PRESIDENT’S LETTER Mary Goodman

IT’S SPRING! The bees are buzzing and the applique flowers are budding out! Spring is a beautiful time for renewal, for finishing up those old projects and beginning the new ones. One of the new projects that has begun in our guild is the 2016 Quilt Show Committee. Our grateful thanks go out to Susie Doe, Lisa Patterson, Pam Biswas, Allison Etzler, and of course Julie Dayton who bravely volun-teered to coordinate the Coordinators. These lovely ladies met for the first planning session this last week, along with myself and President Elect Barb Wall. As we start the process of preparing for the work of the Show, I hope that all of you will begin thinking how you want to participate. As anyone will tell you from the 2014 Quilt Show, it was wonderful and new friends were made all around!

One of the ways you can begin right now is to think about what quilt you want to make for the On Line Auction and what quilt will be donated to the Silent Auction (or Small Quilt Auction). Whenev-er you donate a quilt, I hope you will think about what quilt would best represent YOU. What quilt would you be proud to send to the On Line Auction? What quilt is so well done that we would have to put a large reserve on? What wonderful small quilt with gold thread and shiny crystals would you put in the Small Quilt Auction? Think about things that are eye-catching, things that people who don’t quilt would be drawn to and would love to have. These are not throw-aways! These are what we sent out into our community. Let’s send out the best of us! We all share a beautiful talent with needle and thread. Make it count! You have exactly 18 months to make those quilts! Make them your best!

It’s Spring! Start a new, beautiful project for the 2016 Quilt Show!

LIBRARY Linda Towle

Did you enjoy Deb Karasik’s trunk show? Are you ready to make one of her gorgeous quilts? Deb donated her book, Quilts with Attitude to our library. If you don’t think you are ready to tackle one of her complicated quilts, she has several easy projects to get you started. There is a pattern for placemats, a table topper and several small wall hangings.

Do you have a collection of fat quarters or charm packs? We have two more recently donated books that you might want to borrow. One is More Loose Change, 14 Quilts from Nickels, Dimes, and Fat Quarters. The other is 256 Fat Quarter Quilt Blocks.

Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild

Minutes of the January 6, 2015 Board Meeting

(Approved at February 3, 2015 Board Meeting)

The meeting was called to order by Mary Goodman, President, at 1:32 p.m. at the Keegan’s Woods Com-

munity Building.

Board Members in attendance: Mary Goodman, Barbara Wall, Rebecca Trevino, Barbara Young, Barba-

ra Baxter, Susie Doe, Linda Towle, Katherine Onstott, Martha Baldwin, and Trena Stephens. A quorum

was present. Committee members in attendance: Lisa Patterson and Cheryl Jacobs.

The Minutes of the December 2, 2014 Board Meeting were approved as presented.

The January 2014 Treasurer’s Report was approved as presented with one minor change. The donation

from the Appliqué Society will be categorized differently; 50% will be recorded as a donation to Quilts of

Valor and 50% as a donation to the Linus Project under Charity Quilts.

Announcements by Mary Goodman –

Mary thanked Julie Dayton and her committee for a successful job in planning and hosting our Decem-

ber holiday meetings. She commended Barbara Baxter for a wonderful Quilts of Valor presentation at

the December day meeting.

Mary announced that the guild members donated $80 to FUMC’s Seafarer’s Project.

Mary reported that she had contacted Sidney Caver of Houston’s Friendship Force. Guild members who

Volume 7, Issue 7 Page 12

wish to participate are asked to fill out a short biographical information form so that they may be paired

with an international quilter. Correspondents will have the opportunity to meet their pen pal at a lunch-

eon in October. (See attached copy of e-mail correspondence between Mary Goodman and Sidney Cav-

er.)

Scholarship Report – Barbara Baxter reported that she had found only one school in Texas with a fiber

arts program (in Denton). Cheryl Jacobs suggested that the Art Institute of Houston might be another

option. The board will continue to look into the logistics of offering a scholarship.

OLD BUSINESS

The Bee Hive – Lisa Patterson presented a summary of the results of her bee survey (see attach-

ment). There seems to be plenty of interest; the most favored bee topics are ‘Block of the Month’, ‘Scrap

Quilting’, ‘Appliqué’, and ‘Paper-Piecing’. The next step is to contact those who agreed to become bee

leaders (Queen Bees) to verify their commitment and set schedules.

Member Survey -- Barbara Wall announced she is in the process of collating the surveys turned in

in December. Unfortunately a number of respondents forgot to fill in the back side of their surveys. A

couple of other problems with the survey were identified – the age question ‘freaked out’ a lot of people

and the survey neglected to ask for respondent’s name if they agreed to volunteer for something. Main

take-away from surveys turned in to date is that members seem to be happy with the programs on offer.

Barbara will have a full report ready for the February board meeting.

BOARD REPORTS

President-Elect -- Barbara Wall Nothing to report.

VP-Programs – Barbara Young

Connie Silber will present a Trunk Show at the evening meeting on January 7. Lisa Erlandson is

scheduled for the January day meeting. February’s speakers will be Karen Lambdin and Deb Karasik.

Barbara asked that Mary remind everyone about the change in April’s evening meeting date; it will be on

the second Wednesday instead of first Wednesday (FUMC asks us not to meet during Holy Week).

Membership – Rebecca Trevino

200 copies of the membership directory are being printed and will be ready for distribution at the

January day meeting.

Secretary – Susie Doe Nothing to report.

