    INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO HYDRAULIC

    RESEARCH STATION

SSEC-CE Third Year Students has visited for the

    HYDRAULIC RESEARCH STATION at Poondi,

    Chennai on 11, 13 & 14th August, 2014. This

Institute of Hydraulics and Hydrology, Poondi was

established as an Irrigation Research Station in 1944

at Poondi, a small village in Tiruvallur District, 60

KM from Chennai, adjoining Poondi reservoir

    constructed across Kosasthalaiyar River for

providing drinking water supply to Chennai city.

There was uniform growth from 1944 to 1995 in the

development activities. But after the implementation

of Water Resources Consolidation Project from 1996

    onwards,

there is rapid growth not only in providing

infrastructure facilities but also in research activities.

MUSEUM at Egmore, Chennai on 25th September,

    2014 & 1st October, 2014. The museum complex

consisting of six buildings and 46 galleries covers an

area of around 16.25 acres (66,000 m²) of land. The

objects displayed in the museum cover a variety of

artifacts and objects covering diverse fields including

    archeology, numismatics, zoology, natural history,

    sculptures, palm-leaf manuscripts and Amravati

    paintings.

Located close to the main museum entrance gates on

Pantheon Road, the museum theatre is a rare

specimen of the Italianate style of architecture,

inspired by Classical architecture and developed in

1802 at Britain by John Nash. However, the theatre

was built by the British in the late 19th century when

this style was no longer popular in England. The

structure has a high plinth and is accessed through a

tall flight of stairs. It is primarily a semicircular

structure with a rectangular wing at the rear. The

latter wing now houses some of the galleries of the

museum. The main hall is accessed through a

verandah with a row of columns linked by

semicircular arches. The walls and columns are

embellished with floral and geometric designs.

The huge main hall was initially designed for staging

theatrical performances. It has around 600 seats and

a commodious stage and the actors' dressing rooms

    adjoin this stage.

The museum has been using the theatre for its own

cultural and academic programs such as art

workshops, lectures and conferences. It also rents the

hall for various cultural performances, mainly

dramas. The hall has witnessed several plays

    including those of Shakespeare.

    MOU SIGNED WITH CADDAM

    TECHNOLOGIES – JUNE ’14

SSEC - CE has signed an MOU with CADDAM

    TECHNOLOGIES, Chennai to train our

    students in advanced software.

The main aim of to provide training and

development by experts, to create custom

Training programs and execution plans that focus

    on Engineering Career, experience over

awareness, and ultimately build knowledge based

    communities rather than purely completing

    training.

    COURSE ON TRAINING WORKSHOP USING

    “STAAD PRO” SOFTWARE

Course on Training workshop using “STAAD PRO”

software for Third year & Final Year Civil

Engineering. The training was carried out by

    Mr.G.Nagendran, Director, CADDAM

Technologies, Chennai. The main premise of the

training was to give the advanced method of analysis

    & design.

The commercial version, STAAD.Pro, is one of the

most widely used structural analysis and

design software products worldwide. It supports

several steel, concrete and timber design codes.

It can make use of various forms of analysis from the

traditional 1st order static analysis, 2nd order p-

    delta analysis, geometric non-linear analysis,

Pushover analysis (Static-Non Linear Analysis) or

a buckling analysis. It can also make use of various

forms of dynamic analysis from modal extraction to

time history and response spectrum analysis.

In recent years it has become part of integrated

structural analysis and design solutions mainly using

an exposed API called Open STAAD to access and

drive the program using a Visual Basic macro system

included in the application or by including Open

STAAD functionality in applications that themselves

    include suitable programmable macro systems.

    SELF CONFIDENCE: FIRST STEP TO

    SUCCESS

“Self confidence is the first requisite to great

    undertakings”

    - Samuel Johnson

This world, in which we live, is a very competitive

one. It is popularly described as a rat race, full of

competent people and the fittest of them survives.

Success is not a cake walk. One has to face lots of

hardships and obstacles to taste success. The most

important aspect in achieving success is self

confidence. However, people are ambitious but not

confident enough to go for it. In fact, most of them

don’t know how to go about it or are terrified to take

    risks in their lives.

Self confidence is not something which can be

achieved in a day or two. Let us understand that we

are not born with it. It’s the situation we face,

motivation from others and self motivation that make

us truly confident. Hence those of us who feel that

we lack confidence, have no reason to be upset.

There are 3 kinds of people. One, who dream big but

do not have any idea how to pursue it. The second,

who are over confident and end up ruining their

opportunities. Lastly, the ones who are confident and

have talent. This segment knows what they want

and how to move further. For attaining a goal, it is

important to strive for it and work on the strategies

relentlessly. It is necessary to make proper planning

and follow up. We will come across ups and downs

but should not lose focus and give up. Work hard

throughout and be focused until the desired result is

    achieved.

Since hard work is involved, it is imperative that we

do not lose hope or be disheartened. Knowing who

you are and what your strengths are, is an area that

requires your utmost focus. However, it depends on

how we perceive it. Everybody has flaws, but we

have to shine through them. Don’t lose hope, be

patient, take care of oneself and work hard. The

    puzzle will fall in place.

    SOIL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION UNDER

    THE EFFECT OF HIGH GROUNDWATER

    TABLE

This paper gives an account of a study performed for

the raft foundation of a commercial building of

considerable height and area. A raft 175 m long was

designed without due consideration to the buoyancy

effect due to high groundwater table as the building

is near the sea. Although the raft was designed as an

uninterrupted system, the designer used different,

and insufficient, thicknesses for the foundation in

order to lower costs. A 3D study was subsequently

undertaken to analyze the settlements of the raft

using finite elements. There was reasonable

agreement between the computed and the measured

settlements. However, the front block of the raft was

observed to float as soon as pumping for lowering of

the groundwater table was halted. This instigated the

analyzers to tie this portion of the raft to the

surrounding piled curtain that was used for

excavation of the foundation pit, by means of

reinforced concrete beams. The computations show

that the heave of the floor was restrained at

acceptable levels. It is planned to stop pumping in

the near future and compare the computed and

    measured vertical movements.

Although it required considerable time and effort,

reasonable results could be obtained in the three-

dimensional analysis of a complicated raft-

superstructure system under the influence of

floatation effects with the following results.

The system was analyzed as built in the first phase of

computation. A heave of 170 mm was predicted

following an excavation of 8.0 m for the raft. The

maximum settlement of 76 mm under B Block was

obtained as 76 mm prior to the application of the

uplift force. This prediction was found to be

    consistent with the measured settlement.

Pumping was halted after the application of the

proposed stabilizing measures and readings of the

movements were recorded to see whether the

    recommended system performed satisfactorily.
