Dear Church Liaison:

Welcome to our Pews to the Polls Church Network Team! We are thrilled that you made the decision to serve as a Church Liaison between your pastor, Citizens for Traditional Values (CTV), and your congregation.

Our Mission is to educate, equip and engage people of faith as Responsible Christian Citizens to ensure that our faith-based, traditional values are represented in the public conversation.

As a Church Liaison, you become the conduit between CTV and your church congregation to help promote Responsible Christian Citizenship. You may become as deeply involved as time permits. A Church Liaison directly implements the Pews to the Polls grassroots program in their local church. Your main goal is to help church attendees understand the importance of issues-based engagement in the government process.

1. You are joining many others from across Michigan as they work with us to better preserve Judeo-Christian values for future generations.

2. This role provides an important way to educate and motivate your church family toward a greater participation in public policy and in voting faith-based traditional values at the polls.

3. As you review the enclosed information, remember that each church is unique. Your approach, therefore, must be prayerful and fitted to the guidelines and leadership preferences in your church.

WHY THIS PROJECT & WHY YOU?

The Church Liaison must be a trusted member of their faith family to provide voter education and voter mobilization.

⇒ You can reach your church much more effectively and with greater impact than someone from the outside.

If not you, then who? Everett Hale once said: "I am only one, but I am one. I can't do everything, but I can do something. The something I ought to do, I can do. And by the grace of God, I will."

Many people who share conservative/traditional Judeo-Christian values do not exercise their voting privileges. These same people often object that their values are not being represented in public policy and express frustration about public officials who are not upholding moral principles. This indifference is often the reason why our values are not represented.

⇒ The only way for the traditional values of the faith-based community to win at the polls is to ensure that those who share these values vote to uphold our beliefs!

WE KNOW THAT WHEN PEOPLE OF FAITH ENGAGE, VICTORIES ARE WON. For decades, there has been much confusion on the subject of “separation of church and state.” Because of the massive misunderstanding on this topic, churches often fear the IRS and therefore do not participate in the public conversation over issues and selection of leaders.

⇒ This inactivity has a critical and damaging cultural impact on the local, state and national levels.

History shows that one person or one vote can make a difference! We believe that you are meant for such a time as this!

DID YOU KNOW… • In 1645, 1 (one) vote gave Oliver Cromwell control of England. • In 1776, 1 (one) vote gave us the English language instead of German. • In 1875, France changed from a Monarchy to a Republic by 1 (one) vote. • In 1923, 1 (one) vote gave Adolf Hitler control of the Nazi Party. • In 1990, John Engler was elected Governor by only .5% of the vote. • In 2002, Joe Hune defeated Dave Domas in a Michigan State House primary by 2 (two) votes. • In 2010, a Congressman from Iowa was the 1 (one) vote between making partial birth abortion on

the national level illegal. • In 2012, 1 (one) Supreme Court Justice made the decision on whether government mandated

healthcare is/was constitutional.

Let us inspire, inform and mobilize our brothers and sisters who sit with us in the pews on Sunday morning to exercise

their vote in the polling booth on Election Day!

Together we must work to preserve: 1. Sanctity of Life. 2. Traditional Marriage between one-man and one-woman. 3. Religious Freedom. 4. Parental Rights and Educational Choice. 5. Limited Government.

As we work to inspire and influence our church family, community and neighbors we will not only influence our world today, but also leave a profound legacy for generations to come!

Read through this information carefully. Familiarize yourself with the resources on our website, as well as the enclosed documents. CHURCH LIAISON DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

PEWS TO THE POLLS

The Pews to the Polls Program is a grassroots effort providing critical information and resources to encourage people who sit in the church pew on Sunday to vote their values on Election Day.

The Church Liaison position is the role through which this mission is accomplished!

A Church Liaison directly implements the Pews to the Polls program in their local church. Serving in this capacity allows you to be a conduit of information and action between your pastor and organizations (such as CTV) as a service to your congregation.

You should only assume this position after you share your heart and vision with the church leadership and receive their blessing. Depending on the size of the congregation, this effort may require the formation of a team to accomplish the goals.

