Introduction

Two major civilizations form… Two major civilizations form in Middle East

and Eastern Mediterranean. A massive Persian Empire develops spurred

by outside invasion. At the same time, Greek city-states establish

a presence along the Eastern Mediterranean and into parts of Southern Europe.

Greeks develop strong culture of their own and every one else is considered “bar-bars.”

The Persian Empire Persians were the last group to

dominate the Middle East politically

Created the largest empire in world history at this time •Great leaders:• Cyrus the Great

• Conquered present-day Iraq• Darius the Great

• the empire reached from Turkey, to Libya, to India• measuring more than 2 million square miles

•Religious Tolerance• State Religion: Zoroastrianism but tolerant of other faiths

• Zoroastrianism- supreme deity, Ahura Mazda, cosmic struggle between a spirit of good, Spenta Mainyu, and a spirit of evil, Angra Mainyu.

•Governing System• Used an advanced postal system * Single currency• Network of roads- 1,600 Great Royal Road could be traveled in less

than a week • Flexible form of government * Created writing system that Greeks

adopted• Local officials, called satraps, ruled in the name of the Emperor

Greece- Introduction Indo-European people, like Aryan conquerors

of India. Ultimately toppled by waves of invaders until

civilization is destroyed in the peninsula until 800 BCE.

Rapid rise in civilization between 800-600 BCE.

Strong city-states instead of centralized government- each city state had its own government

Usually aristocratic council or tyranny of one Trade begins to develop rapidly Strong culture emerges, including a rich

written language derived from the Phoenician alphabet

Greek also joined in regular celebrations such as the athletic competitions of the Olympic Games

Sparta and Athens become two leading city-states

Most important: Athens and SpartaSparta: Rigid, slave-holding dictatorship, most feared armyAthens: culturally and politically advanced city that gained wealth through trade and power, naval strength

• 356-323 BCE• Skilled general

• Expanded territory into Asia, conquered Persian Empire, conquered land to the borders of India

• Preserved and spread Greek culture to Eurasia and Africa• Alexandria, in Egypt,

became one of the Mediterranean world’s great centers of trade, learning, and culture (Great Library)

Hellenic (Greek) Culture, “Hellenic” comes from the Greek’s name for Greece “Hellas” Religion

Science was extremely important and they outlined the basic laws of geometry, physics, mathematics, and astronomy

Aristotle’s work created the basis for the modern scientific method Art and Architecture

Still considered the world’s finest and is copied over and over again throughout history

Living Vocabulary Activity

Objective: To assess whether or not you have learned the important terms from today

Assignment: When directed, get into pairs and you will be given a

notecard. The notecard you will have to act out for the class. You are allowed to talk but not to say the term or words in the term.

Five minutes to prepare “presentation” 45 seconds to act it out. When the time to act has concluded, Ms. G will call on

individual students in the audience to identify the term and to explain the skit.
