Welcome to our birthday party celebrating 100 years of The Chartered Institute of Marketing...Our aim for this evening is simple; that our members get to know each other over a drink and good food, plus there’s the chance to win a copy of the Institute’s new book ‘The Marketing Century’, and no party would be complete without a goody bag and cake for everyone to take home. All light-hearted fun we hope.

A century of driving the marketing profession forward1911 - On May 16 1911, marketing as a profession began in the UK when 12 individuals met at the Inns of Court Hotel in London and created a new professional association. The Sales Managers’ Association was created to improve sales techniques and set the role of sales on a more professional footing.

1926 - The Institute’s first branch was formed in Manchester. The Institute in 2011 has 45 branches in the UK, and 11 branches internationally.

Our first annual conference was held in Buxton on 27 and 28 May 1926.

1940 - With the Second World War severely affecting the UK, the Association contributes to the war effort with correspondence courses for service personnel. At its height, exams involving 6,000 students are held in 82 Prisoner of War camps.

1952 - With the death of King George VI, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh consents to become the new Patron of the Association; a position he still holds today.

1963 - As part of ‘National Productivity Year’, a special luncheon was addressed by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, who stressed the importance of marketing as an essential element in improving the UK business performance.

1971 - The Institute establishes marketing groups for specific industries:

The first formed are the Construction Industry and the Travel Industry.

1989 - Her Majesty the Queen awards The Institute of Marketing with the Royal Charter, to become The Chartered Institute of Marketing.

1993 - The Institute becomes the first marketing institute to launch a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme.

1998 - The Institute began to award Chartered Marketer status in recognition of individual professionalism and on-going learning and development in marketing.