You will be a catalyst to assist Christians in effectively fulfilling their GOD-given citizenship responsibilities in a way that complies with the IRS guidelines and respects the authority of church leadership.

The goal is to encourage people of faith toward a pro-active approach to the often-overlooked task of choosing leaders who

represent traditional Judeo-Christian values.

We do not promote a specific party or candidate, but rather emphasize the importance of upholding traditional Judeo-Christian values in public policy through informed voting and responsible citizen action according to God’s Word. Understanding that every aspect of our lives (health care, regulations, taxes, etc.) is influenced by the legislative, executive, and judiciary branches of government. Our desire is to help citizens take a responsible and engaging role in the decision-making process.

CHURCH LIAISON ACTIVITIES (ADDENDUM “C”)

1. Voter Registration and Absentee Ballots: Rules in Michigan have recently changed. Citizens can register to vote all the way up to Election Day and request an Absentee Ballot for any reason.

2. Voter Education/Information: As soon as available prior to the election, distribute comparison and non-partisan Voter Guides that contrast candidate’s views on important issues.

3. Voter Mobilization: In the days leading up to the election, each church member should receive an election reminder phone call from you or someone on your team. Also consider helping provide rides to the polls, if needed.

WHERE TO START AS A CHURCH LIAISON

We encourage you to view this role as a ministry. Remember, we cannot do this without you! Now that you understand what needs to be accomplished, here’s how to get started.

APPROACHING YOUR PASTOR AND CHURCH LEADERS

We honor Godly leadership and value their important influence in our state and nation.

When approaching your pastor and church leaders on this subject, assure them that your activities are non-partisan and not directed at electing specific candidates. (If individual members want to work for a particular candidate, that would not be considered a function of the church or this Pews to the Polls program.)

Your pastor may be concerned about an extremist or partisan agenda. You will have to earn your pastor’s trust and this could take some time. CTV’s project is within the guidelines of what is permitted by the IRS (see Addendum B: Church Do’s and Don’ts.) We are happy to answer any questions that may arise.

WHAT TO DO • Always maintain a respectful servant attitude and gentle demeanor. Approach your pastor/church

leaders with a spirit of honor. • As you speak with your pastor or leaders of your church, be equipped with facts. Speaking from a

position of reason and facts from a credible source, rather than emotion and passion, will likely be more convincing.

• Be patient and allow them time to warm up to your proposal. • Appreciate their concerns. Ask questions; don’t “tell”. • Focus on the most important issues rather than overwhelming your pastor with plans or too much

information. Look for incremental steps. ⇒ Keep things simple! Prioritize short vs. long-term goals.

WHAT NOT TO DO • Don’t be critical about the Pastor or the church. • Don’t use church membership lists unless specifically provided by the Pastor or staff. • Don’t put flyers on cars. • Don’t engage the congregation on any issue and/or effort without permission.

Remember, your task as a Church Liaison is not to advocate for a political agenda, party or candidate. The focus of this role is to educate church members on Responsible Christian Citizenship.

SAMPLE LETTER TO PASTORS AND CHURCH LEADERSHIP Dear _________:

We are very aware of the time restraints and overwhelming responsibilities of church leaders. It is for this reason CTV suggests identifying an individual in your church who has interests in this area and would be willing to serve as a Church Liaison.

It is my desire to serve the people of God in this capacity and provide the necessary information and resources for citizens within the church body to faithfully carry out their GOD-given civic responsibilities.

CTV is a nonprofit organization and the services they provide require no financial commitment. Now more than ever, we realize that many of the problems in our country are due, in part, from a lack of following Biblical principles. Our problems are great and many stem from leadership on all levels. What better place to start faith-based values than in our government? I am part of the “Pews to the Polls” program with the Citizens for Traditional Values, Lansing, MI. Our goal is to educate, equip and get Christians out to vote. Conservative values are important for our country. But sadly, many Christians just don’t vote – for many reasons. We’re too busy, don’t know the candidates, don’t know where to vote, etc. Our goal for the Pews to the Polls program is to remove all roadblocks, so Christians will get out and vote and make a difference! What we do: Give Information. We have handouts with ALL the candidates showing their stances on topics. We help get voters registered and even provide rides to polls in some cases. What we don’t: Promote any Political Party or Candidate. We will not suggest, point towards or suggest any candidate or party. We are strictly informational. I’m writing to request that your church joins us in this effort. First and foremost, we are not asking for you to do the work. Rather, we are asking for your permission and suggestion. If you could provide us with a name(s) of someone in your church/congregation that would be gifted to help, we would work directly with them. We prefer your time is spent where you see fit. You don’t need anything else added to your plate. However, someone within your church family can reach your people more effectively and with greater impact than an outsider! BUILD A TEAM Identify others in your church community who share similar values; meet with them, share this vision and ask them to partner with you in this effort. Delegate tasks to those whose strengths compliment the opportunity. Perform as a team (whether it’s a team of a few or twenty) in such a way that the leadership of the church will be eager to refer others with similar interests to you!

