NEWSLETTER
This Thanksgiving season, Pacelli students were provided with the opportunity to give back, and to really make a difference in the Austin community. For the month of November, students in grades PreK - 12 brought in non-perishable food items to help stock the Salvation Army Food Shelf. The annual food drive was a huge success. Students and their families were more than generous. We collected just over 40 storage boxes full of food. The 6th graders and members of the middle school and high school student council worked hard each day collecting the food. All of the donations were displayed at our Thanksgiving mass on Tuesday, November 20. Father Steffes blessed the food before it was picked up by the Salvation Army. The food drive helped to foster a sense of teamwork, because it created an opportunity for the students to work together toward a common, worthy cause. Students learned that they can be responsible for making great things happen. They developed a sense of pride as they were able to see that the food they collected would actually be helping others. Therefore, a sincere thank you is extended to the Pacelli community for their kindness and generosity.

Dear Pacelli Families and Friends,
During this Season of Advent, we prepare for and celebrate the coming of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Peace in our world today is a rather lofty goal. Recent news reports contain important and often stressful news. All of this comes during one of the busiest and most stressful times of the year for many of us. This Advent season is supposed to be filled with joy, wonder, peace, and excitement for Jesus’ coming on Christmas day. However, we often dilute those beautiful aspects of this season by getting caught up in the material aspects of the season.
I hope that you are able to set aside time to be filled with joy, wonder and peace as we celebrate the season with song.
Tuesday, December 11 - Preschool ConcertsMorning Preschool - 5:30 p.m.
Afternoon Preschool - 6:45 p.m.
Wednesday, December 12Grade 7-12 Choirs - 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, December 13Grade K-6 Classrooms - 6:30 p.m.
During this hectic and festive time of year, it is good to remember that God will take care of us, regardless of how great or small our worries are. Whether we are stressed about finals, family get togethers, Christmas cards, buying just the right gifts, or holiday travel, God is in control and will help us through it all.
The more we allow God to do in our lives, the more we will notice His works around us. If we can successfully give God our stresses throughout this Advent season, we will not only notice God’s handiwork more often, but will also be able to more thoroughly enjoy the peace of the season.
On behalf of the faculty and staff of Pacelli Catholic Schools, I wish your family a stress-free Advent, a wonderful Christmas, and the spirit of joy during this holiday season and in the New Year. May the anticipation and arrival of Christ in your lives fill you with the wonder of grace of this holy time of year. Marantha: Come Lord Jesus, Come!
In closing, count your blessings, hug your loved ones often, be kind to your neighbors, and know that Jesus loves you and so do I!
Yours in Christ,
Mrs. Jean McDermott Principal [email protected]

Dear Pacelli Families,
When I was little, I played “school” with my brother and sister in our basement. They sat in desks, I gave them math facts worksheets to do, and I would correct their papers with a red pen. Like a judge to his gavel, I believed the most important teacher tool was the red pen.
Years later, when I first began teaching, I quickly discovered how much I disliked a teacher’s red pen. I wanted my students to succeed and learn, and the more I used the red pen, the less successful students felt. I tried using purple or green, but that didn’t seem to matter much. I realized it wasn’t the pen, it was that my students saw the marks as a defining failure. So many students will not take risks for fear of being wrong. When they get things wrong, they determine they are dumb or terrible at that subject. I needed to create a mindset in my students that red marks on their paper were not failures, but opportunities to learn and grow.
Many of you have jobs in which you work with other people. Aren’t the best coworkers or employees the kind that are self starters, who take the initiative to solve problems and get the job done? These people do not give up when the first approach does not work. These people understand that failure is not an end. Failure is an essential part of growth and success.
As a parent, seeing our children struggle is one of the hardest things. We want to “fix” the situation for them, make things easier on them. But, in doing that, we rob them of critical problem solving skills they need to be successful adults. When we test our children on their math facts, we must create a pile of flash cards that they got wrong, so they can practice and learn. And, when our children say things like, “I’m so stupid in math,” or “I got so many wrong,” we need to tell them that the pile of cards they don’t have mastered yet doesn’t define them. What defines their learning is each card that gets removed from that pile from practice.
We also need to be able to share with our children when things are hard for us. We need to tell them when we mess up and show them how we process and learn from our mistakes.
Struggles and disappointments are part of life. When our children grow up, they may be burdened with financial struggles, health problems, broken hearts, and loss. Many of these struggles cannot be fixed by us and are beyond their control. If we want our children to have the strength to persevere through all life will throw at them, they must practice struggle and disappointment now, and develop the skills needed to not give up.
A friend sent me a story of a little boy who was given a glow stick out of the package. He was content playing with the glow stick the way it was, but then his older brother came and broke the glow stick, snapping it right in the middle. At first, the little boy cried to his mother that the stick was broken. The mother scolded the older brother for breaking the glow stick. He then showed his mother and little brother the glow stick, which now was glowing brilliantly. He said, “I had to break it to make it glow!” Let us teach our children that their struggles will help them glow!
“We are persecuted, but God does not leave us. We are hurt sometimes, but we are not destroyed.”

