ARNOLD ACADEMY PAGE 2

Dear Parents/Carers It is a real privilege to be headteacher of Arnold Academy when I see the young people taking part in so many activities that not only support their learning but also fund raising for others less fortunate than ourselves. You will recall, from the October newsletter, that the children had raised a very large amount from the Fun Run and this reached the amazing total of £1500. The children may already have told you that the old pool area has now been transformed into an outside classroom by Dawkins Construction with room for planting. Dawkins have kindly agreed to pay for gardening tools to help our Gardening Club keep the area up to scratch. John Little, at Poplars Garden Centre, very kindly donated plants and we are now looking forward to the brighter side of the New Year when the space can be used to the full. We will be putting in seating and a special area for quiet time as well as using the space for outside drama activities. The sensory part of the garden is something that I am particularly keen to make the most of for our children.

At the end of November, we held our annual two days of Global Citizenship activities and the year sevens held their charity fair. For those of you who were not able to get to school: you missed a treat! The ideas for activities were tremendous; the prizes awesome

and the amount raised for the three Academy charities this year (Keech Cottage, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Shelter Box) is the highest ever: £1212. As we get towards Christmas, and the season of good will, I hope that the weather will be kind to us but my crystal ball is still at the menders… so please make certain that your child has returned the form with information about his or her safe haven, should the weather turn for the worse. We still have an arrangement with our local partner lower schools for children from Arnold to wait safely in their school halls if the Local Authority (LA) transport is delayed.

Children should wait a reasonable amount of time at the bus stop (past the usual time – i.e. 15 minutes) before going to the nearest school. The most important advice I can give is that we have a strong reputation for not closing during snow and bad winter conditions. Many of

you may recall that I was part of the team developing the Schools Open System (SOS) at the LA and it finally went live just in time for the bad weather last year.

We are all looking forward to a well-earned break over the Christmas period and I hope that you all manage to get a bit of a rest around the preparations and celebrations with family. Regards Ann Payne Headteacher

ARNOLD ACADEMY ADMINISTRATION BLOCK OPENING CEREMONY

On Friday 2nd December 2011 Josh Bassett former Arnold pupil and Bedford Blues winger officially opened our new administration block. Arnold Middle School became an Academy on 1st July this year and we are delighted with our new building which celebrates the next stage in our development. We feel extremely fortunate to have achieved this project and were delighted Josh was available to commemorate the opening. Josh Bassett is a local rugby talent who joined the Bedford

Blues in 2009, scoring 14 tries in his debut season. In February this year Josh scooped a development contract with the first team.

Alongside Josh, we had many supporters attending the ceremony including Nadine Dorries MP, Steven Bird (LA architect), Kevin Coughlin (Relmfield Builders), the Rev Cannon Newton (Barton-le-clay), Alex Freaks, David Brandon-Bravo and Shawn Fell (Partner school Head teachers), Lyndon Davison-Williams (Chair of Barton-le-clay parish council),

John Selley (Barton-le-Clay parish council), Lyn Selley (ex Governor), Tina Barbour (Governor), Alan Holley (HMW Consultants), and George Yam (Nicholas Tye Architects) the designer of our new administration block. All guests enjoyed a personalised tour of our facilities led by our pupils and were served tea with an assortment of home made cakes to round off the event. The event ended with Josh giving an inspirational talk to several of our boys where he shared his journey from being a pupil at our school through to his current success as a member of Bedford Blues Rugby Club. We would like to thank everyone for their support from the initial stages of the building through to the project completion and our celebratory ceremony.

History Department News The History Department would like to thank Mr Sibley (father of Luke Sibley) for his kind donations of artefacts to the department. We greatly appreciate them and are sure all our pupils will gain from experiencing objects at first hand.