Craft your team however best serves your church/congregation. Perhaps you want to have monthly meetings, gather once a week for prayer, host events, or take on certain projects. Remember your team will represent the message you are trying to convey.

⇒ If fellow church members observe and perceive a team with an honorable spirit, gentledemeanor and servant approach, they will be more inclined to join you!

ADDENDUM A

A GUIDE TO RESPONSIBLE CHRISTIAN CITIZENSHIP

BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES FOR PUBLIC POLICY There is a direct connection between Biblical truth and issues facing our society today. God has given us guidance through His Word on how to approach these issues. The Bible has much to say about civil government and our relationship to earthly authorities. Although not often discussed, these truths should form the basis for our thinking and our actions as citizens.

CTV is dedicated to the preserving and promoting of our time-honored, traditional Judeo-Christian values in the public arena of Michigan. For our values to be represented, we need an increasing and vibrant grassroots network resulting in elected and appointed leaders who share these core principles.

We believe that Responsible Christian Citizenship includes participation in the public conversation about issues important to the faith community, in order to positively influence decisions affecting every aspect of our lives.

Citizens of Heaven and Earth We live our daily lives as a part of a “GOD-given Stewardship”. As citizens of two kingdoms - Heaven and Earth, our foundation for this program is built on the belief that it is our responsibility, to be engaged citizens. Christians are blessed with the privileges and responsibilities of both kingdoms!

Although we owe God our first and highest allegiance, we are also “stewards of the garden” for our faith-based community here in Michigan. A garden that is not regularly tended will not bear good fruit. We must be careful not to neglect our citizenship responsibilities to our peril. With our eyes set on Him, He has called us to be responsible stewards and caretakers of the realm in which we live.

⇒ By supporting policies on earth that reflect the eternal truths of the Kingdom of Heaven,we are making Earth a better place for everyone!

A New Definition of Politics

When boiled down to its essence, politics is essentially:

“A public conversation, about important issues, leading to ultimate decisions, that will profoundly affect every aspect of our lives.”

We are all a part of this conversation, whether we like it or not. We can seek to be a positive influence in the selection of leaders and the passing of laws, or we can do nothing. We must actively participate in the electoral process or risk living under the leaders and laws that others have chosen.

• If people of faith do not take part in the dialogue on these important issues, there is little chance that the ultimate outcomes will reflect traditional biblical values.

Informed Voting

A big part of this earthly stewardship is voting in such a way to ensure that Judeo-Christian values are represented. The goal of Responsible Christian Citizenship is that those who fill civil government positions will reflect the traditional time-honored values passed down from previous generations.

Biblical Principles Jesus on Authority

All human authority flows from God to man and should be exercised with the understanding that He will hold everyone, including civil leaders, accountable on Judgement Day. God’s commandments are very clear. Not only are we to be active participants in our surroundings, but we are to pray, give thanks for, respect and honor all authority, even those with which we disagree.

Government was important enough to God for him to clearly instruct us: “For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God...” (Romans 13:1b).

⇒ By obeying Him in this way, our nation will be blessed and we will bring glory to God!

• And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to

me.” (Matthew 28:18) • “On his robe and on his thigh, he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”

(Revelation 19:16) • Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36) • “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for

everyone - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior.” (1 Timothy 2:1-3)

• Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above.” (John 19:11)

⇒ “So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10-11)

The Early Church and Civil Government

Although civil government is ordained by God, as citizens of both Heaven and Earth, Christians know that our first and primary obligation is to His ultimate authority. In Matthew 6:10, Jesus taught His followers to pray: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

In the Epistles, early Christians were taught to maintain their allegiance to God, while respecting government leaders and obeying the laws unless they were required by those laws to disobey God.

