Attendance The “Compulsory School Age” in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is the period of the child’s life from the time the child’s parents elect to have the child enter school, which shall not be later than the age of eight (8) until the age of seventeen (17). The only legal excuses for absences are personal illness, quarantine, death of a family member or extreme emergency reasons (administration approval required). The following steps should be followed to report an absence:

1. A parent/guardian is required to call the attendance office prior to the start of the school day at 610-485-6881 ext. 2923 to report an absence.

2. The phone call must be followed by a written note. You can fax (610-494-3064) or send in with

the student the day the student returns to school. The note should include the student’s full

name, grade, reason and date of absence and a parent/guardian signature. The note must be

given to the student’s homeroom teacher and sent to the office at the beginning of the school

day. A doctor’s note is required for three (3) or more consecutive days absent. Throughout the

course of the year, a maximum of 5 parent notes will be accepted. Beyond that number, a doc-

tor’s note specifically identifying the appropriate days will be required.

Attendance Notification- The following procedures shall be followed in administering the attendance procedures in regard to absences:

1. If a student is absent and the school has not been contacted as stated above, an automated phone call will be sent.

2. After the 3rd unexcused absence a parent letter will be issued. 3. At the 5th unexcused absence, a meeting between a parent, an administrator and guidance

counselor will be required in order to limit the additional absences. 4. When a student accumulates 10 unexcused absences, the parent(s)/guardian(s) will be sub-

mitted to the court system. Please keep the school notified of any phone number or address changes. Truancy Elimination Plan (TEP) A Truancy Elimination Plan (TEP) provides the opportunity to identify, understand and explore issues contributing to a student’s absence or tardy behavior. The TEP will provide documentation between the school and the student’s family of a “good faith” effort should future action be required. The TEP will assist the student in addressing and resolving school attendance issues and to succeed in school both socially and academically. Arrival/ Departure In the morning, we provide supervision for students beginning at 7:30am. Please do not drop students at school or allow them to be on school property before 7:30am. All students will use the cafeteria doors to enter the school. Students who eat breakfast will be permitted to eat breakfast between 7:30am-7:50am. Students who are not eating breakfast should report to their designated areas: Grades 5-6: Auditorium Grades 7-8: Gym

Page 6: Chichester Middle School 925 Meetinghouse Road Every

6

Once a student arrives on school property, he/she cannot leave school property. Violating this rule will result in disciplinary consequence. If you are dropping off your child in the morning but not parking, please drop your child/ren off at the parent drop-off lane. Please follow the plan below:

1. Please drive far down the driveway as possible before discharging your child/ren. If there is a

car in front of you pull up directly behind the car in front of you.

2. Parents should remain in their cars. This is a safety issue.

3. Discharge students from the passenger side door.

4. Remain in a single lane. Do not pass other cars that are discharging children. We have walkers

and staff members walking across the driveway at the same time that cars are dropping off.

Their safety is jeopardized when cars begin pulling out and passing each other.

A. Bus Students

In the morning, the students are dropped off in the bus lane closest to the main entrance. In the afternoon, the buses line up in the bus lane around the front of the school.

B. Non-Bus Students

Parents dropping their student(s) off should use the center lane. Cars will not be permitted to drop off students in the bus lane. Parent(s)/Guardian(s) do not park your car or enter the bus zone during the arrival/dismissal process. This is a no parking zone and cars may be ticketed.

C. Other Modes of Transportation

A limited amount of bike racks is available at the middle school. Students who choose to ride their bicycles to school MUST bring their own lock and lock their bicycle to the rack. Bicycles are not permitted to be stored inside the school. Chichester Middle School is not responsible for theft or damages to bicycles/ bicycle parts while on school grounds. Skateboards, roller blades, hover boards, scooters and sneaker/shoes with wheels are not permitted on school property. These items will be confiscated and parents will be called to retrieve them. Transportation Bus transportation is a privilege. Failure to observe district rules may result in denial of transportation. Students must board and depart their bus at their assigned bus spots. Students may not ride a different bus or ride to a different destination unless an emergency situation exists and the student has obtained permission. Parents must write a note or email [email protected] with the student(s) name, bus change, parent/guardian contact information and reason. Students may not ride the high school or elementary school buses. Students must:

o Stay seated at all times

o Keep all body parts and objects inside the bus at all times

o Keep all food and drinks closed and away while on the bus

Page 7: Chichester Middle School 925 Meetinghouse Road Every

7

o Only bring permitted items/objects on the bus

o Keep hands to yourself

Additionally, the school code of conduct is in effect at all times on school buses. Students who do not abide by the rules may receive a bus suspension, detention, Saturday School or Out of School Suspension. Our School Board has adopted set standards that must be upheld on all district buses. This included buses used for school activities, such as but not limited to Field trips and athletic contents. Bus drivers have the responsibility for maintaining discipline on their buses. It is the responsibility of the students to act accordingly and to adhere to the Positive Behavior Expectations established for our middle school students. Inappropriate behavior at the bus stops or while traveling to or from school may result in disciplinary consequences. Early Dismissal If a student must leave the building during the school day, a note or email to [email protected] from a parent or guardian requesting an early dismissal should be presented to the main office prior to the early dismissal. The office staff will give the student a pass, which should be presented to the teacher whose class the student will be leaving. For each early dismissal, a parent or guardian must present picture identification to sign the student out in the main office. In an effort to maintain a safe dismissal for all students, please refrain from requesting an early dismissal after 2:30 PM. Early dismissals after 2:30 interfere with the preparation of our scheduled 3:00 PM dismissal for all students. Parents should never park in the bus lane after 2:30 PM. It is critical to student success and achievement that students come to school and remain here for the full day. Patterns of early dismissal may be reviewed by the administrative team. If a student leaves school before 11:30 AM and does not return, it will be considered an absence. A student needs to be present at school for at least a half-day to be considered present. Late Arrival Students should be seated and prepared for the day in their designated class, by the bell at 8:05 AM. If a student is late to school, they should report to the Attendance Desk for a late pass. A student who is late to school four times or more in a trimester will receive a consequence. Lateness to school can become a serious problem because it interferes with a student’s academic success and also disrupts the orderly routine of the school. Parking There are designated parking spots located at the front of the building for visitors and parents/guardians who are dropping off or picking up students during the school day. The lane closest to the building is a designated bus and fire lane. At no time should parents, guardians or visitors park and leave their car unattended in this lane.

Visitors All visitors coming into the building including parents, other district staff, outside service workers, delivery people, sales people, or anyone not registered as a middle school student, teacher or staff member must stop in the main office. The visitor will be issued a pass and must sign the registration sheet. Visitors MUST show ID. The main front door is the only entrance and exit to be used by visitors. Chichester schools use the Raptor Visitor Management System. This system allows the school to track everyone coming into the school by screening a form of identification.

Homework In addition to regular class work, outside assignments are essential ingredients for student achievement. Students' will be required to adhere to course policy regarding homework. Homework and projects are assigned by a teacher to: • promote good study habits • develop a sense of responsibility and independence • help a student master a new skill • enhance and stimulate a student’s creativity • ensure that a student understands the class material • inform parents of what is being taught in the classrooms In order to meet these objectives, homework must be considered important. Cooperation and communication between home and school are essential if homework assignments are to make a significant contribution to a student’s education. Please note that when a student returns from an excused absence, he/she is responsible to check with teachers for missed work. The homework policy for individual grades/classes will be available during back to school nights and/or by contacting your child's teacher or team leader. Communicate any homework concerns to your child’s teacher in a timely manner.

Grading Policy

Teachers calculate grades using a numerical system. The calculated grade is then translated into an alpha grade equivalent. The alpha grade is posted on the report card.