If you have any artefacts at home that you would like to donate to school, please email Miss Truscott at: [email protected] . We are particularly interested in any artefacts that could be used for our topic ‘Britain since 1948’ where pupils look at the 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Have you got an old ‘brick’ mobile phone lay-ing in a cupboard or maybe even clothes from different decades? We would love to hear from you. Miss R Truscott Leader of History

Autumn Concert

On Tuesday 22nd November we held our Autumn Concert. This was our first concert of the year and featured pupils from all years. The evening started with a rousing performance of “Danserye” by Susato played by the School Orchestra. We then had a variety of solos and duets prepared for performance by our team of instrumental teachers, starting with a cello duet by Charlotte Hinkins and Lucy Binns. Later a group of Year 5 & 6 pupils gave a performance of “Karma Chameleon”. The concert also featured items by the Recorder Groups coached by Mrs Wood before concluding with 2 more pieces by the School Orchestra.

Next term we intend to try a new approach and will be having several small recital evenings featuring one instrumental teacher’s pupils at a time. In the spring term we will see and hear all the school drummers, guitarists and singers in 3 separate “Soirees”. Parents will be invited to see their child perform and demonstrate some of what they have learned in their lessons. Dates and times of these “Soirees” are yet to be confirmed.

Instrumental Lessons

This term we have been delighted to welcome over 60 beginners to instrumental lessons. Our private instrumental teachers have worked hard to accommodate all who wish to learn; something we were not able to do last year. They are still keen to encourage other pupils who wish to start to learn a musical instrument. We can offer tuition on all the following instruments but at present are looking particularly for new trumpet and flute players:-

Violin Viola Cello Guitar (acoustic & electric) Flute Clarinet Oboe Saxophone Trumpet Cornet Horn Trombone Piano Singing Drums

We have some instruments available to loan but in most cases pupils are expected to provide their own instruments usually by renting from one of the local music shops. Lessons cost £10 each week for an individual lesson and £6 for a shared lesson. We guarantee 10 lessons a term. If you would like to order lessons for your child please contact me for an application form.

Art Department News Year 7 have been working very hard on their art homework this term. They have been researching one of four artists; Picasso, Kahlo, Warhol and Munch they then produced a self portrait in the style of this artist. Here are a few excellent examples.

Why I chose Andy Warhol

I chose Andy Warhol because his use of colours is very simple, he doesn’t use many in each of his paintings and the colours are in blocks. His drawings are detailed though and I always know who or what the picture is of.

He uses fewer colours so it makes you look at the whole painting instead of all the little bits of the painting.

I have grown up with his style of painting because my dad’s paintings and pictures use blocks of colour like Andy Warhol did.

Page 10: Christmas Newsletter

ARNOLD ACADEMY PAGE 10

Why I chose Edvard Munch

I chose Edvard Munch because I think that his artwork is very good and drawn in a unique style.

I think it is good because it is well thought out, such as ‘The Scream,’ which is realistic but abstract. The sky and water is abstract but the person and the fence is quite realistic.

I like the style because it is different and also quite colourful.

Year 5 Science As part of our Year 5 Life Cycles topic we have hatched chicks. We started a month ago with 20 farm eggs and have hatched 7 chicks from the eggs. The first chick hatched out in the middle of a lesson.

Year 5 have followed the development of the fertilised eggs and the chicks in their science lessons. At the weekend the chicks are looked after by pupils who volunteer to take the chicks home. All the chicks have permanent homes and will leave us at the end of term.

We have to wait about a month or two to find out if we have male or female chicks.

The chicks have been very popular in lessons and at lunchtime we have a club where we can see the chicks and feed them. Cameron Wheeler 5DP

When Shall We Three Meet Again?

Sounds of witches and deadly deeds have been heard in Chiltern Class as we have looked at Macbeth this term.

The boys have enjoyed learning quotes and making a display in order to try to understand why Macbeth does what he does as well as what life was like in Shakespeare’s time.

English Department News

Do you write stories, poems, comics or playscripts at home? Do you fancy the chance to get your work published? Would you like some help to be creative or a quiet space to work on your own creations? If so—come along to English club, Tuesday lunchtimes at 12:20 in 3B with Miss Boreham and Mrs Cooper.

Competitions

After the Christmas break we will be actively encouraging pupils to participate in competitions. The main one that we are looking forward to is the 500 word story competition championed last year by Radio 2. One of our pupils, Abbie Haestier (now in year 6), was selected as one of the

900 finalists out of 30,000 entrants. Read her story overleaf.

Book reviews

Christmas homework for all pupils in the school includes a book review. Pop in to Barton Library to see some examples of pupils’ reviews and biographies of famous children’s authors. Also check out the school website as work will soon be shared on there.