We must remember that we are citizens of two realms—the Kingdom of Heaven and the kingdom of this world. We have important duties and responsibilities in both. Scripture teaches us that we are “in” the world, but not “of” the world, so our prayer is, “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

• “But our citizenship* is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus

Christ.” (Philippians 3:20) *Politeuma: government, homeland, community, commonwealth, colony.

• Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” (Mark 12:13-17)

• “Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.” (1 Peter 2:13-17)

• “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.” (Romans 13:1,6,7)

• But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29) “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:10)

• “And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray unto Jehovah for it; for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.” (Jer. 29:7) ⇒ “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 19:19)

Key Issues at Stake We stand at a crossroads in our nation that if people of faith do not engage and virtue does not return, we may very well lose our liberties. This is not about a political party or individual candidate—it is about fundamental truths. We should be pre-partisan in our approach, meaning that the values we endorse existed long before being adopted by a political party and will still be true even if abandoned in the future.

It is our duty to ensure the values of the faith-based community are represented, that those who fill those civil government positions are pro-life, pro-natural marriage, freedom of education and parental rights, and support limited government in all seats of elected power.

⇒ Now more than ever in our nation, it is imperative to increase the Church’s awareness of what is happening with Public policy in Michigan on issues that matter!

The Sanctity of Life

Now more than ever in our nation, it is imperative to increase the Church’s awareness of what is happening in the public arena on issues that matter. We must promote the common good by protecting unborn children.

• “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I

appointed you a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5) • “Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward.” (Psalm

127:3) • “And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth

was filled with the Holy Spirit,” (Luke 1:41) • “Thus says the LORD who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you.

(Isaiah 44:2) • “Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils

the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7) • “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb.” (Psalm

139:13) • “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul

knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of the, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139:14-16)

⇒ “….and do not kill the innocent and righteous, for I will not acquit the wicked.” (Exodus 23:7)

Religious Freedom and Protection of Conscience

If people of faith, virtues, integrity and traditional values do not monitor the activity of our local, state and national leaders NOW, or our freedoms could be stripped away very soon. Nowhere in the Bible does God call us to give up when things grow challenging!

• “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)

• “Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed?” (Psalm 2:1-2)

• But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29) • Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we

have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” (Daniel 3:16-18)

• Ensure religious freedom for all, opposing the corrupting moral influences in our schools and society, and calling for a limited government that does not usurp God-given individual rights of religion and conscience.

• But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge.” (Acts 4:19)

Educational Freedom and Parental Rights We support parental rights and educational choice focused on the best options for children across the economic spectrum.

Participation in this important public conversation can take many forms including issues awareness, letters to the editor, contacting elected officials, prayer, advocacy, volunteering and voting.

“Should Congress take up legislation affecting the federal government actions, I will stand on the side of common sense and restraint, and for allowing parents and local officials to run their schools in the way that best protects and meets the needs of their children.” Senator Rand Paul, June 2016.

• “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)

• “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4)

• “Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.” (Psalm 127:3)

Marriage and the Family

We believe that there is a direct connection between biblical principles and issues facing our society today, and that God has given us guidance through His Word on how to handle these issues. We are called to be involved, conscientious citizens who are mindful of our place and purpose on this earth. We must do our part to preserve traditional marriage and the family.

• He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6)

The Proper Role of Civil Government

In America we are blessed by a rare and wonderful Judeo-Christian heritage that enshrined self-government and limited government in the U.S. Constitution. While civil government has a God-given role, we must work to protect the inherent rights of the individual from the encroachment of the power of government.

When the people of God are absent, so are standards and worldviews involving Godly virtue, righteousness and integrity. As a result of being citizens of the United States, we have the privilege to vote on issues and leaders, and it is our duty to vote in a way that ensures the values we believe in are represented, that those who fill our civil government positions are pro-life, pro-natural marriage and supportive of limited government in all seats of elected power.

educational freedoms are priceless, and that limited government is essential.

