gazette,on the paperlessamounts being claimed,
The lawyer verypolitely requestedthat these debits bereversed and “pleaserevert to us by
return”.But alas and alack, de-
spite a reminder, thelawyer has not evenreceived an acknowl-edgment that hisletter has been received– not even the normal
polite response of “thematter is being investi-gated”.
So water consumerscontinue as youhave – just paythe current monthlyamount.
No response whatsoever

NOVEMBER’S rainfall of 120.6 was wel-come – the third highest in the last sevenyears and just above the 40 year mean of110.3.
Stats kept by Pannar Research show the120mm’s took some time to accumulate –16.8 recorded on 9 November, 15.6 on15 November and 12.6 on 27 November– and lots of drips and drizzles in bet-
ween.According to the 40 year mean issued by
Ram Bagdath of Pannar, the highest in thepast sevenyearswasawhopping211.3mmin 2007/08 and the lowest of 88.7 was in2009/10.
In Greytown itself, Grant Gifford record-ed 153mm forNovember, much appreciat-ed by gardeners, if not sportsmen and
women. There were some fair scorchers during
the month – top temp was 38.72 on 14November, 37.13 on 5November, 36.29 on6 November and bottom of the maximumscale, 13.43 on 28 November.
Lowest minimums were 8.71 on 3November and 8.97 on 18 Novem-ber.

PAIRS of binoculars and field guides were essentialequipment on Saturday, as various groups of birders–fromnovicetoadvanced– setoutonHermannsburg'sBirding Big Day trying to spot, identify and record asmany species of bird as possible.
This contributes to the annual Birding Big Day sur-vey, which forms a sort of census for birds across thecountry. The smell of fresh baking wafted from theboarding establishment as some of the boarders notout spotting birds, took the opportunity to bake Adventcookies. The trips to spot birds alternated with choirpractices, as the school choir prepared for the Adventservice in the Peter–Paul church on Sunday. Friendsand family swelled the ranks of the congregation aswe celebrated the start of the new church year, withthe choir leading the singing from the gallery and alovely solo performance by Kerstin Mahnecke.

FINDING Father Christmas is almost im-possible, but that is exactly what the chil-dren of the Little Oaks' Kindergarten didon Friday morning.
Uncle Rainer came with the tractor anda big trailer and took us all for a long rideto see if we could spot Father Christmas.
We had to ask lots of people on the way,but nobody could help us. Finally, at the
church, we spotted something red andwhite and sure enough, Father Christmaswas there.
We had a jolly, jolly time, singing Christ-mas carols and having our photographstaken with him.
He also joined us on the tractor ride backto the kindergarten and brought us all alittle present.

TRIBUTE TO BARRY LAMBIT was with great sadness that St David’s heard about the death of Barry Lamb, chairman
of the school council for the past 14 years. He had been closely associated with the school since 1998, first as a member of the finance
committee, then as bursar and secretary and chairman.Barry always took a great interest in the development and progress of the school. He showed
special concern for the welfare of the pupils and was genuinely interested in each child asan individual, taking great pride in their achievements. He visited the school regularly andprovided huge support to the staff. With his wisdom, knowledge and business acumen heguided the school safely through uncertain times to its current well–established position inthe community.
We will all miss his constant input and dry sense of humour. Our thoughts and prayersare with Jill and the family at this sad time.

FOR those who were born in the month ofDecember, the Turquoise is the traditionalbirthstone. Its properties are associatedwith prosperity, success, happiness andgood fortune. The traditional metaphysical propertiesinclude open communication, protectionagainst all diseases, regeneration and thehealing properties are reputed to be effec-tive for health problems relating to thethroat, lungs, asthma, teeth, depressionand infection.TheTurquoise is also used to enhance cre-ativity, serenity and spiritual bonding. It isfound in Iran, the United States, Africa,Australia, Siberia and Europe.
The traditional color associatedwith thegem ranges from sky blue to blue green, through various shades of green, and wasstrongly favoredasapopular gem inVicto-rian jewelry. The meaning of colors through the agesrepresented many aspects of life. Social, religious, biblicalandChristiansymbolismwere all reflected in the color turquoise. The symbolic meaning of the color tur-quoise represents the life cycle of birth, oldage and death, due to its ability to changecolor with ageing.
The twelveZodiac signs are anastrologi-cal version of birthstones, in addition to thetwelve calendar months.TheDecemberbirthstoneTurquoise iscon-sidered to be the birthstone for Sagittarius(the sign of theArcher) and relates to thosebornbetween23Novemberand21Decem-ber. The Zodiac sign of Sagittarius also re-sponds to Topaz, Beryl, Blue Topaz, BlueZircon, Ruby, Lapis Lazuli and Citrine. The firstDecemberbirth flower is thePoin-settia which equals celebration, success, reassurance and good cheer. Also knownas theMexican flame leaf orChristmas staror Noche Buena, the poinsettia, is a plantknownfor itsstrikingreddisplaysatChrist-mas time (in the northern hemisphere). It isoftenusedasa floralChristmasdecora-tionbecauseof its festivecolors.Poinsettiasare native to southern Mexico and centralAmerica, where they may reach heights ofsixteen feet. They are named after JoelRoberts Poinsett, the first United Statesambassador to Mexico who introduced theplant in America in 1825.
AMexican legend explains how poin-settias came to be associated with Christ-mas. Apparently, a child who could not af-ford a gift to offer to Christ on ChristmasEve, picked some weeds from the side of
a road. The child was told that a humblegift, if given in love, would be acceptablein God’s eyes.Whenbrought into the church, theweeds
bloomed intoredandgreen flowersandthecongregation felt they had witnessed aChristmas miracle.
The Aztec Indians prize poinsettias andconsidered them a symbol of purity be-causeof theirbrilliantredcolor.Theymadea reddish–purple dye from the colored“flowers”, which are actually modifiedleaves called bracts.Theyalsomadeamedicineagainst fevers
from the latex sap of the plant. The “birth flowers” are actually largebunches of colored leaves – the flowersthemselves are in the center of each leafbunch, but rather small and inconspicu-ous.
Narcissus is the second December birthflower and is said to represent formality, sweetness, self admiration and egotism.Narcissus is the Latin name for a group ofhardy, mostly spring–flowering, bulbs. The name is derived from the Greek mythof Narcissus who fell in love with his ownreflection in a stream.Transfixed by the stream, the gods be-lieved he would die of starvation so theychanged him into the flower to stay thereforever.

St Cathryn’s news
WHEN one thinks of the colours of racingpigeons, one thinks that all pigeons areblue bar or blue chequers – definitelythese colours are in the main, but othercolours can and do win races.
The blue bar pigeon is a slatey grey/blue colour with two darker bars on eachwing. A blue bar mated to a blue bar willonly produce blue bar offspring and noother colour, except maybe a white flightor two.
White is a recessive and cannot be bredout, although it may lay dormant for afew generations and suddenly reappear.Sometimes a white tic appears behindthe eye, this is always a hen.
Blue chequers are blue pigeons withdarker plumage and the tips of the feath-ers are black tipped giving a chequeredappearance. Blue chequers mated to-gether will produce blue chequers cocksand hens and blue bar cocks and hens.
The colour mealey is the red colour ver-sion of the blue bar. The mating of twomealeys will produce mealey cocks andhens and blue bar hens (no blue cocks).
Red chequer is similar to blue chequerwith the body being a slatey colour andfeathers coloured with red. The matingof two red chequers will produce redchequer cocks and hens, mealey cocksand hens and blue chequer cocks andhens.