World Book Day

Due to be held on the 1st March 2012. We will be celebrating the day in school with some activities linked in to the work of the Modern Foreign Languages department. More to be re-vealed closer to the time. There will be vouchers given to pu-pils around this time to enable them to purchase one of the se-lection of books from World Book Day for £1.

Pupil questionnaire

This is now on the VLE. Please encourage your child to log in and complete the questionnaire.

The Land of Chocolate Strawberries

by Abbie Haestier Once upon a time there lived a little girl called Sophie. She lived in a small cottage at the top of a hill; it was very small, with her mum and her grandma (her gran was an inventor). Sophie had golden, wavy hair with blue, sparkly eyes. One day her Grandma took Sophie out for a ride on her space ship; it was blue with wavy yellow stripes. The wind was just right. She had never been on a space ship before. They set of at about two o’clock in the afternoon, they were hoping to land on the moon but when they were just about to leave earth, a gigantic gust of wind hit the space ship and blew them in the opposite direction to the moon, so instead they landed on a soft bouncy thing. They could smell chocolate and strawberries. They stepped out of the space ship and saw they had indeed landed on a chocolate-coated strawberry. ”What’s this place called and how did we land on top of this mountain?” Sophie asked. “I don’t know” answered Grandma. They walked about to get a better view. They were shocked to see a load of strawberry pips dancing around like pixies, dancing around a bunch of mushrooms. They ran over and started to try to get the pips’ attention. It did not work. ”I don’t think they understand us” whispered Sophie to Grandma. “I think you may be right!” exclaimed Grandma. Just then the king of the pips came out to see what had happened. ” How lid you dand here?” asked the king. “What is he saying?” whispered Sophie to Grandma. “How did you land here?, I think he is speaking a different language, but I think I can translate it”, said Grandma.

Page 15: Christmas Newsletter

PAGE 15

“Our space ship prashed landed on your clanet”, Grandma told the king. “Net them a home gow” ordered the king. Just then a servant led them to a home, made of red, juicy strawberry. “What ho you eat dere?” asked Grandma. “Ctrawberries and shocolate”, answered one of the king’s servants. At about 5 o’clock in the afternoon they went to see how the pips were doing, they were only pulling the space ship apart. “Wove out of my may!” yelled the king as he barged through the pips. “What are you doing?” the king asked the pips. “Fe’re wixing the space ship”, said one pip. “Yeah” said another. “Fixing it!” shouted the king. “You’re not pixing it, your fulling it to pieces!” the king said looking very annoyed. “Sorry”, said a pip. The king took no notice and started to work on the space ship; in no time at all the space ship was fixed. “There you go”, the king said. “Yhank tou”. Sophie and grandma said. They hopped back into their space ship, smelling of strawberries and chocolate and flew back home. When they got home, they told Sophie’s mum straight away, she didn’t believe them and no one else did either.

Congratulations Abbie on an excellent story.

Global Citizenship Days 2011

Once again, Arnold saw a very successful Global Citizenship Enrichment two day event. The theme this year was ‘We are all part of ONE World’.

In Key Stage 2, classes adopted a country and created a book for permanent display in our library.

Year 8 enjoyed a carousel of events looking at different aspects of Global Citizenship whilst Year 7 planned the stalls to raise money for our chosen charities.

We would like to thank all our parents and carers who supported our pupils during these days. Those who came to the Charity Fair I’m sure you will agree, it was our bet yet.

Physical Education News

Once again this term has been an extremely productive and eventful term within the Physical Education department. Starting with year 5 where football practices have been ongoing since the beginning of term. A number of pupils have been chosen for the annual year 5 football festival which is due to take place in March. Meanwhile, years 6, 7, and 8 have also begun their County cup campaigns. Year 6 received a bye in the first round, which then