For our values to be represented, we need an increasing and vibrant grassroots network resulting in elected and appointed leaders who share these core principles. These are moral issues, not political issues to be ignored by the faith-based community.

How exciting it is that God has bestowed upon us the role of “salt” and “light” in the culture! (Matthew 5:13-16)! Salt and light - even in small measures - influence and change their surroundings. As representatives and ambassadors for Christ, we must be engaged and ready to influence!

DO’S AND DON’TS FOR CHURCHES For your convenience we have provided a current list of the “Dos and Don’ts for Churches” provided by the Christian Coalition of Michigan. What Churches May Do:

ADDENDUM C

VOTER REGISTRATION/ABSENTEE BALLOTS, VOTER EDUCATION AND MOBILIZATION

1. VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE

Up to 60 days before an election, either as a part of Citizenship Sunday (keep reading for more information on this initiative) or as a stand-alone event, set up an information table to provide the opportunity for members to easily and conveniently register to vote. (Although new legislation allows registration up to Election Day, it is a good idea to hold a Voter Registration Drive early to allow time for processing and to give church members a signal that an election is coming soon)!

⇒ This is a non-partisan, non-candidate-oriented event.

Someone who is familiar with the registration process (and able to answer any questions) should attend the table. Often elected officials and/or Clerk’s Office staff are willing to volunteer at Voter Registration Drives.

After congregation members complete the voter registration form, to finalize the process, you or the registrant can deliver or mail the completed registration form to the Secretary of State or the appropriate city/township clerk. It is not required that registrants’ signatures are notarized. The applications are not valid until accepted by the Secretary of State of the Clerk’s Office. If applicants do not receive a Voter ID card within three weeks, they should contact their Elections Clerk.

New for 2020! Register to Vote in Person through Election Day!

Online or by Mail

1) For the Primary Election of August 4, 2020: The last day to register (other than in-person with the local clerk) for the August Primary Election is July 20, 2020.

2) For the November General Election of November 3, 2020: The last day to register in any manner (other than in-person with the local clerk) for the November General Election is October 19, 2020.

On-line at www.vote.org/state/michigan/, by mail, at a Secretary of State Branch or visit your city/township clerk.

To Register to Vote You Must Be: • A United States Citizen. • At least 18 years of age by Election Day. • A resident of Michigan and the city or township where you are applying to register to vote for at least 30 days prior to the election.

The following information must be correct, or the registration will not be valid: • The Name of the Applicant.• The Address of the Applicant.• The Birth Date of the Applicant.• Signature of the Applicant.

Remind interested persons whenever they move to a new city or township, they must re-register to vote. Also, ask if they know whether their children or other family members are registered. Encourage them to take a couple extra forms to register others in their network!

Voter registration instructions, forms, deadlines and more are available from your local Secretary of State (SOS) Office, or online at the SOS website (www.vote.org/state/michigan/).

⇒ If members of the congregation have questions or need clarification, they may find ithelpful to visit their county or municipal/city clerk who have a variety of resources toassist with the voter registration process.

New for 2020! Absentee Ballot for Any Reason!

Any registered Michigan voter can now Vote by Absentee Ballot. Voters can apply for an Absentee Ballot and Vote by Mail for any reason.

The first step is to fill out a ballot application and send it to your local Clerk’s Office. For an application, visit the Secretary of State website Michigan.gov/vote or your city/township clerk.

⇒ NOTE: This is a multi-step process, so it's recommended to get started as early aspossible!

Once the voter receives and completes the ballot application, the completed and signed application form must be returned by the voter via email or fax (as long as the signature is visible) in person, by a qualified family member or designee to their city/township clerk. Upon receipt of the ballot application, if all requirements are met, the Elections Clerk will mail the ballot to the voter.

⇒ CTV will provide the Church Liaison one (1) copy of the ballot application form forreproduction purposes.

Recommendation: CTV highly recommends the registrant personally hand-deliver the Absentee Ballot Application to their local Clerk’s Office, simultaneously obtain the Absentee Ballot, and vote in-person during their visit.

⇒ This ensures your vote has been received and eliminates variables such as dates, timingof mail, personal schedules, etc.

