Appreciation Award to Garrett Edens Alumni Association

The members of the Alumni Association

recognize that the last several years have

been trying ones for the Chapter and for

the Alumni Association. They further

recognize that Garrett Edens has done a

stellar job of leading all of us through

these times. Garrett has gone above and

beyond the call of duty in sacrificing

time and resources away from his

business and personal life and to SAE

and the Alumni Association. It was for

this reason that Bill “Wildman” Myers

suggested and expedited the plaque that

Danny Gregg presented to Garrett at the

Fortieth Anniversary gathering.

Thank you Garrett!

GOLF TOURNAMENT AND

OUTING 2010

VOLUME 6, ISSUE 1

We will do all this again at our upcoming 2nd Annual

Sigma Alpha Epsilon Golf tournament which will be

held the weekend of April 30th. We are planning a

gathering at Danny Greggs home on the evening of the

29th. Golf will begin at 8 am the following morning at

the course that is TBD. After the golf tournament we

will have BBQ Catered at the Tailgate behind Doug

Kingsmore stadium which we will also have Live Band

and Beer available. Last year the tailgate lasted about

4.5 hrs and I suspect it will be just as much fun! Look

for the big SAE Tent. Our Charity will again be for

Helens Hugs which was so close to Nick Corontzes

heart, so we will be donating in his memory. After the

tailgate those who choose to attend the baseball game

that night will do so and others will continue to tailgate

with the night ending at the Esso club. Last year we had

a great turn out and we anticipate a much larger turnout

this year so Register early to secure your spot. Consider

sponsoring a four man team for $360.00. We will be

looking for $175.00 hole sponsors as well.

Please send your team name and members with a check made out to: SCNU Alumni Association

Daughter of Marvin Caughman Doing Wonders in Haiti

I attended weekend festivities centered around the mar-riage of David and Jean McLean's youngest daughter, Lesley Jean to Chase Watson, also of Cheraw, SC.

The marriage took place on July 31st at 5:30 pm and the reception ensued. As the night ( and spirits ) grew I noticed a circle of dancers that included the Bride and her mother in a lively exchange. From my vantage point at the bar, I was David's bar manager, I caught Sunshine making his way to the group, as he approached he went to his knees and crawled into the middle of the circle, he then flipped over on his back and did the best rendition of ' the dying cockroach ' that I've see since the classic film Animal House. And remember Shine had his left knee replaced in January.

He would have made all his NS/SAE Brothers proud. As the head Barman and personally responsible for Shines liquid refreshment I can assure you that he was not over-served, but caught up in the moment !

In the words of one of my Numeral Society Brothers..." a good time was had by all.”

know that Sara is doing mission work

down there. He correctly assumed that

lots of us would be interested in what she

is learning. “I am very proud of her.” I

think we are all amazed at what wonder-

ful things (children) have come out of

such a rowdy bunch! Check out Sara’s

blog www.saragoestohaiti.com.

We are also sad to report that Marvin’s

wife and Sara’s mother, Sally, passed

away this summer. Sally was a very ac-

tive and successful businesswoman and

volunteer in service to her community,

church, college, and many other causes

for many years.

The children in Haiti gives a thumbs up to Sara

Caughman as well.

Daughter, Grace married in June to Bayne Parsons,

good old Pickens county boy; expecting their first

child, a boy in April. Bayne is flying helicopters in

Iraq and Afghanistan and we are very proud of him;

Grace has got her masters in nursing and is an Army

nurse. Brother Dave is still chasing women, but is

limiting his pursuit to Beverly, his wife, in lieu of

severe repercussions. In my downtime am serving as

State Chairman of the Rocky Mountain Elk

Foundation- helping to reintroduce elk herds to the

eastern states- if you get a chance, take your family

to see the rut at Cherokee National Forest, NC. It

normally occurs the last two weeks in September.

Chuck Huntley ’73—Sally and I took a bike

tour in Italy in October. We rode through the

vineyards and beautiful scenery along the Adri-

atic coast in the Abruzzo region and the ancient

city of Rome. While we were there, the

Pope canonized six different people from

around the world.

This was one of the most incredible things I

saw in Italy: this mime would only move if

you put money in the bucket; otherwise you

would think this to be a statue. I also thought

this to be ironic as I think most people attracted

to this mime could relate to the situation.

Greek-Life Flap Successfully Resolved, CU Administration Reaffirms Greek Support

Earlier this semester, in the days leading up to the Homecoming weekend, you may have heard about some issues and concerns related to the Greek community at Clemson. The issues involved underage drinking, excessive alcohol usage and other similar or related "social" issues. It's good to report to you that, while our chapter continues to have a very fine social calendar and regular "lively" events that would do justice to the parties and events y'all all enjoyed when you were on campus, this time SAE SC Nu was NOT involved in any of these issues that led to the recent discussions and negative publicity.

