CLUB UPDATES

AMERICAN Hi everyone! Here’s what’s going on in American recently.

This past week from November 5 th to November 9th was

International Key Club Week! To celebrate, on different

days of the week, we held various events, such as wearing

Key Club attire, Kudos to Key Players (showing our

appreciation to school staff members by sending them

thank you cards), and Bring a Friend to Key Club! For that,

we handed out brownies and other goodies to people new

to Key Club. We’ve been cruising along this month nicely,

and are in the process of gathering new members and

freshmen officers! Also, many of our members participated

in Fall Rally North, where we dedicated the day to showing

off our Key Club pride and spirit. It turns out that our club

raised the most money for Pediatric Trauma Prevention!

We look forward to next year’s FRN!

INDEPENDENCE What better way to celebrate the end of fall than

by hosting a festival full of fun and games?

Volunteers helped run the games and book sale,

sold pumpkins, face painted, did crazy hair, and

supervised obstacles at the Fall Festival Fun and

Games in order to ensure the success of this

event. It was a great way for the volunteers to

spend their evening as they saw children with

huge smiles on their faces as they participated in

the various activities that they helped run.

IRVINGTON This month, Irvington really focused on putting their efforts on getting members to be more involved in Key Club, such as Fall Rally North attendance. We also emphasized the importance of dues and becoming an actual Key Club member. On October, 10th, we held a New Member Orientation meeting for interested students so that they could get to know more about Key Club and our values. We also opened up Class Representatives and Publicity Committee applications this month, which our Publicity Commissioners (Miuccia and Sirena) and Spirit Coordinator (Emmanuel) are also currently reviewing. There was a special Fall Rally North meeting for attendees after the general meeting on the 18th where we discussed safety, medical forms, rides, and other FRN details. Irvington also held their regular biweekly meetings where we discussed service events, event recaps, dues, and more. This month, we participated in the Math Science Nucleus Night where we help kids with interactive science/educational projects. We also partnered up with the Arthritis Foundation to help out with their annual Bone & Joint Expo with their workshops. While the month was very stressful for the officers, we felt it was extremely rewarding during Fall Rally North where we were able to bond with our newest Key Club members and donate $75 to PTP.

KIPP Hey 12 East! October was a great month for KIPP. We participated in awesome service events, along with fundraising for Trick or Treat for UNICEF! We spent a day off from school at our connected middle school, KIPP Heartwood Academy, where we helped teachers with things around campus and tutored students. It was a great experience for our members to return to our alma mater, along with giving back to our community! Aside from that, a few of us spent our Sunday morning volunteering at the Step Out for Diabetes Walk in Downtown San Jose. It was a fun day, where some of our first year Key Clubbers got to experience their first day of service! The following week, we had a few volunteers at the Walk to End Alzheimer's in San Jose. There were many other Key Club members there from other schools; they had fun interacting with other people. For this month, I would like to shout-out our newest board member, Juan Pacheco. He's a first year Key Clubber, and has already taken a leadership role as our Spirit Coordinator. He takes a lot of pride in being a Superhero and will push other members to come out of their comfort zone and participate in spirit activities with the club. Juan has been awarded as KIPP's Member of the Month for his outgoing nature and inclusiveness, which is one of Key Club's four core values!

MISSION

SAN JOSE MSJ Key Clubbers were busy during the month of November. Events including the annual MSJ InterKeyLeo CANNED FOOD DRIVE, the End Hunger Now Food Drive, and November DCM all were great successes! FIrst was the Annual MSJHS Canned Food Drive; Every year, Interact, Key Club, and LEO Club get together to host this event. We will go around the local communities of MSJ and collect canned food items to donate to the Abode Homeless Shelter. In the first event, we passed out flyers to inform the community. In the second, we went around to collect the cans! This year we raised over 1360 cans! Second was the End Hunger Now Food Drive hosted by Safeway! We passed out fliers to incoming shoppers and informed them of the event, where they could purchase any food items or supplies, even a prepacked $10 grocery bag to benefit local food banks during Thanksgiving. We partnered with Kiwanis as well as NBC Bay Area News!