2. VOTER EDUCATION (OBTAIN AND DISTRIBUTE COMPARISON VOTER GUIDES)

When available before an election, obtain non-partisan Voter Guides from the Citizens for Traditional Values PAC, the Michigan Family Forum and/or a trusted national group. Make sure the Voter Guides are a comparative piece that gives fair comparison details on candidates running for office so the voter can make an educated decision and vote for the person who best represents their values.

Suggestions on Distribution of Voter Guides (with the permission of your church): • Place in the bulletin. • Pass out at the church doors. • Send a Digital Version to members. • It is best that an announcement is made from the pulpit informing the congregation of the

importance of obtaining a voter guide and getting out to vote on Election Day. • Do not put on cars in church parking lots. • Do not force the guide on someone who may not be interested. • And do not hand these out on church property without the Pastor’s/church’s approval.

For more information on how to effectively distribute these Voter Guides, please contact our office!

3. VOTER MOBILIZATION ACTION (IMPLEMENT GET OUT THE VOTE - GOTV)

Get Out the Vote (GOTV) is an action for you and your church team in the final days before an election. The objective is to telephone every member of your church with a gentle yet urgent reminder to educate themselves on the candidates and vote in the upcoming election.

What you will need: • A list of members and their phone numbers, per the blessing of your church leadership. • Information on registering to vote and/or absentee voting. • Candidate comparison Voter Guides and/or website (if hard-copy guides are not available). • A sample script (see below). • A few volunteers who are comfortable speaking on the phone. For example, each person could be

responsible for calling 10-20 families.

When you call, remind them: • Election Day is fast approaching! • Why it is important to vote. • What issues, elections, and proposals will be on their ballot (or how to find out). • Where to vote (or how to find out). • What time polls open and close. • And encourage them to review a voter guide and make an informed choice.

Helpful Suggestions for Callers making “Get Out the Vote - GOTV” phone calls

The purpose of these calls is not to debate issues but to provide a reminder of their freedom to vote and the impact the faith-based community can make by voting their values! • Don't be drawn into long conversations. Keep your calls brief and to the point. • Remain polite and courteous. Do not attempt to be forceful. • Do not tell people who to vote for. • If there is no answer after 5 rings, go to the next person on your list. Be sure to record the name

and phone number of those who did not answer so you can try to reach them again. • If you reach voicemail, leave a brief, detailed and professional message. Include your phone

number in case additional information is needed.

• If someone says they are unable to physically get to the polls, consider offering transportation. (Suggestion: consider offering rides to the polls to those needing assistance on Election Day).

• If a question is asked about a candidate, refer them to the information on the voter guide or send them a digital copy. Have voter information/Voter Guides available to reference.

• Another option is to contact their city/township Clerk’s Office for information on the issues, elections, and proposals that will be on their ballot (or how to find out).

Sample Script for "Get Out the Vote - GOTV” calls:

Note: Please make sure CTV or Michigan Family Forum has Voter Guides available and your team has access to them before you offer these resources.

"Hi ________, this is _______ from church. I am calling to remind you and your household to vote on (Primary Election date, August x) or (General Election date, November x). Were you planning on voting?" (Wait for response)

"We need you as a Christian to exercise your right to vote this year more than ever. When you vote you are not only exercising your rights but influencing our government."

“Have you seen a voter guide comparing the candidates?" (Wait for response) If No... "I have one in front of me that gives a good comparison between the candidates. Can I go through it with you?" Also, can I send you a copy?” (Point out candidate's positions on issues.)

If Yes... "Great, did you have a chance to read through it and understand the differences between the candidates?" (Point out the sharp comparisons between the candidates.)

"How many voters live in your house?" (Wait for response) "Can we count on all of you to vote?"

“Would you please encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to get out to vote? One vote can make a difference!”

“Thank you for your time! Please let me know if I can be of help to you at any time!”

If you receive an unfavorable response, ask if they would be willing to spend a few minutes in prayer for the elections. Remain polite and be sure to thank them for their time.

NOTE: Email and social media reminders to get out to vote can be helpful. But do not rely solely on these methods to effectively communicate your “Get Out the Vote - GOTV” effort.