saw them enter the following round where they faced Ashton Middle School. In a highly entertaining game the boys played some fantastic football, and despite going behind equalised through Charlie Milton’s strike. Despite playing so well and dominating for large spells the boys were 2-1 down with minutes to play. However, the pressure finally paid off and Scott Stevens not only net-ted an equaliser but also a dramatic winner in the dying seconds which saw us progress to the semi-finals where we will meet Lincroft away. A fantastic effort by all involved! The Year 7 squad continued where they finished last season, playing some excellent football in what is a very strong squad. The team started their County cup campaign with an interesting home fixture versus Lincroft. The boys were excellent and a mixture of good football and ruth-less finishing saw us triumph with an impressive 7-0 win. This re-sulted in us travelling to Newnham Middle School in round 2 to face a Newnham team who had just recorded a 5-1 win over Streetfield School. Once again the boys were fantastic, and al-though Newnham played well in the game, our boys showed great quality in producing an excellent 5-1 win. The boys now face a home fixture versus Icknield School in Round 3 to decide who will progress to the semi-finals. The year 8 squad this year has suffered terribly with injuries, with as many 5 first team players missing for their first round game versus Newnham. Playing in extremely windy conditions the boys competed well but were unfortunate as a deflected goal ultimately decided a tight contest.

Page 26: Christmas Newsletter

PAGE 26

Saturday 19th November saw a year 7 5-a-side squad compete in the district 5-a-side competition at Robert Bloomfield. In what was a very strong competition the squad of 7 played some excellent football and started with a solid 1-0 win over Alameda. This was followed up with an excellent 1-0 win over Lincroft. In an extremely positive mood the boys faced a Robert Bloomfield team in their 3rd game, Robert Bloomfield scored. We entered our last fixture with Woodlands looking for goals and a win. The boys were fantastic from the off as we recorded an excellent

3-0 win. With our points and goal difference level we became District Champions on the head to head rule over Lincroft. A fantastic morning of football was had by all and we now look forward to the Regional Finals at the University of East Anglia on Friday 27th January 2012, where ourselves and Lincroft (who qualified as second place) will represent the area. It should be an excellent day and one I’m sure our boys are already looking forward to. Well done to the following District Champions 5-a-side squad:

This term has also seen girls football practices start for both Key Stage 2 and 3 and it has been excellent to see a positive turnout of pupils getting involved and enjoying the sport so much. We also look forward to the start of the boys league campaigns for years 6, 7 and 8 which are scheduled to start in February. Our Rugby season meanwhile has been just as

successful with our year 7 squad going their whole season unbeaten in their 7 league games and subsequently winning the league in impressive style. The commitment at training has been excellent and the boys have also reached the quarter finals of the County Cup following an impressive 20-10 win over Marston Vale and a bye versus Mark Rutherford. The year 6 rugby squad has also had an eventful term, training for the annual Bancrofts rugby festival in London. The squad went to the festival on Wednesday 16th November and produced some excellent rugby. Despite having a fairly inexperienced squad, the boys were fantastic in both their attitude and performance against some very strong sides, and finished the competition with an impressive 3 wins from 6 games. The boys showed fantastic character and spirit as they competed and had a thoroughly enjoyable day! Whilst every single pupil did the school proud a special mention must go to Jay Palmer who continually made some amazing last ditch tackles to prevent certain try-scoring situations! On Thursday 8th December a group of 30 year 7 boys went for a trip out to watch the Annual Varsity Match between Cambridge and Oxford University at Twickenham. It was a fantastic day out and a fantastic opportunity to watch some quality rugby at England’s home of rugby. The boy’s also met former England

international Matt Dawson and really enjoyed the atmosphere. We hope all that attended had a fantastic day. The year 8 basketball team have had a fantastic start to their season producing a stunning 26-2 win over Alameda before edging a 25-23 thriller versus Parkfields. We are still awaiting to see whether our match postponed fixture against Woodlands can be re-arranged. A win in our last game will mean that we win our pool league so a fantastic season boys well done! Year 8 Basketball Squad 2011-12

Moving onto the girls successes, the girl’s basketball teams have started their practises this term. The teams will be having a basketball coach from MK Lions in to deliver some specific training sessions starting on the 11th January 3.30- 4.30-pm.

The year 8’s played their first game against Alameda on the 8th December. The game started off tight, with every basket won by Arnold being matched by Alameda. During the second half the Arnold girls came into their own, and scored 3 consecutive baskets in a row, taking the score to 12-6. In the last quarter of the game Alameda scored, once again matched by Arnold to give a final score of 14-8 to Arnold.