MILPITAS Milpitas Key Club volunteered in an array of community service events this past month, including but not limited to Rock & Roll Marathon, FAAN Walk for Food Allergy, Walk to End Alzheimer's, Light the Night, Healthy Family Fun Run 5k, and Race Against PH. Upcoming holiday events include Christmas Tree Lighting and Kohl's Cares for Kids! We are also coordinating a clothes drive, so if you have any old and unworn clothes wasting away in the back of your closets, please donate them to us! We're planning to donate them to the local food pantry, especially as the weather grows colder. Members also enjoyed their day at Six Flags for Fally Rally North-- We were so close to winning the spirit stick! Speaking of spirit, members showed their Key Club spirit during Key Club week by wearing spirit gear on Monday, serenading officers on Tuesday, finding paper keys around campus on Wednesday, recruiting new members on Thursday, and humiliating themselves by doing the Key Club cheer on Friday. We had a lot of fun this past month, and we hope others enjoyed themselves as well :)

PIEDMONT As usual, PHHS Key Club had its weekly meeting on Wednesday. The meeting started out the same as every other one. The room was loud as Key Clubbers chatted amongst each other and ate their lunch; the officers quieted them down, and the meeting was finally able to start. We went through the usual activities, telling members to sign up with the appropriate officers. Finally, we got to one of the most important activities of Key Club--Trick-or-treat for UNICEF. As our president, Allison, talked about the horrific effects of maternal and neonatal tetanus, the room was extremely quiet; you could even hear a pin drop. Allison talked about PTP, and how we can help mothers and their babies by simply trick-or-treating for money instead of candy. As soon as the meeting was done, there was a long, long line of people waiting to get their UNICEF boxes. We can't wait to see how much money they all raised! -Christina Bui

WASHINGTON

Our club had an amazing turnout at Fall Rally North! Everyone had a great time meeting new people and attending the spirited rally. We are all definitely looking forward to next year's Fall Rally North! Our club is doing well this month. We've gotten a lot more service events ahead of us and new members. Hopefully, we'll be very successful this year in spreading the Key Club spirit!

SAN JOSE This past month our Key Club attended the Step out and Walk for Diabetes walk in downtown San Jose. We walked/ran 10K in all and recognized loads of other Key Clubbers. In all it was a very successful event and was a good change from the usual events we attend. Another event we attended was the hugely anticipated Fall Rally North at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. It was very fun attending it with other members of Division 12 East. We really showed our spirit and came in really close to winning the spirit stick! But most importantly we raised money for PTP which was the ultimate goal.

November Division Council Meeting (DCM)

Key Leader

What is better than having a meeting with Key Clubbers, pot luck, and cheers? A DCM with Key Clubbers, pot luck, cheers, AND an ELIMINATE PROJECT presentation! Allison Mac, D12E Eliminate Project Coordinator from Piedmont Hill, did not only advocate for the project but also motivated us in achieving the things we believe in. She captivated us with a story that we can all relate to. Allison put us in the shoes of the children who are suffering from MNT, which caused us to realize the power of a few donations. Allison hoped that everyone who attended, gained at least one thing from her and with that use it to educate others about the ELIMINATE PROJECT.

This weekend I attended KeyLeader as a student facilitator, and it was incredible to see people from all types of areas and schools come together for one weekend to learn about leadership. Some came from an hour away, others came from up to five hours away! I was really honored to meet everybody and to learn more about what I can do for my home, school, and community. I led a neighborhood called Servicelife. where our symbol was a hashtag - overused, I know, but it was fun to use as a joke! Our lead facilitator was Megan Fate Marshman, and she taught us through videos, personal experience, and incredible lectures what leadership was really about. We drew pictures of what a KeyLeader was and created skits on how to take our KeyLeader experiences to better our community. There was also very yummy food, and we had hot chocolate on tap! The best experience was perhaps the Ropes Course, where we went outside into the wilderness (oooo) and participated in fun, team-building games. At the end of the day, we gathered around a campfire eating s'mores to talk about what we've learned and what we planned to take back when we left Camp Jones Gulch. Being together with all sorts of people I wouldn't have normally talked to and growing together as one group to better the world was an amazing experience. I'm so glad to have spent this weekend with all these people - and I know I still have a lot to learn!