Further, the ultimate outcome of the situation was good, in that the Greek community and CU administration, working together, were ultimately able to find a path to address some of the legitimate excesses that truly did need attention. The administration also acknowledged that the problems were campus-wide, not just "Greek" and that the Greeks, because they are "officially organized" into their fraternities and sororities, can actually be an effective conduit to help address issues like these.

In the end, no parties were called off, no Homecoming displays or events were canceled, and the entire weekend was a good success (and, like always, just as Joe Young envisioned it, the Numeral Society/SAE float circled the field at half-time of the game, as always, and was super!).

Further good news is that CU administration, up to and including the President and the Board of Trustees, reaffirmed their support of the Greek community and its' many contributions to the campus and alumni activities. They committed to continue to work for the full success of Greek life, both now and into the future, including some immediate support and some additional long-term planning (like for a new "Greek row" of Greek housing someday down the road).

is already becoming quite the landmark on campus.

Thanks to all brothers who so generously contributed to

the memorial!

This summer Mike Maxwell took all the Numeral Soci-

ety / SAE donation checks ($6,000+) up to Amy Craft at

CU for our fraternity's underwriting of the Guarding Tiger

statue on the new CU Scroll of Honor Memo-

rial. Several of the current SAE chapter brothers helped

Mike in "handing over the checks," plus General Hap

Carr, US Air Force (Retired) and Colonel Sandy Edge, US

Army (Retired), both of whom are Clemson grads big in

the Clemson Corps, and were major "movers and shakers"

of the entire Scroll of Honor project. Brian O'Rourke is

head of Clemson's Alumni Relations and Development

("fund-raising") departments.

When you folks are in Tigertown for a CU football game

this season, make sure you stop by the new Scroll of

Honor Memorial, and look for Dick Kapp's stone on the

northern side of the memorial, and also for the Numeral

Society / SAE plaque as one of the underwriters on the

left-most Guarding Tiger." Plus, the new Scroll of Honor

Gentlemen,

It has been a pleasure being president for the last year. There were certainly some rough spots but I think we are a

better chapter than a year ago. We have started some great new traditions including a philanthropy volleyball

tournament where all the proceeds go to Children's Miracle Network, out national phi-

lanthropy. We have also started an annual alumni golf tournament and an annual

alumni parent social event. We registered more community service hours than the

South Carolina Nu Chapter ever has to my knowledge with almost 1,000 service hours

and 15 service hours per brother. We started the tradition of producing two chapter

newsletters per semester as well. It has been good to work with you and I appreciate

all that work that you put into SAE. I would like to welcome our new president, Tyler

Kingsmore.

This newsletter may not be up to the content or quality of some of the earlier issues. We have hurried to get it out before the end of the year (makes two this year). We have not been able to research names and graduation dates as we have in the past. The reasons (not excuses) have to do with time and personnel. Gretta Watts took on other duties at Mar-Mac and has not had time. Lynn Collins is new at Mar-Mac but very computer savvy. She learned the software and agreed to “publish” on a very short turnaround. Thanks to Gretta for her past efforts and to Lynn for her bravery!

SAE Numeral Society Dues are voluntary and low $25.00. We use those funds for a variety of purposes:

1. Helped the chapter buy a large tent for rush and social functions.

2. Helped the chapter buy a full-pig-sized barbecue grill on a trailer.

3. Contributed $500 or more yearly to the chapter's Chapter Endowment Fund, a fund whose goal is $35,000 - we're 20%+ there - which, when reached, will pay, through interest-earnings "throw-off" only, thus never touching the principal, scholarship money to send 3 or 4 younger brothers who show leadership potential to the annual SAE Leadership School each summer.

4. Helped underwrite an alumni/chapter joint party following the football game on Homecoming.

5. Donated $500 to Clemson to "purchase" two bricks in the new CU Scroll of Honor Memorial.

6. Paid the annual $100 fee to "national" SAE to remain an "official" SAE Chapter Alumni Assoc.

7. Underwrote part of the out-of-pocket $ of publishing/printing/distributing/mailing the award-winning newsletters (although now, expense is much less per letter, as we don't US Postal mail most editions, only e-mail - although we do still occasionally mail sometimes).

8. Took out to a nice recognition dinner the chapter brothers who obtained a 4.0 GPR.

9. Underwrote the "start-up" costs of the first annual reunion golf tourney (signs, prizes, printing expenses, some food and beverage at one event (although most of that was covered by the attendees' entry fee), etc.. The event was great!

10. Underwrote student chapter members' out-of-pocket expenses to attend alumni meetings when not in Clemson (gas to Greenville, or Columbia, etc.). Underwrote summer rush party expenses.

11. Helped the chapter with the annual Fall expenses of the Homecoming float.

Money makes your world go round and it enables the Alumni Association to make things happen. As they say on MTV (or somewhere like that), “SHOW ME THE MONEY”. Make your check payable to SAE Numeral Society Alumni Association (add a contribution and we will not turn it down) and send to the eminent treasurer