Numerical Grade Alpha Grade Equivalent

90% 100% (A+, A, A-)

80% 89% (B+, B, B-)

70% 79% (C+, C, C-)

60% 69% (D+, D, D-)

0% 59% F

*Students' final grade will be determined by the average of all three trimester grades.*

The middle school guidance department is charged with improving each student’s self-image. The primary function is to promote emotional maturity in each student and, in cooperation with the other professional staff, to promote the physical, intellectual and moral maturity of each student. Guidance Department

We coordinate a system of maintaining and interpreting student records for use by our students, their parents, and the school staff.

We will strive to consult and follow-up with each student, parent, school staff member, and

administrators regarding the program of testing and pupil self-appraisal.

We will make individual counseling available to students.

We will strive to coordinate orientation activities for students as they move to each new level of education. The same applies for transfer students.

We will maintain a system of referrals and follow-ups with agencies and resources available

outside the school which support the goals of the school guidance services.

Small group counseling may be provided to students based on area of need. Students who wish to go to the Guidance Office are encouraged to schedule an appointment. Illness/Injury-First Aid Students who become ill during the day require a pass from their teacher to report to the school nurse. In the event or injury that requires the student to be sent home, the nurse will contact the parent/guardian(s) to make arrangements for them or a designee to pick up the student. Students are not permitted to call home to be picked up because they do not feel well. Students must report to the nurse’s office for a dismissal due to illness. Injuries or illnesses that happen at home should be taken care of at home.

Medication Policy Medication that must be dispensed during school hours, whether it is prescribed or over-the-counter, must comply with the following procedures:

• The medication must be accompanied by a physician’s written request, which includes the stu-dent’s name, diagnosis, and medication dosage, how administered and time to be given. A new physician’s note is needed at the start of each school year.

• Medication must be in original labeled pharmacy container with the student’s name, name of medication, dosage and date. (Pharmacies, upon request, can provide a labeled “school” container.)

• A maximum of one month’s medication should be sent to school. Parent/guardian must provide the medication directly to the nurse/aide or to District personnel. Any change in dosage of medication must be confirmed to the school nurse by the physician and followed-up in writing.

• The physician’s written order may be faxed to the certified school nurse. Parents must notify the school nurse in writing of any change in the administration schedule of medications. Medi-cations will be administered as ordered on early dismissal days unless the parent notifies the school nurse in writing.

• Physician’s orders may be faxed to the certified school nurse at each building.

• Fax: 620-494-3064

Student Responsibilities Lockers Each student will be provided with a hall locker to store their belongings. Please note that all lockers are the property of Chichester School District. Students are not to share a locker. Students are to keep their assigned lockers closed and locked at all times. The school assumes no responsibility for locker contents. Locker combinations should be kept confidential. Therefore, anything stolen from these lockers is the responsibility of the student and not of the school. The Board reserves the right to authorize its employees to inspect the student's locker at any time for the purpose of determining whether the locker is being improperly used for the storage of contraband, a substance or object which is illegal, or any material that poses a hazard to the safety and good order of the schools. Personal Property The school and school district will not be responsible for lost or damaged personal articles. Students should lock all personal property during gym and after-school activities. Lost and Found It is strongly encouraged that students label their belongings and secure valuables in their assigned lockers. Students should check with their teachers when they have a lost item or check the bins located in the cafeteria. Unclaimed items will either be discarded or donated to charity as the conclusion of the school year.

Obligations Students must be responsible when using school/district issued items. This includes library books. Library books must be returned monthly. If a student owes a library book they will not be able to sign out another library book until it is paid for or the book is returned. If a student does not return the book or pay for it, they will be placed on privilege denial until the obligation is taken care of. Students are also held responsible for fundraising activities. If students agree to participate in a fundraising activity, they must follow all instructions and deadlines for the fundraising activity.

Page 13: Chichester Middle School 925 Meetinghouse Road Every

13

Parent Involvement Parent involvement in school matters is a key factor in ensuring student success. We strongly encourage involvement with the Home and School Association. For information, please call 610 485-6881ext. 2801. We are committed to increasing parent involvement and sharing resources between home, school, and community. You can access many of these resources online via the Chichester School District website, Parent Portal and on the District’s Facebook Page.