Nature Center Field Trip By Ms. Laura Tomlin
On our 3rd grade field trip to the Nature Center last month, we learned that habitats need food, water, shelter, and space to survive. We also learned about cardinal directions of North, South, East and West. Using directions, we walked around the outside area to find different types of habitats at the Hormel Nature Center.

The Season of Giving is Upon Us written by Mrs. Christine Frederick and Mrs. Kathy Neve
Pacelli Catholic Schools First and Second Graders begin celebrating the season of giving by completing several service projects to spread joy to those around us.
As the weather turns colder, we are once again reminded of those who may be less fortunate than others. The first and second grade students will begin the season by collecting winter hats, mittens and socks for our “Warm Heads, Hands, and Feet; Given by Warm Hearts” Christmas tree project. Kicking off our project on Monday, November 26th students will be accepting donations to be placed on our special tree which will be located near the Pacelli Catholic Schools office. New and/or gently used mittens, hats, socks, and other warm outerwear accessories will be greatly appreciated. All of the donations received will go to local families in need of winter gear.
In addition to the mitten tree project, first and second graders will share some Christmas joy at The Cedars of Austin and Sacred Heart Care Center. The students will sing a variety of holiday songs. Following the concert, they will be distributing handmade Christmas cards and visit with residents.
Within our Religion curriculum we learn about and discuss the Corporal Works of Mercy. The Corporal Works of Mercy are kind acts by which we help our neighbors with their material and physical needs. This is the perfect time of year to share these kind acts.
As the season of Advent approaches, we remember and reflect on Mary and Joseph preparing for the birth of their son and our Savior, Jesus. We also remember how they traveled so far on Christmas Eve with so little. In preparation for the celebration of Jesus’s birth, we are asked to give, with warm hearts and open hands, to others as Jesus taught us!

TeamUp written by Ms. Laura Sheedy
Pacelli student athletes, Abbey Neve, William Kahle, Vanessa Cotter, Jayden Lewis, Sam Nelsen, and Sam King, had the opportunity to attend a TeamUp Conference with other student athletes from our Conference. On the drive to Rochester that morning students were asking, “What will be doing?” “Who is all going?” the usual questions that we ask ourselves before something new.
New experiences can be scary, even for students who realize they will know six other people who will be with them all day. However, the jitters were gone by the end of the first half hour. Under the guidance of speaker and author Craig Hillier, their nerves vanished.
When my administration asked me if I would like to take students to this conference, I jumped at the chance when I learned who was speaking. According to his website, Craig Hillier has a passion to work with students, educators, and professionals. He has spoken to over two million people since 1990. His high-energy programs and contagious enthusiasm captivate audiences throughout the United States. Participants find themselves engaged in a story and then suddenly they are on their feet with an activity that drives the point even further. His programs are known to be up-beat, fun and educational.
Mr. Hillier has the skills and techniques to reach high schoolers by drawing them into his stories and positive antics. He then spoke to them about being positive role models and making positive choices, in a way that students listen to and think about for their future. Hillier spoke about leadership, how to approach situations as part of a team, how to look at things from different perspectives; all ideas and skills that are helpful for high school students.
At the end of the day students took a survey to determine their personality type. They were placed into groups based on their answers. The four groups were called; Togetherness, Enterpriser, Analyzer and The Motivator. Sitting in our groups, we discussed what kinds of skills each individual brings to working as a team; the strengths and how they learn best, as well as the negative characteristics each “type” might bring to a team. It was interesting to see the student athletes think about what skills they bring to teams that they may be a part of, or how the negative aspects can be turned into advantages. They learned how they can make any team, whether it is a sports team or not, a better functioning team.
The ride home was much different than the drive over. It was a time of reflection and thinking. While they didn’t ask a lot of questions during the workshop, based on conversations since, they paid close attention to what was being said about teamwork.
