What do you get when you call on alumni of Stellenbosch University (SU) to support their alma mater?

A not too shabby amount of over R100 000 in pledges in aid of student bursaries. This was the result of the annual SU Telethon, the Giving Forward-campaign, where alumni were asked to pledge their support in aid of an initiative to create opportunities for others to study at a world-class institution.

According to Ms Bev Witten, Director: Alumni Relations at SU, the student-driven initiative aims to raise money for the SU Bursary Fund which will be used to create opportunities for students to study at a world-class institution which is proud of its traditions, character and quality of research, teaching and learning.

In an earlier statement, the SU Rector, Prof Russel Botman said that with the support of alumni deserving students can be given the chance to become members of the SU alumni community. “Just like you benefitted from your time at SU, you can help to open the doors for others to also share in those experiences.”

During the telethon a total of 4184 calls were made over six days and student operators (final and postgraduate students) made a total of 697 calls for the two and half hour duration of the telethon every night.

Alumni can still get involved with this initiative – if you want to make a contribution to this worthy cause, please contact Louise Enslin at 021 808 9351 or [email protected].

2030 South Africa will have over 10 million university graduates with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. This takes into account the current number of graduates and targets proposed in the plan. This will be a 300 % increase over a 30 year period (2001 to 2030). This will be roughly 400 000 university graduates each year.

“For the increase in the number of graduates to be meaningful, the quality of education needs to improve. Many of the new graduates between now and 2030 must be in the critical skills categories. These include engineering, actuarial science, medicine, financial management and chartered accountancy. The downward trend in the number of learners who pass mathematics must be reversed.”

Ms Bev Witten, Director of Alumni Relations at SU, explained that the AR team decided to engage with SU alumni at the point where practice meets research. “A space where we are able to interrogate how well equipped our graduates are to engage with the world of work. Where better to do that than in a school – testing our own teaching and learning. We also want to promote our institution to prospective students using the success stories of our alumni. These narratives will hopefully speak to how SU has equipped them to make a contribution to some of the most pressing challenges in SA and on the continent.”

The event will start at 18h00 (for 18h30) at Mondale High in Merrydale Avenue, Portlands, Mitchells Plain. For enquiries please contact the SU Alumni Relations office on 021 808 2948 or [email protected]

It seems everything is getting easier these days…and supporting Stellenbosch University (SU) will soon be even easier when SU becomes a beneficiary of the MySchool fundraising programme.

MySchool is one of South Africa’s biggest community support programme that raises essential funds for schools, charities and environmental organisations.

No fewer than 600 000 South Africans carry MySchool cards. Supporters apply

for a MySchool card for free and can nominate Stellenbosch University as the beneficiary. When they purchase items from participating retailers they swipe the card with the purchase. A small percentage of their transaction is then allocated to their beneficiary school or charity and the partner stores pay the donation on your behalf! The supporter card is not a credit or debit card but simply tracks your transactions and your funds raised.

We will let you know as soon as you can start using your MySchool Card to support Stellenbosch University… let’s see how quickly we can get at least 1000 students and alumni to support SU via MySchool! Watch this space for more updates!

No less than 230 alumni came from all corners in South Africa to celebrate the 80th birthday of legendary Prof Eckart Kassier. At the event a student bursary in his name was also established – and at last count about R230 000 in pledges and money in the bank have been raised. Prof Kassier was lauded

for his academic contributions to the f ield of Agricultural Economics. Indien jy ook ’n bydrae wil maak, kontak Tarryn Allie by [email protected]
