I think it is perhaps significant that Cardell never published anything until just after Gardner died in 1964, perhaps so that he could not be sued for libel. The significance of the publication of "Witch" in 1964 is that it was, as far as I know, the first time that the Book of Shadows had appeared in print. Whilst the publication of "Witch" was not done with any goodwill to the Craft (very much the opposite), it does provide those of us who are researching the history of the various versions of the Book of Shadows with an indication as to what it was like in the late 1950s. Blessed Be! Philip

Rex Nemorensis [Re: Earth Religion News]

Just a bit of background that might be helpful. The Earth Religion News article is a shortened version of a booklet, entitled "Witch",

which was published in 1964, shortly after Gerald Gardner's death.

The author was one Charles Cardell who, for reasons best known to himself, wanted to discredit Gardner.

He persuaded one of his acquaintances (known by the pseudonym

of "Olive Green", to whom Gardner gave the magical name of Florannis) to infiltrate the Bricket Wood coven to steal their secrets.

The coven became wise to this and did not allow her in. However,

Gardner, being rather attracted to young ladies, was persuaded to initiate her.

The copy of the Book of Shadows published in "Witch" in 1964 was

the version that Gardner was using at the time "Olive Green" was initiated, which was probably about 1958 or 1959.

It is said that the biography "Gerald Gardner Witch" was published to

counteract some of what Cardell was saying about Gardner. I think it is perhaps significant that Cardell never published anything until

just after Gardner died in 1964, perhaps so that he could not be

sued for libel. The significance of the publication of "Witch" in 1964 is that it was,

as far as I know, the first time that the Book of Shadows had

appeared in print. Whilst the publication of "Witch" was not done with any goodwill to

the Craft (very much the opposite), it does provide those of us who

are researching the history of the various versions of the Book of Shadows with an indication as to what it was like in the late 1950s.

Blessed Be!

Philip