There were some great individual performances by Jessica Pitts and Jessica Jones, with all team members showing a great desire to win and gain possession back from Alameda. Joanna Saunders and Hannah Underwood were aggressive in defence winning many balls back for the team. A big congratulations to all the girls who played:

The team are in action again on the 12th January at home to Woodlands. The year 7 Netball team qualified for the county finals after finishing top of the Mid Beds league. The county finals were played on Wed 7th December at Bedford High School. The girls played 6 separate games winning 4, drawing 1 and losing 1. Resulting in them finishing in 2nd place overall losing out to Bedford High School.

The girls have been extremely committed to their training and the PE department and this has resulted in their success. I would like to say a big thank you to all of them and a massive congratulations for their truly deserved 2nd place in the county finals. The girls will receive medals for their victory and hopefully these will arrive soon. There were some great individual performances during the county finals. Charlotte Eagles proved to be an

integral part of the defence, winning many interceptions, whilst also always supporting the attack to bring the ball up the court. Aoife McDonagh also performed outstanding during the finals with some lovely shooting and movement across the court and in the circle. All the girls were determined during their games, despite it being an extremely cold evening. Well done to all the team and thank you to all the parents who came to support: Unfortunately Louise Miller was absent on the day due to illness.

The 2011 netball season has been fantastic for girls in KS2 at Arnold. They have enjoyed a term of netball club on Fridays at lunch to enrich their active participation and inclusion in sport as well as develop competitive and higher ability netball skills to be able to represent Arnold this year.

Year 6

The Year 6 team has shown significant development in their netball skills since last year with the girls displaying a great competitive spirit and improved discipline with the rules of netball. This is particularly evident in the girls 2nd match against Robert Bloomfield, where last year the score line was 10-0 to Bloomfield, this year, the girls proved they could hold their own with a final score being drawn at 3-3.

Sarah McMenemy was a dominant force and played outstandingly in defence and attack and Sienna Taylor was consistently fantastic in defence. Holly Luff, Holly Byron and Ellie Dudley proved to be consistent all rounders, giving stability to the side against Bloomfield. The girls enjoyed a comfortable win against Etonbury with a score of 13-0 which was a welcomed confidence booster for the team. Laura Holland showed tremendous strength as a shooter and Amelia Kirby has developed fantastic defensive skills during the fixtures.

The following four matches were played at Redborne Upper, the girls won both games against Woodlands 4-1 and Alameda 4-3. The girls then had a loss against Parkfields 3-1 and regaining then to beat Marston Vale 3-1.

The final fixtures will be played on Tuesday 13th December at Holywell and we hope the girls may have a chance to reach the finals. Fantastic work girls, it has been a pleasure to see you improve and develop some amazing netball skills! Year 5 It has to be said that this years Year 5 netball team are absolutely phenomenal! They are so impressive in their netball skills as a team that they can even match and hold their own in training against the Year 6 team. They have won every single match this year with absolute flare, some being a whitewash and

the girls still hold a mature and modest outlook to these results. Anais Stichbury has shown an outstanding natural ability in any position with her netball skills and is a real asset to the team. Rosie Jennings also makes a dominating impact on court, showing an amazing determination and ability which shines in every game. Morgan Bunyan and Jessica Miles display fantastic all round abilities with shooting and defence and Ella Slater has shown solid consistency in defence throughout the season. Charlotte Smith has shown significant development in her defensive skills and movement playing centre and Molly Gill has shown a great ability in defence and attack. I feel confident of the girls’ success that they should inevitably make the county finals this year, though we still have next weeks match against Holywell and Henlow, which will be the ultimate decider! I am extremely proud of the girls and wish them continued success in their netball.

The scores for this season so far are: Arnold v Etonbury won 12-0 Arnold v Robert Bloomfield won 19-0 Arnold v Parkfields won 5-2 Arnold v Marston Vale won 9-0

A final word must be a big thank you to all the parents and carers who have cheered the girls on and driven them to the matches and supported with managing the team and rotations over the season.

As you can see it has been an extremely busy and successful half term sports wise. We look forward to the sporting challenges that lie ahead for the spring term.
