CLASSIFYING MATTERPure Substances and Mixtures
Matter can be classified as either a Pure Substance or a Mixture
Pure Substances contain only ONE TYPE of matter and CANNOT be broken down into smaller parts
Pure Substances can be further categorized as ELEMENTS OR COMPOUNDS
ELEMENTS contain only one type of ATOM and cannot be broken down into anything simpler.
ELEMENTS contain only ONE type of atom and cannot be broken down into anything simpler.
Example: Gold, copper, silver, sulfur, oxygen, helium, etc.
Compounds two or more elements chemical bound together. (Therefore consist of MORE THAN ONE type of atom).
Compounds consist of MORE THAN ONE type of atom.
Examples: water (H2O), Salt (NaCl), Carbon dioxide (CO2),
Matter can also exist in MIXTURES
Mixtures

Mixtures contain two or more pure substances NOT chemically bound together
Homogeneous Mixtures
Homogeneous Mixtures:LOOK the same throughout
Example: Koolaide, salt water, atmosphere
Heterogeneous Mixtures
Heterogeneous Mixtures:You can SEE individual parts
Example: Salad, granola, chicken noodle soup, bubble tea
Activity
• Sort the samples as either Pure Substances or Mixtures.
• Then further specify whether the Mixture is homogeneous or heterogeneous.
