Programs!

Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild Of Texas

It’s officially spring! I really like this time of year, except for all the yellow pollen floating around everywhere. Days are getting longer. Trees and other plants are awash with the vibrant colors of new growth. Then there are the brilliant displays of our incredible Texas wildflowers. At the ranch, we have 3 baby calves and at least one new pair of twin deer fawns. Guess this is Mother Nature’s way of start-ing fresh each year, and I find myself with a little more energy to try something new, too. I probably should be doing some spring cleaning, but there’s this whole stash of fabric, sitting in my sewing room, just waiting to be turned it into something spectacular, and besides, I’ve really got to get busy on those quilt show entries. Who has time for housework! And, speaking of starting over, this month we begin the process of putting together the slate of officers for our August board elections by selecting a nominating committee. There will be several openings on the board, and I ask that you consider running for a position. We are extremely fortunate to have a group of very committed volun-teers, who keep the guild running smoothly, but there is always room for more people to participate in the process. And, if you have ideas for ways to improve how things are running, the most positive way to bring about those changes is to get involved. If you cannot take on a board position, we’re going to need 4 members to serve on the Nomi-nating Committee. If you’ve got any questions about serving on the board, or committee, or would like to volunteer for a position, please contact me, or any current board member.

Happy Spring! Barb

Amendment to By-Laws to allow a board vote to be taken, via e-mail, under specific circum-

stances.

Addition of Article VI, Section 6.2

(Current Section 6 would become Section 6.1)

In the event that circumstance do not permit the convening of a special board meeting, such as

in the case of a time sensitive matter, the President may call for a vote of the board via email,

using the following procedure:

The President contacts all voting board members using guild provided email addresses and/

or personal email addresses as listed in the most current version of the Membership Di-

rectory or as provided to the Director of Membership.

Members must respond to the original email within 48 hours of the notice being sent.

The vote will only be considered valid if a quorum of the board members respond within the

Quilt Show News This month, we will begin signing up volunteers for all aspects of the show,

and there’s certainly something for every member to do. Here’s a few of the

many areas with which you can help:

Quilt Check-in (Aug. 18)

Quilt photography (week of Aug. 22)

Quilt Judging (scribes and quilt movers-Aug. 30-31)

Set-up (Quilt Hanging, Decorations, Ribbons & Labels, etc.- Sept. 8)

Day-of (Ticket Sales, Online or Small Quilt Auctions, Make & Take, etc.-Sept. 9-10)

Take Down & Quilt Check-out (Sept. 10)

Sign-up sheets for these and all the areas where help is needed will be available at guild meet-

ings beginning on April 6. It takes a huge number of volunteer hours to make our show a suc-

cess, so we ask that everyone take on at least one job. The earlier you sign up, the better the

chance of getting where and when you want.

The next meeting of the full show committee will be Saturday, April 16, 10 a.m. at the Univer-

sity Branch Library. All show chairpersons are urged to attend.

There’s only about 3 months until your entry forms are due, so keep working on those show

quilts. Rules & Regulations, category descriptions and entry forms are all available on the

website.

Quilt Happy!

Quilt Show News By Barbara Wall/Lisa Patterson

187 Blankets, 41 pillowcases, 17 pillows, and 110 quilts have been donated to our charities so far this

year. Thanks to everyone that donated to community service this past month:

Judy Kohn Shirley Grover Gwen Goldsberry Elisabeth Barrow

Kay Tanner Sharon Tusa Barbara Penning Dianna Firestone

Julie Dayton Nancie Roach Barbara Baxter Sakeenah Mubashshir

Mary Lou Cooper Helen Wilems China Oiler

As a side note: My community service coordinator position will become available this September.

When I signed up for this committee position, I agreed to do it for one year. (I am now the proud owner

of a Community Service dining room at this point in time!) It's been a very rewarding and wonderful

experience. CPQG always ask our members to become involved, and this position has shown me just

how generous and involved our members are. Please take the time to consider volunteering to take on

this very worthwhile position next year. Come talk to me at one of our meetings, call or email me and I

will be more than happy to answer any questions. September will be here before we know it!

REMINDER

We're getting low on UPC's!!

Please remember to clip the UPCs from the bags of Hobbs batting that you purchase and bring them to

the next guild meeting. Every UPC that's donated saves the guild money.

2016 is racing by and as we enter April, I want to remind you that we need Online Auction quilts for the Quilt Show. I currently have 8 in my possession, and we need a lot more. I’m working hard to capture the personality of your quilts in a photo shoot and write-up session tailored to each individ-ual entry. You may turn them in to me at the evening meetings, or Lisa Patterson at the day meet-ings. If you need a special pickup arranged, send me an email at [email protected] and we’ll ar-range a time/location.