In order to chaperone your child on a field trip or to volunteer at any school activity or event, ALL PARENT(s)/GUARDIAN(s) must complete a volunteer clearance packet. Please check the District’s Web page to download a packet or pick up a packet in the Middle School Main Office. If you have already completed your volunteer packet at another district school provide a copy of your clearances to the Middle School.

Conferences Teachers welcome the opportunity to meet with students and parents/guardians to review student progress. Pupil-teacher conferences are arranged during a teachers' team planning time. Please email your child’s teacher or Team Leader if you need to arrange a conference at another time.

Parent-teacher conferences will be held twice a year. This is organized through www.timetosignup.com/chimiddle and more information will be given throughout the year.

Student Assistance Program (SAP) Students who are having problems at school because of home issues, relationship issues, depression or any other cause can receive help. The middle school has a student assistance program and an emotional support team in place. A student can be confidentially referred to the SAP (Student Assistance Program) team by a student, teachers, guidance counselors, administrators, and/or support staff.

The SAP team will gather school related information (attendance, discipline, nurses' reports, academic performance, and teacher feedback) about a student who requests help or a student who is referred by someone else. Once the appropriate data has been gathered, the SAP team will inform the student's guidance counselor, and if necessary, match the needs of the student with one of several agencies. School Calendar School district calendars are distributed directly to each family. Information related to school holidays and activities will be noted on this calendar. Please note that school closings and cancellations may impact specific events. Sports and Activities Eligibility Student-athletes and parents/guardians are required to sign a Code of Conduct prior to participate in any school sport and/or school activity. The board of School Directors of Chichester School District recognizes that education is our first priority. Students in grades 7 and 8 are eligible to participate in PIAA sports. Eligibility lists will be issued on bi-monthly basis. If a student is deemed ineligible, he/she will not be permitted to compete until the next eligibility report is compiled every 2 weeks on Friday. Eligibly for student participation has the following academic/ disciplinary concerns:

Page 14: Chichester Middle School 925 Meetinghouse Road Every

14

1. A student is permitted only one (1) failure in any of his/her classes 2. A student must maintain a grade point average of at least 2.00 (core and special areas).

A= 4.00 B= 3.00 C= 2.00 D= 1.00 F= 0.00 The grade point average shall be computed by dividing the total number of grade points for all subjects by the total number of subjects for which a grade point was received. Only subjects for which an A, B, C, D, or F are issued shall be included in determining the grade point average. All grades for all subjects and the grade point average shall be computed. Class Trips Class/Field trips are a privilege for our students. Teachers schedule field trips to provide our students with enriching experiences. If a student is suspended or on privilege denial, owes Saturday School Hours, or owes After School Detention Hours at the time of a field trip or, he/she will not be permitted to attend nor will a refund for any incurred costs be issued. **Students may also lose the privilege to attend a trip as a consequence for misbehavior after permission slips have been collected.**

School Rules and Regulations Rules, Regulations, policies and expectations are in place to promote a safe and positive learning environment. Effective discipline serves two purposes. First, it prevents the reoccurrence of a particular misbehavior in a student. Second, it is a learning experience for the student with the primary purpose of learning from mistakes and to make better decisions aligned with our expectations in the future. Many of our rules are developed in connection with society norms to prepare them to be contributing members of our community. Our goal is to ensure the development of our students and to provide them with the opportunity to succeed as they move through the grade levels and growth stages. For these objectives to be met in school, the student must learn basic disciplinary guidelines both at school and at home. Discipline must be considered important and necessary by the student, the parents, and the school staff. For our students to be successful students and contributing members of the Chichester Middle School, they should try to accomplish these positive goals:

• Report to school and to each class prepared and on time

• Make an honest effort to complete all assignments-in class and for homework

• Take time to study for tests, quizzes and to complete projects and assignments

• Be respectful of fellow students and work to resolve any problems or conflicts in a reasonable

and peaceful manner

• Be respectful of teachers and exhibit cooperation and good manners in class

• Demonstrate respect and care for school property and the property of others

• Be responsible for yourself and your belongings.