Treasurer -- Linda Towle

Linda cleared up Susie Doe’s question about the previous month’s report on the Fall Festival.

$200 was withdrawn from the account as seed money for the bazaar. A total of $943.75 was deposited

after the bazaar; this represents $200 seed money and $743.75 in bazaar proceeds.

Workshop Chairman – Barbara Baxter

16 members are currently signed up for the January workshop, “Quilt Design by the Seat of Your

Pants” by Lisa Erlandson (cost $15). The workshop in February by Deb Karasik, is a paper-pieced wall

hanging called “Turning over a New Leaf”’; the cost is $40 (class + kit fee). Currently 9 members have

registered.

Editor/Advertising – Jennifer Pazicni (absent) No report.

Representative-at-Large – Trena Stephens Nothing to report.

Program Chair-Elect – Katherine Onstott

A committee will meet next week to work on programs for 2015-16. The board discussed a pro-

posed speaker for August 18th, 2016; this date will be the day quilts are to be turned in for our 2016

Quilt Show, so it was decided that we would not engage a speaker for that day. Katherine requested and

received the board’s approval to engage Barbara Henning as a speaker; we would be able to share costs

with another guild. Katherine had received information from Candy Horsley that Judy Taylor and Karen

Blocher (our 2014 Quilt Show judges) would be available to speak at our November 4th meeting and that

travel & lodging costs would be minimal as they are coming in for Quilt Festival at that time and would

also like to stay with Candy. The board approved these speakers.

Workshop Chair-Elect – Martha Baldwin Nothing to report.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Quilts of Valor -- Barbara Baxter

Barbara reported that one of our quilts was presented to a Mr. Perez in El Paso recently. There is a pho-

to on the Quilts of Valor website.

The December Sew-In was a great success with 14 people (2 new participants) in attendance. The next

Sew-In will be on January 24th at Quilter’s Cottage from 10 am – 3 pm.

Barbara reported on Quilts of Valor’s new program of partnering with organizations and individuals who

help them with their mission to provide quilts for soldiers and veterans. Organizations, such as the guild,

can register as partner members for a fee of $30 annually; one benefit to the guild would be the ability to

man a Quilts of Valor booth with our members rather than having to rely on a Quilts of Valor representa-

tive. Additionally individual guild members may register as members for a $5 fee. Trena Stephens

moved that the guild enter into a partnership agreement with Quilts of Valor and pay the $30 annual fee;

the board approved unanimously. Barbara Baxter will send in the appropriate paperwork and collect in-

dividual memberships (payable to Quilts of Valor) to accompany our application. (See the attached

Quilts of Valor ‘Letter of Agreement for Existing Non-Profit Groups’ for further information).

Barbara reported that she had received two separate donations during the month of December (one for

$200 and one for $500) to the guild’s Quilts of Valor project.

Activities – Julie Dayton (absent) No report.

Fall Festival – No report.

Bee Keeper – Lisa Patterson

Report listed under ‘Old Business’ above.

Community Service Report – Candy Horsley (absent)

Barbara Young reported that Chris Ginkens has opened ‘Quilt Your Own’ for a charity quilting day

on February 9 from 10 am - 4 pm. She will continue to offer the use of her long-arm machines every oth-

er month (the ‘off’ months will be for the use of the Greater Houston Guild). There was a question asked

about who would be providing the thread for the quilting.

Donation Quilt -- Cheryl Jacobs

Cheryl is ready to order tickets for the 2015 Donation Quilt; the price is ~ $86. The board ap-

proved the purchase. The drawing date will remain the December day meeting (12/17/2015). The sched-

ule for showings is being prepared. Pauline Manes has suggested adding the showings schedule to our

website so that members will have easy access. It was decided that we would show the quilt during

March Shop Hop this year at Quilter’s Cottage instead of Quilter’s Emporium.

Volume 7, Issue 7 Page 13

Volume 7, Issue 7 Page 14

Guild Guides / Hospitality – Rita Evans / Allison Etzler (absent) No reports.

Librarian -- Linda Towle Nothing to report.

Web Administrator – Pauline Manes (absent)

Mary Goodman stated that Pauline has asked board members to please remember to use the mail-

boxes that have been set up for them through the website to ensure that they are read and that they will

become the standard to help ensure continuity as board members change.

Parliamentarian – Trena Stephens

The Bylaws Review committee was officially approved by the membership at the December gen-

eral meeting. The committee plans to meet this month and have its recommendations ready for the

March board meeting.

The question has come up whether it would be better for the guild to run its fiscal year in accord-

ance with a calendar year rather than from September through August. The board asked the committee

to look into what changes would need to be made to the Bylaws to make such as change.

Retreats – Sandi Pedersen (absent) No report.

Show and Share -- Carol Kettlewell (absent) No report.

There being no other business to come before the board the meeting was adjourned at 3:02 pm.

Respectfully submitted by Susie Doe, Secretary

Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild of Texas

Business Meeting Minutes for February 19, 2015

Meeting was called to order by President Mary Goodman.

Minutes of the last general business were approved as posted

Barbara Wall gave a summary report on the recent Member Survey; full report will be available in the upcoming newsletter.

Mary reminded everyone that due to a schedule conflict our night meeting in April will be held on the second Wednesday evening (April 8th) rather than on April 1.

Barbara Baxter announced that the next Quilts of Valor Sew-In will be on February 21 (10 am – 3 pm) at Quilter’s Cottage. The guild is joining the National Quilts of Valor organization as a partner (for a $30 annual fee). Individual members may join Quilts of Valor for $5.