Some books recently added to our library include: Backyard Bird Quilts by Jodie Davis (18 pa-

per pieced projects), Hop To It! Appliqued Blocks and Projects by Edyta Sitar (12 blocks, 8 pro-

jects, easy applique techniques), Pint-Sized Traditions by Lynette Jensen (19 small quilts), and

Quilts Through the Seasons by Eleanor Burns (a quilt for each month of the year). I’ll bring

these new books to the next couple of meetings. Check them out!!

A couple of helpful hints as you work on your quilts for the upcoming quilt show.

Put all used/broken needles and pins in an empty Tic Tac container or old prescription container...

you can see what's in it, then, when it's filled, tape over the opening before discarding. An old pre-

scription container can also be used.

When you finish making a quilt, use some of the scrap fabrics to make a "pillow case" for the quilt to

be stored in when it's not in use. You can even make a zipper closing so that the quilt can't escape.

The zippered pillow case acts as a dust cover, but the scrap fabrics help identify what's inside. If the

quilt should need repairs, the fabric from the dust cover can be used.

Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild Minutes of the February 2, 2016 Board Meeting

(Approved at the March 1, 2016 Board Meeting)

The meeting was called to order by Barbara Wall, President, at 1:30 p.m. at the Keegan’s Woods Commu-nity Building.

Board members in attendance: Barbara Wall, Helen Wilems, Barbara Elliott, Pauline Manes, Susie Doe, Lisa Patterson, Debbie Garner and Barbara Young. A quorum was present. Committee members in at-tendance: Julie Dayton, Judy Wolter and Barbara Baxter.

The Minutes of the January 5, 2016 Board Meeting were approved as presented. The Treasurer’s Report for January (reporting through January 27, 2016) was approved as presented.

PRESIDENT’S ANNOUNCEMENTS Guild Guides Update - Rita Evans is unable to continue acting as the Guild Guides chairperson. Carol Ann Barley will take over handing out the information packets to new members as they join the guild.

OLD BUSINESS

Donation Quilts – Tickets for 2016 Quilt (Barb) -- 4000 tickets have been purchased from Schulenberg Printing at a cost of $87. A new travel bag for the donation quilt has been purchased to replace the old bag which was worn, had no wheels, and was too small to handle this year’s quilt.

2017 Quilt Design (Lisa Patterson/Debbie Garner) – Lisa and Debbie reported that the design for the 2017 Donation Quilt was well received by the membership. Currently 60 packets have been signed out and about a dozen blocks have been returned.

Committee Chair Job Descriptions – Barbara Wall was unable to present a report of committee job descriptions due to a computer snafu; the board will review the report next month.

NEW BUSINESS

Interpretation of Non-Solicitation Rule – The board discussed once again how the guild should handle requests from entities wishing to solicit donations from quilt members or disseminate in-formation relevant to quilting. In general it was agreed that information relevant to quilting, such as dates for other guild shows, can be included in the newsletter and on the relevant page on the website. Commercial concerns wishing to relay information (such as, opening of new shops, non-guild workshops, etc.) should be asked to place an advertisement in the newsletter or web-site. Generally, requests for donations from quilt members for items (e.g. quilts, pillowcases, toys, etc.) should be handled by Community Service. Announcement of such requests should be handled via the newsletter, website, or announcements at meeting; no special e-mails should be sent for these requests. However, if a situation, such as a natural disaster occurs, which would require expedited handling, the board should be allowed to vote outside of board meetings on such issues and if approved an e-mail may be sent to the membership. It was suggested that the Bylaws review committee should look into the matter of updating Article VI, Section 6, to allow for by e-mail/phone voting by the board on certain special time-critical issues such as this.

Committee Positions – Activities & Bazaar Activities – The board agreed that the Activities Committee position should be left open until the

end of this fiscal year. Bazaar – The board voted to discontinue the guild’s participation in FUMC’s annual Fall Festival

Bazaar. The church has said that they now have enough booths for the festival and that our par-ticipation is no longer necessary. The board agreed that the booth registration fee will be added to

our regular FUMC donation amount in future. New Member Welcome – The board chose April 13th as the date for the next new member wel-

come. Helen Wilems will contact the church to see if a room would be available on this date. Invi-tations will be mailed out during the 3rd week in March. The date will be announced in the March and April newsletters. Barbara Elliott will e-mail invitees a weekly notice beginning 3 weeks beforehand, with a final notice to go out on Monday, April 11th.
