    Matter

Anything that has mass and takes up space

    Anything made from atoms

    Examples:

    Molecules

    CellsPeople

    Air

    Water

Elements Elements are pure substance that cannot be

separated into simpler substance byphysical or chemical means.

    Pure substance

    Every atom is the same

Elements can be found on the periodic table!

    Element

    Single Atom

    Cannot be separated by

    chemical or physical

    processes

Compounds Pure substance composed of two or more

d ifferent elementsjoined by chemical bonds.

Made ofelements in a specific ratio

    Has a chemical formula

    Can only be separated by

    chemical means only, not physically

    Compound

    Single Molecule

Made of more than one type of

    atom bonded together

    Mixtures

Combining two or more pure substances

Substances held together by physicalforces, notchemical

No chemical change takes place .

    They can be separated physically.

    Homogeneous Mixtures

Homogeneous mixtures are also known as solutions.

Visually the solution looks uniform throughout.

    The different particles cannotbe seen.

This solution remains constant and does notseparate out.

    Heterogeneous Mixtures

    TWO TYPES:

Colloids Particles may be big enough to see

under a microscope but will stay suspended overtime.

Suspensions Have the largest of all dispersedparticles. They are visible to the eye and will settle

    out over time.

    Mixtures vs. CompoundsMIXTURE COMPOUND

COMPOSITION You can vary the amount

    of each substance in a

    mixture

    Cannot change the

    amount of each element

    in a compound

    CHEMICALLY

    JOINED?

    Not chemically joined Chemically joined

    PROPERTIES Each substance involved

    keeps its own properties

    Compound has

    properties different from

    each element

SEPARATION Easily separated Separated only using

    chemical reactions

    EXAMPLES Sea water, kool-aid Water
