Pure Substances• A substance that contains only one type of particle.• A sample of gold contains only gold particles. • A sample of water contains only water particles.

Elements• Substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by a chemical reaction.• Each element consists of a different atom.• You can identify elements by their chemical symbol, found on the Periodic Table.• Examples of elements: • Aluminum (Al) ­ solid• Mercury (Hg) ­ liquid• Helium (He) ­ gas

Heterogeneous Mixtures• A mixture that consists of two or more substances; different particles are visible. • The mixture looks different throughout (heterogeneous = “different phases”).

Homogeneous Mixtures• A mixture that consists of two or more substances that are mixed very well that we cannot see the parts (but no formula). • The mixture looks the same throughout (homogeneous or “same phase”).