• Maintain a positive attitude that reflects a care for learning and a desire to be successful

Page 15: Chichester Middle School 925 Meetinghouse Road Every

15

Unacceptable forms of student behavior can be organized into four

categories:

Level I Acts of misbehavior usually resolved by the classroom teacher. If Level 1 behaviors are repeated, they will reach the administrative level. Level II Misbehaviors, which by their seriousness or frequency, require disciplinary action at the administrative level. Level III/ Level IV Offenses that are serious acts of misconduct that require administrative intervention. These behaviors include, but are not limited to, repeated misbehaviors and serious disruptions to the school environment that may threaten health, safety, and/or property but include other acts of serious misconduct. This includes misbehaviors which are illegal or criminal in nature. Our district’s School Resource Officer will be notified of Level III and Level IV student misbehaviors. Repeated violations of rules/school district policy can result in a referral to the superintendent for further disciplinary action.

Disciplinary Actions

Lunch Detention – Students are seated in a designated area (classroom, office, specific area in cafeteria, or other place) during their lunch period. Students are still provided a lunch of their choice. There will be no interaction with other students. Teacher After School Detention- Students stay with a specific teacher after school until 3:20 PM. Teacher will provide specific tasks for students to accomplish during this time. Administrative After School Detention- Students stay with an administrator until 4:00PM. Students are to work silently. Students are responsible for coordinating transportation. Saturday School Detention- Students arrive to CMS on Saturday and are assigned either 2 or 4 hours. 8:00 -10:00 AM or 8:00- 12:00PM. Students are responsible for coordinating transportation. Students are silent and working on either school work or an assignment from administration. In-Team Suspension - Students are assigned In-Team Suspension after multiple interventions have been attempted. In-Team Suspension places a student in one teacher’s class on their current team for the entire day. Students will work in the class the entire day, not switching classes. They will eat lunch with either the teacher or administration. In-School Suspension (ISS)- If a student is assigned in-school suspension, a guardian will be advised of the punishment by written referral or telephone. This is a more severe action that takes the student from the mainstream and places them with one teacher all day to complete assigned work from their regular team.

Disciplinary Actions(continued)

Out-of-School Suspension (OSS)- Exclusion from school may take the form of suspension or expulsion. Suspension is exclusion from school for a period of one (1) to ten (10) consecutive school days.

1. A suspension may require a parent, parents or guardian(s) to visit the school for a conference

with the appropriate school administrator for re-admittance consideration.

No student may receive a suspension unless the student has been informed of the reasons for the suspension and has been given the opportunity to respond before the suspension becomes effective. The maximum period a student may be suspended for an offense shall not exceed ten consecutive school days. A student suspended from school should receive school work / assignments to be completed at home. The appropriate school official will request the work from the appropriate teachers. The work will be ready for pick up by a parent or guardian 24 hours after the suspension was issued. A student serving a suspension may not attend or participate in any school activity or come on school property for any reason. Privilege Denial (PD)- Privilege Denial is assigned by administration as a consequence for certain offenses. While on Privilege Denial, students are not allowed to participate in school events either during or after school hours. Students can be put on Privilege Denial in addition to consequences listed above. Behavior Contract- Students that exhibit persistent behavior problems may be asked to sign a behavior contract. Parents/Guardians will be notified of the contract and asked to sign the contract as well. This intervention provides a specific plan for the student. Parents will be given a copy of the contract. Student Rights / Hearings Education is a fundamental right. Accordingly, students will be afforded all appropriate elements of due process if they are to be excluded from school. In a case involving an out-of-school suspension lasting more than three days, a student will be given an informal hearing. The purpose of the informal hearing is to enable the student to meet with the principal to explain the circumstances surrounding the event for which the student is being suspended or to show that there is some compelling reason why the student should return to school. The informal hearing also encourages the student’s parents or guardians to meet with the principal to discuss ways to ensure that future offenses can be avoided. Every effort will be made to ensure confidentiality between students and guidance counselors, school nurses, the school psychologist, other school employees or contracted employees of the district.