- Vivian Nguyen, Irvington

Key Leader was truly an amazing experience, I made a lot of new friends, learned a lot of new things, and had the time of my life! I watched people that came in shy, awkward, and when they left Key Leader they were social, talkative, and amazing leaders. Key Leader changed my life because I gave me the essentials that I need to lead, it gave me what I needed to be a better leader. The difference between Key Leader and any other training conference is that Key Leader finds out your flaws, rips them apart, and then puts everything back together again. It was an experience I will never forget because not only did I become a better leader, I became friends and a lot closer to people I never thought I would know. If you get the chance, I highly recommend you go! I can't wait to go again next year! It'll be a reunion for all of the juniors!

December Division Council Meeting (DCM)

LTG Candidate Training Conference

The CNH District Board invites you to the Lt. Governor Candidate Training Conference (CTC) on December 1st, 2012. Members, who are interested in running for Lt. Governor, should attend this event! CTC will prepare you and teach you everything you need to know about being Lt. Governor. Things that will be going over are the Conclave process, development as a leader, Lt. Governor duties, and so much more! Not sure if you want to run for Lt. Governor? Don't worry! Attending CTC does not mean you are for sure running for Lt. Governor; all members are welcome to attend, regardless of their position on the matter. CTC 2012 will be held in Sunnyvale; please contact Vanessa Yeh (Contact on page8) if you are interested in attending!

What’s a better event to carol with Key Clubbers than the upcoming December DCM! At this DCM, we will be singing Christmas songs around the neighborhood and learning about the causes of our cause through two

presentations from our Pediatric Trauma Prevention Coordinator, Amy Zhao, and Children's Miracle Network coordinator, Jennifer Duong.

WHEN: December 21, 6pm - 8pm WHERE: To Be Announced Soon

Club of the month Member of the month

Our member of the month is Sarah Griffiths. At her first Fall Rally North she showed she can show as much spirit as someone who has been going for years! This is the kind of spirit every freshman in Key Club should have and I'm very happy to have a younger person being involved from the start of their high school career. I'm very excited to see how she will lead the club along with her peers when my peers and I graduate in couple of years.

Within the month of September alone, Independence High School completed 1021.4 hours! Currently, Independence is helping their school's recycling team by coordinating a recycling project. By reaching out to other organizations on their campus, Independence has also been able to build strong relations with several of the other clubs. Additionally, as of December 1st, Independence has 258 dues paid members! They have gone above and BEEyond their goal of having 175 members. Looking at the numbers, one can already tell how dedicated and determined the members of Independence High School's Key Club are. However, no matter the large the growth, we can always keep on going, and Independence is a prime example of this! Congratulations on your accomplishments, Independence, and please keep up all the amazing work! Thank you for your service :) Everyone within the division has been doing an absolutely fantastic job, and all of you deserve to be recognized! We will be showcasing different clubs ever month, so never stop that service!

D12E Book Drive Within only 3 weeks, Superheroes from all around

D12E join forces to donate children books. With the help of 10 schools, we collected a total of 850 books! That’s 850 opportunities for just ONE child to learn and explore the world of adventure and knowledge.

Htet Wint, Jump Start Coordinator, and Melody

Valdez, March of Dimes Coordinator, hope that by hosting this book drive we will be able to provide

children at Lucile Packard Hospital a chance to learn and grow. They also hope that donating books to

children will bring a smile to the faces in the Christmas Holiday. And They Sure Did.

Websites Closing Message Tis’ the season to be caring, Hey Key Clubbers! We will finally reach Christmas, the best holiday of the year where everyone is looking forward to the 2 weeks break and their presents. Not everyone is as fortunate as us. We have a roof to be under during the cold winter season, gigantic meal to feast on, and gifts to open on Christmas morning. However, the less fortunate have nothing at all, which is why this Christmas is the season to care and give back even more! During the two weeks break, let’s attend community service events to provide to those who doesn’t have a lot and have them experience the joy of Christmas!
